Shelly clutched her phone firmly, uncertain about her response. Was Nox skipping his wedding? Why was he reneging on his promise and yelling her name once more?
She remained clueless on how to reply to Jeanne.
“Let me share another detail.” Jeanne stated directly, “Are you aware why Benjamin suddenly got that study abroad invitation?”
Shelly froze in shock. The idea had never occurred to her until Jeanne mentioned it, sparking an immediate epiphany.
“Exactly, Nox arranged it. To claim you for himself, he aimed to send Benjamin away from the country using all sorts of shady tactics. Actually, I was the one who spoke with Benjamin and persuaded him to leave,” Jeanne revealed straightforwardly.
Shelly bit down on her lip, torn between fury and confusion! Back then, she truly adored Benjamin. Had he stayed in Harken, they could have ended up together.
“Want to hear how I persuaded him? I didn’t resort to threats.” Jeanne clarified her position.
Jeanne continued, “A letter from Nox meant for you convinced Benjamin that Nox genuinely loves you. You never saw it since I didn’t instruct Nox to deliver it. I figured you’d be irritated by his words because you disliked him. Still, I believe it’s time you read it.”
Shelly stayed quiet.
“Before sending the letter, one more thing. Did Benjamin mention his parents approving your relationship?”
“Yes,” Shelly answered.
“Nox is the one who swayed Benjamin’s parents.” Jeanne explained, “Those nine days he vanished weren’t just for proposal prep. He also set up every contingency for you, like convincing Benjamin’s parents and even trying to pair you two up. No clue how he pulled it off, but he managed.”
Shelly had never imagined Nox going to such lengths for her. She always saw him as that ruthless villain full of wicked deeds. Now, though, he seemed more grown-up and less immature.
“Hard to put into words just how deeply Nox loves you. He’s losing his mind screaming your name right now, yet he holds back from seeking you out, terrified of causing you pain.” Jeanne wrapped up there. “I’ll email you the letter’s digital copy. Then decide if you’ll come see Nox.”
With that, Jeanne ended the call. Having laid it all out for Shelly, her job was complete.
Soon, a file popped up on Shelly’s phone. She stared at it, delaying the open for ages. Fear gripped her for reasons unknown, making her hesitate.
Finally, she clicked it open. Reading Nox’s heartfelt words, tears welled in her eyes. How could Nox adore her so intensely without her ever sensing it?
Shelly brushed away her tears and let out a bitter laugh. Unsure if it mocked herself or Nox, she set her phone aside, collapsed onto the bed in silence, and drifted off to sleep. Courage to face Nox still eluded her.
Meanwhile, in the nightclub, a wasted Nox sprawled on the sofa, murmuring “Shelly” endlessly, as Jeanne, Edward, Monica, and Finn observed from nearby.
Yet he lay completely still.
Monica couldn’t resist asking Jeanne, “Did you make the call?”
“I did.”
“What was Shelly’s response?”
“Nothing.”
“An hour’s passed already.” Monica grew restless.
“Indeed.” Jeanne nodded.
It signaled Shelly wasn’t showing up.
“Does Shelly truly feel nothing for Nox?” Monica fumed, baffled why Shelly remained unmoved by Nox’s sacrifices.
Jeanne had no answer for that.
Monica pressed on, “You mentioned Shelly’s not with Benjamin. Did you verify with Benjamin?” “No need. Shelly turned Benjamin down.”
“Rejecting Benjamin shows she doesn’t love him. So why not embrace Nox?”
“Dumping Benjamin doesn’t equal choosing Nox. Plus, Shelly prefers staying single. Her refusal of Nox while unattached proves she holds no affection for him.” Jeanne gazed at Nox and declared, “No chance left.”
