My Girlfriend is a Zombie Chapter 1322: The Turmoil Outside the Camp
Previously on My Girlfriend is a Zombie...
At that precise moment…
In the designated landing zone for the helicopter, several high-ranking officials, flanked by their respective teams, were in attendance.
Among them was Yao Haidong, the commander of the Falcon Army, who had succeeded Yuwen Xuan.
With the forces and logistics departments now wielding significant influence, Yao Haidong’s elevated position within the Falcon Army was self-evident.
His personal presence at the landing site underscored the immense importance of the individuals arriving by helicopter.
As the helicopter executed its final descent, the murmurings among the assembled personnel, intensified by the thrumming rotor blades, became audible.
“Does anyone know who is on board?”
“My sources indicate they are Survivors from the Central Region Camp.”
“The Central Region Camp? Weren’t they the major faction that previously proposed an alliance of humanity with us? How could such a calamity befall them as well?” one individual exclaimed in stunned disbelief.
After the Cataclysm, the dissemination of information was a sluggish affair. While some individuals might be privy to certain news, others remained entirely unaware. However, with the helicopter’s touchdown, word spread with remarkable speed.
Yao Haidong’s expression was grave, yet he made no move to silence the ongoing discussions amongst his subordinates.
Concealment was simply not an option…
Truthfully, his own awareness of the situation had not preceded theirs by much, but there were always avenues for obtaining information.
This was particularly the case given their existing alliance with the Central Region Camp…
Now, their ally had been utterly devastated, compelling them to brave crossing a thousand kilometers of perilous territory in search of sanctuary with Falcon. Although Falcon appeared secure for the time being, Yao Haidong and the other senior leaders couldn't shake off a palpable sense of impending doom. The most unsettling aspect was their complete ignorance of the cause behind the Central Region Camp’s destruction…
Compounding his unease, the recent accusations of poor strategic decisions leveled by Su Qianrou during the Meeting, the offense taken by Ling Mo, and the meteoric rise of Miracle Base added to Yao Haidong’s distress.
He was, in fact, one of the senior leaders who had vehemently pushed for the reclamation of Miracle Base and the elimination of Ling Mo…
“I only hope they don’t bring devastating news, and that the ‘secret’ they alluded to is genuine…” Yao Haidong’s gaze fixed upon the slowly opening cabin door. Steeling his resolve, he pushed aside his tumultuous thoughts, adopted a solemn smile, and proceeded towards the helicopter.
“Welcome, welcome! Your journey must have been arduous.”
“Indeed, it was far from easy.”
“You must have endured considerable hardship on your travels, haven’t you?”
Amidst the exchange of courteous greetings, the Falcon personnel discreetly observed the Survivors from the Central Region Camp who had miraculously reached Falcon Camp.
They comprised two young females, a child, and one man who appeared physically robust.
While engaging in conversation with Yao Haidong and the others, the young girl remained close to the girl wearing a hat, maintaining her silence. The other girl, her complexion pale, stood composedly beside the man. However, it was primarily the man who addressed the Falcon representatives, clearly establishing himself as the leader of their small group.
“My designation is Zhang Dongyao. I previously served as a captain and a superhuman operative at the Central Region Camp.” Following his self-introduction, Zhang Dongyao eagerly presented the young girl, seemingly overlooking the other two females. “This is Anan.”
“So, this is the young girl who managed to survive…” Yao Haidong, having already received partial intelligence, regarded the child with a new perspective. Yet, the more he observed, the more perplexed he became… This child appeared to be an ordinary human. Despite her unusual composure, such behavior was not entirely uncommon among Survivors. How had a child like her eluded the Zombies?
Furthermore, the revelation that Zombies had actually established a structured “city” with a rigid hierarchy was a profound shock to his understanding of the world. While he had encountered similar rumors previously, hearing accounts was one thing; witnessing direct confirmation from survivors was an entirely different matter.
For the average members of the Falcon Army, news of this nature was even more startling.
Sensing the skepticism in Yao Haidong’s gaze, Zhang Dongyao promptly explained in a hushed tone, “She survived by sheer luck, concealed within a pile of deceased. Her brother, a superhuman, initiated an extensive search upon realizing they were separated. Perhaps due to the short timeframe, her small stature, and her scent being masked, the Zombies failed to locate her. However, she did confront those Zombies directly… And, she overheard a significant amount of their activities.”
“And what of her brother?” Yao Haidong inquired, showing a degree of increased belief.
“He made the ultimate sacrifice to ensure our escape to your Camp.” Zhang Dongyao conveyed a touch of sorrow before swiftly adding, “This matter is of paramount importance. I request an immediate convening of a Meeting. I will present Anan at the Meeting to elucidate all details.”
“Understood…”
Yao Haidong was poised to concur, but he observed the young girl looking upwards and quietly stating, “I wish to remain with my sisters.”
“Anan, your elder brother will escort you…” Zhang Dongyao interjected quickly.
However, Yao Haidong had already granted permission, “Allow them all to attend together. After all, the four of you arrived as a unit.”
Zhang Dongyao hesitated, his mouth forming an opening, but ultimately conceded. A fleeting, malicious glint crossed his eyes.
If he could exert control over the entire situation, he envisioned leveraging this opportunity to acquire influence within the Falcon Camp.
Yet, with all four present, his potential share of influence would inevitably be diminished…
“You little wretch!” Zhang Dongyao cursed internally.
Having successfully brought Anan to this location, he no longer harbored significant concern for the young girl; after all, escape was not an option for her… Regarding the other two girls, he had only refrained from letting them perish outside because they were necessary for the protection of the little girl. It was unfortunate that he hadn't managed to eliminate them before they entered this place…
Unbeknownst to anyone else what Zhang Dongyao was contemplating, Yao Haidong ordered a meeting to be convened and directed that they be escorted to the Meeting Room.
However, at that precise moment, his gaze suddenly shifted towards X City.
“Awroo!”
A unified howl from the Zombies—a truly uncommon occurrence…
A Falcon Member, upon receiving a transmission via the communicator and listening intently, reported to Yao Haidong, “There appears to be some unrest among the Zombies outside. We're unsure of the cause.”
An instinctive sense of unease washed over Yao Haidong. Yet, considering that the crisis in Central City was still a distant threat, he rationalized that perhaps it was merely some high-ranking Zombies engaging in territorial disputes…
The matter concerning the little girl held greater urgency. After a moment's deliberation, he gestured dismissively, “Maintain a vigilant watch. Should the situation escalate excessively, discharge a few rounds to instill fear.”
Let them raise a ruckus; no matter the extent of their disturbance, could it possibly breach the defenses of the Camp?
A flicker of arrogance crossed Yao Haidong’s features, accompanied by a touch of self-derision…
Yet, an observation that escaped his notice was that as he cast his gaze outward, the little girl simultaneously lifted her head.
A profoundly complex emotion flickered within her previously vacant eyes. Subsequently, she tightened her grip on the girl's hand.
“Sister, I’m frightened,” Anan whispered.
The girl enveloped her in an embrace, but Anan’s gaze remained fixed in that specific direction. “I’m scared…”
