Arthur turned his gaze to Godfrey. "Did you know this family adopted me? My wife, however, was born into it. I was quite young then, but the memories of the orphanage remain vivid. I made sure my peers were fed; it was a constant struggle for sustenance due to our numbers and the greed of some. I offered comfort with the few words and morsels of food I possessed. The man you see before you is no stranger to hunger, not from an inability to fight for his share, but because I consciously chose to relinquish it to those weaker than myself."
Arthur continued his movement into the living area. "I found myself battling bullies, most of whom were older. This often resulted in me being brutally beaten, lying on the ground in agony for extended periods. My sole consolation was the thought that at least they weren't harming the others; that's what I told myself."
He settled onto a sofa, his eyes gleaming with an inner light. "That young boy yearned for the suffering to cease with him, believing someone had to bear the pain for others to find happiness. I suppress my emotions, acting as an anchor for those who falter, a source of solace for those who weep. I deliberately adopted this role of a guardian, and I shall depart this world without a single regret."
A gentle smile graced his lips as he observed the quiet Godfrey.
"That is simply how I was shaped into who I am today. You understand that Cain seeks to eradicate trust from this world, from within you. He sows seeds of pain and discord because he harbors a deep-seated fear of what unity and trust can forge, of the potential of a united humanity."
His eyes met Godfrey's, locking into his blue gaze.
"However, in this world, I will wholeheartedly embrace trust." A radiant smile bloomed on his face. "Knowing I might face betrayal time and again, and perhaps even meet my end, Cain will be left to dread the individual who refused to live by his dictates. He will label me a fool, yet harbor a simmering loathing for this fool. For every moment I draw breath, I shall endeavor to forge a path for my daughter and for you."
The brightness of Arthur's smile, the profound peace evident on his features, left Godfrey utterly bewildered.
"I comprehend that you carry pain. We who stand at the pinnacle experience it most acutely; we confront mortality more frequently than others. Power invariably entails responsibility, regardless of one's disposition. It becomes a significant burden. Your suffering may persist, but know this: you are the harbinger of renewed hope and restored joy. In time, you will reconstruct the entirety of Pathan, you will revitalize a broken world, and you will usher in an era of happiness. Allow the pain to find its end with you, with us."
Godfrey lowered himself onto the sofa opposite Arthur and gazed towards the floor before exhaling audibly.
"I believe I ought to pay a visit to my mother."
Arthur's eyebrows lifted slightly.
Godfrey elevated his chin. "My mother is, in essence, the incarnation of the mana tree. You see, I am a deliberate creation, an engineered product of that tree's ambitious pursuit."
Arthur's facial muscles visibly relaxed, acknowledging this revelation as the sort of profound shock that could silence even the most boisterous assembly. He held Godfrey's gaze for a considerable duration before leaning back.
"I suppose it all falls into place now."
"Indeed, it does," Godfrey responded with a notable lack of inflection, drawing Arthur's full attention back to him.
"I cannot imagine it was a pleasant realization for you to discover that mana itself constitutes your mother, and that all of this, the apocalypse and every other cataclysmic event, stems from her actions."
"That is a significant understatement. She looked directly into my eyes and declared that should I falter, I would at least serve Cain as his summoned entity. My demise would be inconsequential; she would orchestrate a method to make me Cain's summon, likely by intercepting my soul and forging a bond with him within his soul space."
Arthur's brow furrowed deeply. Such callousness from a mother toward her child was appalling.
"When did this encounter take place?"
"I have not met her," Godfrey stated plainly. "I was afforded a glimpse into the potential future that awaits me."
"Then she has been maintaining a facade all this time?" Arthur inquired.
"No. My mother… the woman who nurtured me is still present. I surmise the mana tree enabled a distinct personality to develop, given her singular desire for my birth with Pathan residing within my soul space. Beyond that, I possess no understanding as to why she would choose to reveal herself."
Arthur's eyes shifted perceptibly upon hearing this. "It is because she does not wish for you to fail. At the very least, she desires for you to exert your utmost effort to grow stronger, though ultimately, your demise still serves Cain's purpose."
Godfrey cocked his head slightly. "You see."
"However, she remains your mother. The persona that blossomed within you holds genuine affection and will strive her utmost to ensure your safety," Arthur stated with gentle conviction.
"That physical form holds little significance for the mana tree now that its objectives have been met. Furthermore, I doubt the mana tree harbors any inclination to inflict harm upon her. Its sole focus is on you. I mention this so that you do not simply dismiss your mother's affection. I wholeheartedly support your decision to meet her; do not further isolate yourself," he added.
"I believe you require an update on certain matters. Firstly, Sebastian is being transferred to Rikers Island, a facility housing the world's most perilous inmates. My investigation revealed that Sebastian may have lost his sanity, leading him to slaughter every prisoner during yard time. Reports indicate he piled their bodies, alongside those of the summoned police officers, then sat atop the macabre arrangement," Arthur stated, his voice heavy with gravity. Godfrey's brow furrowed. 'Mastery. It's possible he imparted that skill to Paradise. I should have anticipated this.' "They intend to place him in solitary confinement, ensuring no contact with the outside world. Despite the presence of the globe's most depraved individuals, he is deemed the most dangerous," Arthur elaborated. "I am uncertain of his motivations for this act. Whether for amusement or to mislead us, his objective appears to be reaching Rikers Island." Godfrey let out a sigh. "Pursuing Cain would be ill-advised. We lack knowledge of the extent of his plans and his backup strategies. Your suspicions about him lack concrete evidence."
