Damon is attacked and nearly killed, but Xander arrives and reveals he has advanced to the seventh class, intending to kill Amon. Though initially suspicious of Xander's motives, Damon is gravely wounded by an attack from Morticai. Recovering quickly, Damon and Xander engage Morticai, a powerful phoenix, with Xander noting its immortality. Damon attempts to seize control of Morticai's soul within its flames using his Umbral Attribute Magic, but is repelled by the intense heat.

He pulled away before Damon could turn his attempt into something more dangerous, but before he could move any farther, a giant spear smashed into his head.

The impact created a massive explosion of flames.

The flames that had made up Morticai’s head shattered, and the spear cleaved through his body, creating a large crevice that spread for several kilometers across the ground as rocks and debris were thrown into the air.

"You cannot harm me. I am a pure being, immortal and unchanging."

The phoenix’s tail suddenly flicked toward them, and Xander raised his shield, blocking the attack as the impact sent a violent tremor through his body.

"The Ascendant Armors are still as annoying wherever you encounter them."

"You know these armors? Of course you do. You fought the originals who wore them," Xander said, hovering in the air as a dense gravitational field gathered around him.

Damon was grinning as he looked toward Morticai, but the phoenix remained cautious of him and, more importantly, the spear of corruption in his hand.

"Do you mean those fools in Lysithara?" Morticai laughed, his flames twisting as his body reformed. "No, not just them. I fought the actual order of knights this type of armor was originally made for."

His form twisted and turned until it became that of a man with golden hair. His body shrank considerably, becoming much more humanoid. Damon immediately noticed the difference.

The smaller form made Morticai a much easier target for his spear.

"The ones who guarded the Unknown God. The armor was originally designed to counter the Unknown God."

"What?" Damon could not help but be surprised.

"Don’t be mistaken. They weren’t made to harm him. Not that they would work now. It was a long time ago, when he was still young. The original design was made by his grandfather, that wretched, no-good ingrate of a thief, and modified by the Unknown God’s own father."

Damon had heard that the Ascendant Armor came from an order of knights who served the Unknown God, so perhaps Morticai was lying.

"The knights who had this armor served the Unknown God, or rather, the Archon who would officially become the Unknown God. Their job was to protect him."

Morticai’s smile widened.

"But the truth was that they were there to contain him."

"Archon?" Xander whispered.

He was clearly unfamiliar with the term, but Damon did not seem particularly surprised by it, which made Xander frown.

"Are you trying to divide us or buy time?" Xander asked, his spear lowering slightly as gravity gathered around its tip.

"Neither. I can kill you both at any time. I was merely reminiscing about when I could use my power freely and how it felt to fight an actual Ascendant, not the sorry weaklings in this world who wear the armor without knowing what it means."

"If you are done with your mockery, then die."

Damon thrust the spear toward Morticai, its corruption twisting around the weapon like living rot.

Morticai caught the attack with one hand.

The moment his fingers closed around the spear, flames spread across it. He immediately let go and looked down at his hand, his expression changing as the flesh had begun to blacken.

Then he saw the wound.

Black blood filled with writhing maggots poured from his palm.

His eyes narrowed.

He ignited his flames and severed his own arm before a new one was born from the golden fire, the limb rapidly reconstructing itself.

His expression was now much colder.

"Since you both have weapons, it’s only fair that I use my own."

He reached into his chest and pulled something out.

At first, it looked like pure golden flames, sacred and beautiful, radiating an overwhelming sense of holiness. Then the flames condensed and transformed into a flaming sword.

When the sword appeared, Damon felt as if the world itself had groaned.

An invisible pressure began to spread, making his heart squeeze inside his chest. Yet before the power could fully spread, a strange and abstruse law of the universe descended and suppressed it, limiting the power of the weapon to a certain level.

Morticai glanced at his weapon and smiled.

"Behold. You have never seen a weapon like this. In my hands, I hold an Extinction-ranked weapon."

"For your ignorance, let me enlighten you. Someone in the Extinction Rank can bring extinction on a universal scale, and this weapon holds power like that."

"Is that your actual rank?" Damon asked.

"Does that matter? You will die either way." Morticai laughed.

"You should feel honored to die by this weapon."

He raised the sword.

"This is the Nirvana Extinction Sword."

"Are you going to keep bragging about your weapon, or are you going to try and kill me already?" Damon sneered, cutting off Morticai’s words.

Morticai’s expression turned cold.

The killing intent surrounding him suddenly solidified.

A cleave was made.

Damon looked down and found that he had been sliced across the chest.

A thin line of golden light appeared across his armor.

Then flames burst through it.

Blood sprayed from his mouth, dizziness immediately taking over his senses as an intense heat began burning him from the inside out.

"Now your ideals, your memories, your feelings, your body, your spirit, your will, your love, your hate, your enlightenment, your desires... this burns it all, leaving nothing. You will be purified."

"You cannot resist it. You cannot escape it."

Damon could feel the heat increasing throughout his body. He quickly took out a healing potion and poured it into his mouth, but nothing happened.

The flames continued burning.

His flesh continued to char.

So Damon reached out with his own hand and activated his Umbral Attribute.

His shadow surged upward.

He devoured his own wounds.

Then he devoured the flames.

The power of his own enemy was swallowed by the shadows and transformed into something Damon could use to heal himself.

Morticai blinked.

For the first time, genuine confusion appeared on his face.

Then he looked at Damon and gritted his teeth.

"The Umbral Attribute is just as mysterious as I thought. I would expect no less from an attribute from the Abyss."

A spear of gravity suddenly struck him from behind, blowing his body apart.

Xander appeared behind him, but Morticai’s shattered flames suddenly gathered together again. He reformed his body before turning around and slapping Xander away.

"You amuse me, lower realm scum."

Damon looked at his chest and then at Morticai.

"You won’t find me so amusing after I kill you."

He raised his hand and then called out.

[Domain: Shadow Dominion]

All the shadows in the area stopped moving.

Then, from beneath their feet, a vast inky sea of blackness began to spread in every direction, swallowing everything in its path. Darkness covered even the nightmares fighting on the ground and in the sky, and within moments, the entire battlefield was dwarfed by shadows.

The world had changed.

It was now a world of shadows.

Damon immediately felt stronger.

His eyes slowly shifted toward Morticai, who stood within the darkness, his body illuminated only by the golden flames surrounding him.

"Hmph. Is that all? A Quasi-Seventh-Class Domain? If that is your trump card, I’m not impressed."

"No."

Damon’s lips curled upward.

"It’s not."
