Mr. London and Mrs. Manhattan discuss a new weapon that can kill powerful summoners, while also revealing an alliance with the Sun Elves and plans to place a Primordial in the Directorate. Their conversation is interrupted by news that Arthur Pentagon has publicly declared Staten Island a haven for Humanoid Summoners. Mr. London decides to cripple Staten Island by cutting its imports and encouraging Humanoid Summoners to flood the city, believing they will cause its collapse. Meanwhile, in another realm, generals Abaddon and Apollyon report to the Unknown King that a city supporting their cause is under demon attack. The King orders the Sovereign-tier gate closed but then decides to personally intervene, leaving the generals behind.

"I did not expect a plague of demon dungeons after making that announcement. We've already lost people, Arthur."

The mayor sat behind his desk, with Arthur seated on the other side.

"We've deployed security forces from both Staten and Pendragon Island to deal with them," Arthur replied. "We knew there would be opposition to this decision."

"I know, but I didn't expect demons. That makes this even worse." The mayor sighed heavily before looking at Arthur with a trace of hope in his eyes. "Do you think he'll come?"

Arthur leaned back in his chair. "I don't know. All I know is that we've joined him in this fight. If things get too bad, I'll offer my aid."

The mayor loosened his necktie. "You can't do that. You're too large in your dragon form, and there's a 50.5 Sovereign-tier gate out there. We don't have a Sovereign."

He paused.

"We need Godfrey."

Arthur's phone buzzed at the same moment as the mayor's.

They glanced at each other before checking their screens.

A video was already spreading of Golden Order knights marching through a golden gate, their imposing silhouettes dark against the brilliant golden fog pouring from its edges.

The gauge on the recording began identifying their tiers.

Most ranged between 12.4 and 12.9. King tiers.

But the two knights leading them were different. Arthur's attention fixed on the readings above their heads.

46.1. That number belonged to the taller of the two. Beside him marched another knight whose armour carried noticeably feminine contours.

50.0.

Ancient gods.

"Is that…" The mayor leaned closer to the screen. "A Sov—Sovereign?"

He glanced at Arthur, but Arthur's eyes remained fixed on the video.

"The unit is splitting into several teams," Arthur said. "Their leaders are heading straight for the Sovereign-tier gate."

The mayor pushed himself to his feet.

"That's what you're focused on?" He pointed at the screen. "Does this kid have a farm for these knights? How does he keep pulling out more of them?"

Arthur finally looked up. "Are you happy or not?"

The mayor eyed him. "I'm relieved. Hopefully they kill the boss without casualties." He settled back slightly, still staring at the screen. "And we need to have a word with him. Our city deserves a guardian."

"When you see him, tell him."

As Abaddon approached the edge of the green gate, he pulled his great axe and tomahawk from his back. The sound of Apollyon's sword leaving its sheath made him turn towards her.

She carried her round shield in her left hand. A large vertical eye was embossed across its face, its eyelid closed.

"It's been a while since we fought in gold," Abaddon said softly as they crossed the threshold and stepped into the ruins of a castle.

Corpses of civilians and guild combatants lay strewn across the grounds, many of them smashed beyond recognition.

Abaddon glanced down. He had stepped into a patch of dried blood, and only two feet away lay the remains of someone who appeared to have died trying to escape.

Fifty metres ahead, a pale-red demon stood atop a slanted pillar, its neck and arms unnaturally long. Great chunks of the pillar had been torn away, leaving so little support beneath it that the demon seemed to stand there as though it weighed nothing at all.

Apollyon's gaze swept across the ruins.

"If you seek my army, they are in your world." The demon's lips never moved. "So… you are the Golden Order knights. Your King sounded quite proud, and our king became… interested."

Abaddon glanced at Apollyon. She was already looking at him.

Apollyon nodded. Then she launched herself forward. She crossed the distance with terrifying speed. In the next moment, the massive pillar crumbled beneath the demon and sent it falling with the debris.

Its lips parted in surprise before its eyes snapped to the left. Apollyon was already there. Her sword came down towards its neck.

The demon smiled.

Apollyon frowned.

Ice erupted from thin air, engulfing her sword arm and freezing both feet in place. Jagged slabs immediately rose from the earth around her, closing together until they sealed her inside. Protecting her.

Then the prison exploded.

Shards of ice burst in every direction like broken glass, and a brilliant golden light shot straight into the demon's eyes.

It hissed and threw up an arm as it retreated. In the split second before the light overwhelmed its vision, it saw that Apollyon had broken free and was aiming her shield directly at it.

The embossed eye was open. Golden light poured from it.

The earth began to shake. Still half-blinded, the demon quickly realised the tremors were footsteps. Through the corner of its eye, it caught sight of Abaddon charging towards it.

Abaddon hurled his tomahawk. Something invisible struck the weapon in midair and sent it spinning into the distant sky. Then the ground beneath Abaddon exploded.

The blast slammed him flat against the earth, nearly knocking him unconscious.

At the same time, sharp spikes of ice erupted around the demon, locking it in place. The demon shattered them almost immediately, but instead of allowing the fragments to fall, it gathered them together as though they were being crushed inside the palm of an enormous invisible hand.

Then it hurled them at Apollyon. She started to raise her shield.

"Stop." the demon said.

Apollyon froze. Her body refused to move. The mass of jagged ice hurtled towards her.

'Melt.' She ordered.

The incoming shards collapsed into water and icy mist just before impact, splashing harmlessly across her armour.

The instant the demon's command released her, Apollyon closed the remaining distance and swung her shield with a grunt.

Something caught it.

Before she could react, another unseen force crashed into her from the right. Her head snapped violently to the side, the impact wrenching her neck so hard it nearly tore her head from her shoulders.

Apollyon staggered and dropped to one knee.

The demon took a step towards her, then stopped.

Abaddon was gone.

It looked up and found the knight high above, descending towards it. A soft sound came from somewhere behind the demon. Something had struck the ground.

It hadn't struck him. That was all the demon cared about as it prepared to flatten the knight falling towards it.

The air exploded. But Abaddon was no longer there.

He appeared behind the demon, beside the tomahawk now embedded in the ground.

Even crouched, Abaddon towered over the demon. His body shifted.

Flesh swelled beneath his armour as he transformed into an orc, his strength climbing from 46.1 to 48.1. He let his great axe fall from his hand and drove a fist towards the demon.

His knuckles struck something he couldn't see. The collision erupted with catastrophic force. Abaddon held his ground.

He still couldn't see what protected the demon, but his instincts and senses were beginning to fill the gaps left by his eyes.

Now he understood.

This demon had giant invisible hands surrounding it.
