“Save me—”

Pit of two meters deep. An Jing sat inside, gazing upward, continuing to cry for someone to hear and pull her out.

Despite her repeated calls, no one appeared to offer a rescue.

Her throat grew parched, so An Jing decided it was best to take a short break before yelling again.

Looking down at the coarse, ancient fabric of her clothes, An Jing felt a mix of emotions. She was grateful for a new lease on life, yet lamenting her rebirth into a land unknown to historical records brought a sigh to her lips.

Indeed, An Jing had passed away.

Her demise occurred during a mission.

As a citizen of the 21st century who perished for her country, regret was absent, but the notion of her soul transferring into an ancient woman’s body was entirely unforeseen.

This woman of old bore the name Lin Anjing, a name strikingly similar to her original, differing by just one character.

An Jing found solace in the fact that she had not only been reborn into Lin Anjing’s form but also inherited her memories, sparing her from utter confusion about her current plight.

Contemplating Lin Anjing’s difficult circumstances, An Jing could only release another profound sigh, “Alas…”

Lin Anjing hailed from an impoverished farming family in Xiyun Kingdom’s Jiuping Village. At eighteen, she remained unwed.

It wasn’t for lack of desire to marry; rather, no suitor would have her.

Lin Anjing had been betrothed once, but the prospective family discovered she had never menstruated. Deeming her a ‘Stone Woman’ – barren and incapable of bearing children, a dire deficiency in antiquity – they had severed the engagement when Lin Anjing was merely fifteen.

Furthermore, this broken betrothal became public knowledge, cementing Lin Anjing’s reputation as a ‘Stone Woman’ and ensuring no one would propose. Consequently, Lin Anjing became an aging spinster.

As a ‘Stone Woman,’ Lin Anjing endured three years of relentless mockery from the villagers.

Constant ridicule left the sensitive and timid Lin Anjing unable to meet anyone’s gaze, fostering increasing isolation. Eventually, she would avert her head whenever venturing out for work.

Lin Anjing’s own family already harbored little affection for her, and her status as a childless ‘Stone Woman’ only deepened their disdain. They burdened her with all the menial, strenuous tasks, frequently resorting to beatings and harsh words.

Her parents were alive, and an elder brother was the favored child. Lin Anjing, conversely, was treated as chattel, her existence more wretched than that of any beast.

“Alas,” An Jing sighed once more, “such gender bias is truly deplorable.”

Earlier that very day, Lin Anjing had been dispatched by her mother to the mountains for firewood, only to stumble into a hunter’s cleverly concealed pitfall.

This trap, a pit over two meters deep, was designed for capturing wild game. Having fallen in, Lin Anjing apparently struck her head and met her end instantly.

When consciousness returned, the body remained the same, but the soul within was transformed – it was now An Jing.

“This turn of events truly favors me,” An Jing observed her new physique with satisfaction. Though gaunt as a reed, it possessed remarkable resilience, likely a consequence of the arduous labor from her ceaseless chores.

“Lin Anjing, please rest assured, I will honor your body,” An Jing vowed solemnly to the empty air.

After all, she had no attachments binding her to the modern world.

Perhaps the experience of dying instilled in her a profound appreciation for life, igniting a desire to truly live this time around.

Drawing a deep breath, An Jing looked upward once more and bellowed with all her might, “Somebody save me—”
