The protagonist fought off two powerful creatures, leveling up and gaining a new skill. Proceeding deeper into ape territory, they discovered a clearing with a Marrowheart Tree guarded by three powerful apes. After defeating the guards, protagonist consumed the sap from the tree, gaining stat boosts and realizing there was a limit to its power. They decided to wait for the sap to replenish.

After the bowls were replenished, I lifted them and consumed the sap one after another. I was anticipating the system's response, and this time it functioned as expected, granting me an additional +2 to both my strength and endurance. I remained in place, awaiting the next replenishment, and drank once more. However, no notification appeared, and my body registered no further changes.

I lingered for a while longer, allowed another bowl to fill, and drank it just to be certain. Still, nothing occurred. It seemed I had reached the current limit of what this sap could provide.

That settled my course of action.

Placing the bowl back down, I stepped away from the tree, my decision already cemented. Adjusting my hold on the axe, I resumed my movement forward, exiting the clearing as the dense forest enveloped me once more.

As I traversed the woods, my thoughts turned inward, shifting focus from the prospect of the next confrontation to something I had been neglecting until this point – an element that had begun to gain significance as the vastness of this territory became increasingly apparent.

"System, are you there?" I inquired softly while continuing my trek, my eyes steadily surveying the path ahead. "Do you possess any kind of map for this particular territory?"

An immediate response was rendered.

[Kindly examine your shop if you are not otherwise occupied]

I paused momentarily, then released a subtle exhalation.

"Ohh..." I mused, realizing I had neglected to explore the majority of the shop's offerings beyond the fundamental sections I had initially required.

I promptly accessed the interface.

Shop: Recovery || Enhancement || Weapons || Skills || Utility || Influence

My gaze drifted across the various categories, pausing briefly as I contemplated what might have eluded my attention.

"Where should I begin my inspection...?" I pondered, then redirected my focus and selected the 'Utility' category.

The utility panel materialized before me, supplanting the familiar categories with a meticulously organized list. Each item was accompanied by a clear definition, its associated cost, and a concise description. I meticulously perused the available options.

The initial entry that captured my interest was straightforward.

[Map – 200 CP]

[Description: A rudimentary map displaying charted areas and offering a 200-meter visibility radius. It also indicates the presence of nearby entities, including members of opposing factions.]

"I should have investigated this much sooner," I murmured to myself, instantly grasping how substantially this would simplify my endeavors, particularly within a sprawling and unpredictable territory like this.

I deferred the purchase for the moment.

Continuing my examination, I proceeded downward.

Below it was [Storage – 500 CP]

[Description: Provides a storage space with limited capacity for item carrying.]

A useful item, but not an immediate necessity.

Next in line was,

[Appraisal Lens – 400 CP]

[Description: Reveals fundamental information regarding targets.]

This particular item prompted a longer pause, as I considered my previous reliance on manual assessment methods. However, I elected to move past it for the time being.

And then...

[Resource Scanner – 1000 CP] [Description: Detects valuable resources within a 500-meter radius.]

My gaze lingered here for a brief interval, my thoughts drifting to the sap-bearing tree I had just discovered. However, the cost was presently prohibitive.

And subsequently...

[System Communication – 1000 CP]

This item immediately drew my attention.

Focusing upon it, the accompanying description expanded.

[Description: Facilitates communication through the system's medium. It possesses no range limitation, enabling dialogue across the entirety of Orien.]

I became momentarily still. No range limitation.

Which implied—

"Knight... Lyrate..." I whispered, the realization dawning with almost instantaneous speed.

If I were to acquire this capability, I could reach them regardless of their location. For the first time since my arrival, a subtle shift occurred in my expression, the prospect of no longer being entirely isolated beginning to take root.

However, the expenditure was currently beyond my reach.

Allowing the panel to remain visible for another moment, I then released a soft sigh and shifted my focus back to the essentials.

The Map.

That was my primary requirement.

