Chen Yang and Niu Ming exchanged a glance and followed along.
"Hey? How come you two are here? Did you manage to gather the medical fees we discussed last time?"
As they entered the shop, they saw a middle-aged man with a goatee, whose sneaky appearance made him look quite untrustworthy, smiling as he came out from a room inside the shop.
"Doctor Li, we’ve almost gathered enough for the medical fees. We came by this time just to give it to you." The elder spoke to the middle-aged man with utmost respect.
He then took out a wad of crumpled cash from his pocket.
Most of it was in small denominations, enough to show how hard the elderly couple had scrimped and saved for this money.
But the middle-aged man seemed to think nothing of it. Seeing the elder pull out the money, his eyes immediately sparkled with greed, and the smile on his face grew even wider.
"Heh heh, that’s good enough. As long as the medical fees are covered, I can cure your granddaughter’s illness in no time. Don’t worry." Doctor Li said, smiling as he grabbed the money from the elderly man’s hand, then casually licked his fingers before counting it in front of the elder without any pretense.
His cunning demeanor was more reminiscent of a swindler than a doctor.
Seeing this, Chen Yang had a feeling that the elderly were being duped, but since he hadn’t yet seen the elder’s granddaughter’s actual condition, he didn’t say anything.
"Ah, well, as long as she can be cured, that’s good."
The elder watched as the money they had painstakingly collected was taken away. His face showed a bit of heartache, but when he heard that the granddaughter would be cured soon, the dismay quickly vanished, replaced by happiness.
"By the way, Doctor Li, I also came this time to see Xiao Shan." The elderly man spoke again.
Hmm?
Upon hearing this, Doctor Li paused briefly in his actions, looked up, and said, "Didn’t I tell you? Your granddaughter’s illness is very complicated and she cannot be disturbed. It requires careful treatment. Why do you want to see her again?"
"But it’s been more than half a month since I’ve seen Xiao Shan. It’s been tough for me to come here, please let me see her. I promise not to disturb her." The elderly man grew anxious when it seemed that Doctor Li wouldn’t allow it.
"Alright, alright. Go in and take a look. But remember, don’t make any noise. It won’t be good for the treatment." Doctor Li replied impatiently and went back to counting money.
"Okay, good."
The elderly man nodded with a smile and walked inside.
Seeing this, Chen Yang, Niu Ming, and Qi Zhengwei also followed.
But no one expected that as Doctor Li was counting money, he suddenly looked up and blocked their path.
"Hold on, who are you people? What do you want to do inside?" Doctor Li scanned them with eyes full of caution.
"We’re relatives too, just going in to take a look." Niu Ming replied.
"You’re relatives too?" Doctor Li showed a suspicious look, clearly not believing Niu Ming.
Noticing that Chen Yang and the others were stopped, the elder returned and explained with a smile, "Yes, Doctor Li, they are with me. We’re going in together to see Xiao Shan."
"No, absolutely not. I already said, your granddaughter needs undisturbed rest. Too many people will cause a disturbance." Doctor Li’s attitude turned bad again, dismissing the elder loudly.
The elder, feeling weak, didn’t dare to rebut and found himself at a loss for words.
At this moment, Chen Yang furrowed his brows.
Because he sensed there was something very wrong with Doctor Li.
First, this rundown place didn’t look like a hospital at all.
Second, his reactions were too strange, not just un-doctor-like, but as if he was intentionally preventing them from seeing the patient.
Chen Yang, being a doctor, knew there were certain situations where patients shouldn’t see outsiders or be disturbed.
But Doctor Li’s reaction seemed too deliberate, too resolute.
It didn’t seem like he was considering the patient, but more like he was hiding something deliberately.
"You’re making it sound too serious. We’re just going in quietly without disturbing the patient. It’s not that serious." Chen Yang said.
"You think it’s not serious? Do you understand the condition? Which of us is the doctor here?" Doctor Li exclaimed loudly.
Chen Yang was now almost certain that this guy in front of him was likely a fraud, so he no longer held back, saying directly, "As it happens, I’m a doctor too."
"And I do know a bit about the girl’s condition."
"You’re a doctor?" Doctor Li was visibly flustered upon hearing Chen Yang say that he was also a doctor.
He then suddenly turned to the elder, angrily saying, "Oh, so this is how you repay my kindness in treating your granddaughter? I charge you so little, and you don’t trust me, bringing in another doctor?"
"Fine, since that’s the case, go in, and take your granddaughter home. I won’t treat her anymore."
Hearing this, the elder became panic-stricken.
They couldn’t afford a major hospital.
They saw Doctor Li as a lifeline, and upon seeing him angered and refusing treatment, they naturally became frantic, quickly explaining, "Doctor Li, you misunderstood, we don’t mistrust you. Doctor Chen just wants to help Xiao Shan, nothing more."
"Hmph." Seeing that his tactic worked, Doctor Li snorted coldly, "If you trust me, you should heed my words and stop disturbing your granddaughter’s rest."
"Otherwise, if something happens, I won’t take responsibility. Don’t blame me then."
Doctor Li firmly declared this, and the elderly, who understood nothing, were genuinely intimidated by him.
But Chen Yang wasn’t buying any of it.
What illness could possibly be worsened by merely glancing at the patient? There was clearly something fishy here.
"You’re blocking us like this - don’t you have something to hide?" Chen Yang retorted bluntly to Doctor Li.
Doctor Li, who was overbearing in front of the elderly, was flustered and stammered nervously before Chen Yang.
"You, what are you saying? I’m a professional doctor; I wouldn’t gamble with a patient’s life!" Doctor Li tried to maintain his composure.
"Ha." Seeing him grow more nervous, Chen Yang knew his guess was likely right.
"If you’re not hiding anything, why are you afraid of us seeing the patient?" Chen Yang pressed on.
At this point, Qi Zhengwei and Niu Ming also noticed something amiss, chiming in, "Yeah, just a quick look, what are you so worried about?"
"I’ve been dealing with herbs for over twenty years, practically half a doctor, and I’ve never heard of simply looking at a patient worsening the condition." Qi Zhengwei added.
"What do you know? The patient’s condition is special and can’t be disturbed. If something goes wrong, who will take responsibility? You can’t go inside!" Doctor Li’s stance was firm.
Unexpectedly, Chen Yang replied, "If our presence really causes problems, we’ll take responsibility!"
"Yeah, we’ll take responsibility. If needed, we’ll cover sending her to a major hospital!" Niu Ming backed him up, signaling they were willing to take responsibility!
This left Doctor Li a bit baffled.
He hadn’t expected to be cornered like this!
He certainly couldn’t let them inside; with someone knowledgeable about medicine, his ruse might be exposed.
Doctor Li was getting flustered, his mind racing for a solution.
But before he could come up with anything, Chen Yang had already pushed aside his arm and headed inside.
"Hey! What are you doing! You can’t go in there!" Doctor Li exclaimed, shocked, and hurried after them to stop them.
But how could he manage to stop Chen Yang?
"Step aside! We’ll take responsibility if something goes wrong." Chen Yang gave a slight push, and Doctor Li stumbled back several steps, nearly falling.
Backed against the wall, he could no longer stand in Chen Yang’s way.
Chen Yang approached the door and pushed it open.
He was confronted with the sight of a young girl lying in bed, her breathing rapid and shallow, on the brink of death.
With just one glance, Chen Yang could see that the girl’s life was in critical danger!
