~5 minute read · 1,189 words

“Isn’t this my usual way to get rid of you? You don’t have to feel like you’re taking advantage of me. I’ve always been generous to women,” Nox stated directly.

The iciness in his voice made Shelly feel like she meant nothing to Nox—not even the woman he had once proposed marriage to.

“You’ve stayed with me longer than anyone else, so I’m offering you more. Take it. It could prove useful down the line,” Nox remarked coolly.

Shelly understood she had overestimated her place in his life. Nox was simply paying her off, just as he did with other women. No deeper significance lay behind the gesture.

“Alright,” Shelly agreed.

With Nox putting it that way, she decided to accept.

“Then sign the papers and pass them to Mr. Logan,” Nox instructed without emotion.

“Sure.”

“I’ll hang up now.”

“Nox,” Shelly called out abruptly.

“Hmm?” Nox gripped his phone harder, though his tone stayed frigid.

“Did the blind date go well?”

“It went great. We’re meeting each other’s parents tomorrow and tying the knot in a week,” Nox replied plainly.

A sharp pang stabbed Shelly’s heart. Yet it wasn’t unbearable, as though she’d endured it previously.

She said, “Congratulations.” “Thank you.”

“I’ll leave it at that. Goodbye.”

“Goodbye.”

Once the call disconnected, Shelly gazed at the view from the balcony, her sight growing hazy. A smile crossed her lips as she reflected: wasn’t this precisely the conclusion she had desired most?

Drawing in a deep breath, she headed back to the living room and began dining with Bella. From this point forward, she and Nox were completely severed. Still, days spent with Bella felt quite fulfilling too.

Two days passed, and Nox’s wedding announcement exploded across every major news platform.

Who could have imagined Nox tying the knot once more? It felt like only yesterday that his previous wedding had turned into that strange fiasco, and here he was, heading to the altar again.

Above all, the bride’s background remained shrouded in mystery this time. Shelly learned the Winters had shielded her identity meticulously to shield her from media intrusion.

Regardless, Nox, the nation’s top bachelor, was finally off the market, and Shelly observed the reports with composure. Clearly, Nox had been serious about marrying within a week.

She viewed it briefly before setting her phone aside, only for it to ring. That’s when Shelly recalled she hadn’t called Benjamin back over the last couple of days. It wasn’t deliberate; she’d simply overlooked it. She answered. “Ben.” “Shelly, Nox is getting married.”

“I saw the news.”

“I didn’t expect him to wed so quickly.”

Shelly hadn’t anticipated it either. Yet Nox had forever been capricious. Plus, he’d shown a ruthless streak since childhood. For him, romances flared up and faded just as swiftly. “Shelly, about what we discussed that day…” Benjamin hesitated.

He sought her response.

She said, “I’m sorry, Ben. I believe we’ve lost our opportunity to be together.”

Benjamin clenched his phone tighter.

“I always believed I still held feelings for you, that you might be the sole person I’d ever love. But while pondering if we should reunite, I realized I no longer wished to. When a romance ends, it stays ended. To me now, we’re merely friends.” Shelly shared her honest reflections.

Benjamin stayed quiet.

“It appears relationships can’t endure such trials.” Shelly let out a light laugh. “Ben, thank you for caring for me and letting me experience being cherished. I treasure our past bond, but moving forward… I’m sorry.”

“It’s alright,” Benjamin replied, a hint of strain in his voice. “You can’t force love.”

“You’re a good man. You’ll find someone even better.”

“Yes,” Benjamin answered, his tone turning emotional.

He’d long assumed that after parting with Nox, Shelly would choose him. Without barriers, she’d come back to him. He figured her affections lingered, mirroring his own. Regrettably, Shelly viewed their connection as history.

After a prolonged pause to compose himself, he inquired, “Shelly, do you like Nox?”

“No,” Shelly refuted decisively.

“I heard the surest way to move on from someone is to love another.” Benjamin murmured softly, “Meaning, you’ve given your heart to someone new, erasing love for the one from before.”

Shelly’s heart jolted. Such an idea had never occurred to her.

“Actually, Nox…” Benjamin trailed off. “I just hope you find happiness.”

“I want the same for you,” Shelly replied earnestly.

“I’ll hang up now.”

“Alright.” “Goodbye, Shelly.”

“Goodbye, Benjamin.”

Once the call ended, Shelly gazed blankly at her phone. Over just a few days, two men had vanished from her existence.

Ultimately, her routine would slide back into its typical monotony, reminiscent of the past when it was solely her and Bella. Truth be told, with just Bella accompanying her, her life had been rather satisfying.

Midnight struck on the eve of Nox’s wedding, and Shelly’s phone suddenly rang. She never bothered silencing it since her circle of friends was tiny and calls were rare. The unexpected ring thus startled her slightly. Glancing at the unfamiliar number, she answered. “Hello.”

“Shelly, it’s me, Candice—but also Jeanne,” Jeanne declared straightforwardly.

Shelly pressed her lips tight. She’d overheard Monica slip and say Jeannie a few times, giving her a vague idea. Yet, certain secrets stayed hidden from the world, so she feigned ignorance. Jeanne’s direct confession caught her off guard. “I’ve told you honestly who I am just so you can trust me.”

“I trust you,” Shelly replied swiftly.

“Then let me fill you in on Nox. I don’t wish to complicate things for you or weigh you down further. If you were still with Benjamin, I wouldn’t have reached out. But since you’re not, some things need saying.”

“Please go ahead.” Shelly responded humbly.

Strangely, she couldn’t bring herself to refuse Jeanne, whether due to her true identity or the warmth she was extending now.

“Nox, that fool, is totally wasted right now.” Jeanne opened by blasting Nox.

Shelly stood frozen in surprise.

“He’s so pissed drunk we can’t haul him out of the nightclub,” Jeanne vented in frustration.

Shelly failed to see why Jeanne shared this detail with her.

“You know Nox’s wedding is tomorrow, right?” Jeanne cut to the chase.

“Yes,” Shelly confirmed.

“Yet this guy abruptly backs out, claiming he won’t marry after all. He’s ordered Edward to fly him overseas tonight.” Shelly marveled at Nox’s childish antics, left utterly speechless.

“He insists he wants to remain single forever.” “Nox likely spouted that while drunk. He’ll be over it by morning.”

“You think Nox will snap out of it?” Jeanne probed.

“He never holds to his words. His mind will shift tomorrow.”

“Well, he’s yelling your name at this moment. Do we just leave him alone and check if he sobers up tomorrow?”

Jeanne asked Shelly.