Without further delay, I selected the item.

[200 CP deducted]

The change was instantaneous.

A subtle visual overlay materialized, expanding outwards like a translucent film superimposed upon the world before me. The surrounding landscape began to coalesce, delineating the trees, the stream I had crossed earlier, and the path I had thus far followed.

Beyond my immediate vicinity, new areas emerged as faint outlines, confined to the radius specified, precisely as the description had indicated.

And then came the markers.

Small indicators appeared at the periphery of my vision, subtly shifting as I moved, signifying activity beyond my direct line of sight.

Enemies.

I exhaled a quiet breath.

"Now this is an improvement."

Re-adjusting my grip on the axe, I lifted my gaze from the overlay and looked forward. The forest no longer presented the same sense of enigmatic uncertainty.

I subtly altered my course, following one of the markers, modifying my trajectory rather than proceeding aimlessly through the woods. This time, I did not decelerate to meticulously observe my surroundings. My pace quickened, allowing the map to guide my movement while maintaining my focus ahead. Within mere minutes, the trees thinned sufficiently to reveal another clearing.

At the heart of the area stood a tree bearing a resemblance to the previous one, its form contorted as it oozed a pale sap. However, the moment my focus settled upon it, the ensuing system prompt delivered a distinctly different outcome.

Instead of impacting Strength and Endurance, it was Dexterity and Intelligence that were affected. My grip on the axe tightened a fraction as I surveyed the surroundings.

Three apes. All at level 15. They were positioned identically to before. This time, I dispensed with any pretense of patience.

I advanced directly.

The initial confrontation was fierce, with one of the apes managing to land a powerful blow across my flank due to my overly aggressive advance. Yet, after that singular misstep, the rhythm of the fight quickly standardized. Their movements now seemed sluggish, their attacks more ponderous but easily anticipated. Once I adapted to their cadence, the battle irrevocably tipped in my favor. I sliced through the first ape, transitioned to the second before it could retaliate, and dispatched the third without affording them any chance to regroup.

A notification followed.

[Level Up]

[Level 14 → 15]

[Combat Points +30]

[Influence Points +0]

By the time I concluded the ritual of consuming the sap thrice, I had obtained–

[Dexterity +4]

[Intelligence +4]

"That's quite the effective shortcut," I murmured, placing the bowls back down.

With this newfound efficiency in mind, I proceeded onward, adhering to the markers rather than aimlessly wandering. I cut through the forest, now possessing a clearly defined path. En route, I encountered additional apes scattered throughout the terrain, five in total before reaching the subsequent tree. None of them surpassed level 15, and this time, these encounters did not impede my progress whatsoever. Each foe succumbed swiftly, their coordinated assaults proving less formidable outside the protected zones. By the time I had vanquished them all, I had attained yet another level with minimal exertion.

The third tree materialized into view shortly thereafter.

Its structure mirrored the others, with sap slowly dripping into waiting wooden bowls. However, the effect underwent another transformation as my attention focused on it.

Vitality and Strength. I stepped forward, cleared the remaining adversaries in its vicinity, and drank without a second thought.

[Vitality +4]

[Strength +1]

The disparity in the gains did not concern me. My body immediately felt more robust, the boost in vitality fortifying all other aspects. Even the modest increase in strength complemented my existing capabilities.

Satisfied, I did not tarry. There was but one marker remaining. The final tree.

I moved directly towards it, the forest gradually thinning in that direction, and the palpable presence in the air intensified with my proximity. Upon finally reaching it, the structure aligned with the others, but the associated benefit had once again shifted.

Intelligence and Endurance. Following the subdual of the surrounding apes, I stepped forward, collected the bowls, and partook of the sap.

[Intelligence +1]

[Endurance +1]

The gains were less substantial than before. A notable decline compared to the earlier trees. I gently set the bowl down, my gaze resting upon the tree for a fleeting moment before I simply shrugged, deciding to proceed ahead.
