Picked Up A Husband For Farming Chapter 1 - Transmigrating to the Scene of Hard Labor
“Huh?”
“What’s going on?!”
Xu Qing felt a wave of confusion, and a desperate shriek echoed. The intense pain in her lower abdomen brought tears to her eyes. Glancing around, she saw a rundown shack with fractured windows. Two frail newborns lay beside her. Xu Qing was utterly astonished; she was in the process of giving birth!
Yet, Xu Qing distinctly recalled strolling by the river before she lost consciousness. A misstep led to a sprained ankle and an unfortunate plunge into the water.
In the fleeting moments before she drowned, Xu Qing hadn't the time for any profound thoughts. Her final coherent sensation was the sheer embarrassment of her death!
Now, Xu Qing uncovered a truth that plunged her into deeper despair: she had transmigrated. The original occupant of this body had given birth to two children, only to succumb to exhaustion!
This was a rudimentary, underdeveloped village. The Host was a mere eighteen years old and had become pregnant before marriage. She was slated to be cast into the river and drowned, but her mother's tearful pleas saved her. The villagers, incensed by the shame she brought upon their community, banished her to a humble straw hut at the base of the mountain, outside the village bounds.
A peculiar sensation emanated from her belly once more, startling Xu Qing. The Host had been carrying triplets!
Before her transmigration, Xu Qing had been a renowned physician. She understood with chilling clarity that if the final child wasn't delivered swiftly, she would inevitably face death once more!
“Do you require assistance?” A voice, tinged with curiosity, suddenly broke the silence from outside the dilapidated hut. An elder, clad in flowing white robes, entered.
“G-great… help me… press on my stomach…” Xu Qing, convinced her demise was imminent, was taken aback by this unexpected turn.
“Press your stomach? How is that possible? That’s not how childbirth works,” the old man stated, his brow furrowed.
Xu Qing, reeling and disoriented, failed to grasp the primitive level of the world she had transmigrated into. “Are you a physician? Hurry, do as I say! This infant… is not positioned correctly and requires repositioning for a safe delivery…”
The old man repeatedly shook his head. “This child cannot be saved.”
Moments before, the midwife who had assisted Xu Qing’s delivery, assuming her dead, had scurried back to the village to spread the news. She had chanced upon this traveling doctor, who then hurried to the scene.
He had presumed the mother deceased and the twins in need of care. He hadn't anticipated Xu Qing's survival and her intention to deliver the third child. In his estimation, however, that infant was beyond saving. He hastily unlathed his medicine chest, retrieving the precious ginseng tablets from its depths, and pressed them into Xu Qing’s mouth.
Ginseng, a highly valued Traditional Chinese Medicine, even possessed the power to revive the near-dead. As the essence of ginseng touched her tongue, Xu Qing felt a surge of renewed vitality.
“This child can be saved… heed my instructions… please?” Xu Qing finally regained her bearings. Recognizing the divergence from her previous world, she resolved to try her utmost to explain.
The old man pondered for a moment, then nodded resolutely. “I have never attempted a delivery in such a manner. Whether the child survives or perishes is a matter of fate!”
He had witnessed fatalities under his care before, but this instance filled him with an unfamiliar tension. Yet, it also presented a novel challenge, a unique case study for any physician eager to expand their knowledge and save more lives.
Xu Qing indicated a specific area on her abdomen. “Apply firm pressure here… then pull in this direction… two counts, and cease…”
Given the direness of the situation, nothing could truly be worse, so the old man raised his hand and complied.
“Ah!” Xu Qing cried out, the intensity of the pain overwhelming. Her lips were already bleeding, and sweat streamed relentlessly down her forehead. She felt a persistent hemorrhage, fearing she might bleed to death.
Fortunately, the elder possessed considerable skill. He expertly pressed several vital acupoints on her body, effectively stemming the flow of blood.
At last, just as Xu Qing’s consciousness began to fade, the fetus was successfully maneuvered into the correct position. With a final, monumental effort, she delivered the child!
The old man’s hands trembled as he cradled the blood-covered infant, shaking his head. “It is truly born. A daughter. Alas…”
Just as Xu Qing felt a wave of relief wash over her, she noticed the infant was unnervingly silent. Had it suffocated? How could the child she had just brought into the world be dead?
“Quickly… pat her back… she’s still not breathing… blow… blow… blow into her mouth…” Xu Qing’s breathing was shallow and ragged. The severe blood loss and agony weighed heavily on her eyelids, but her will to live asserted itself – she could not succumb yet; there was still work to be done.
The old man regarded the young village woman with astonishment, impressed by her composure in the face of such peril. However, he feared the child was indeed gone, and his efforts would prove futile.
Even though he was entirely sure the child couldn't be saved, he complied with Xu Qing's request. Alas, the child remained lifeless. He let out a sigh. "Sigh... As I already stated, even if this child were born, it wouldn't survive. It has been within you for an excessive duration..."
