My Girlfriend is a Zombie Chapter 1320: The Secret of the Zombies!
Previously on My Girlfriend is a Zombie...
The uproar from the gunfire swiftly reached the ears of the Commander stationed at the hospital’s firepower point. However, after observing the situation through the Protective Wall for a duration, the Commander spoke under the anxious gazes of the Falcon Members: “We shall wait and observe.”
“But…” one of the Falcon Members voiced his hesitation.
The Commander immediately shot him a glare, his countenance darkening as he declared, “We cannot afford to take risks recklessly. We cannot simply squander ammunition every time Survivors appear to aid them, can we? Furthermore… whether they can even reach this location alive remains a question…”
Yet, sensing the expressions of the surrounding Members, the Commander grudgingly added in a subdued tone, “Machine Gunner, prepare yourself. If these individuals approach within fifty meters, open fire to provide assistance.”
“Yes…” some Members still conveyed their displeasure.
“It’s merely a matter of firing a single shot…”
“Indeed, it's infuriating enough that we’re forbidden from engaging zombies beyond fifty meters, and now we must even witness our own kind under attack.”
“This unspoken truce with the zombies is truly exasperating!”
As early as several months prior, these individuals had discovered that following repeated cycles of evolution, the zombies had already established a highly organized pattern of action.
This was proving to be dire for humanity… Yet, when the zombies consciously halted their advance beyond the fifty-meter mark, the senior leadership of the Falcon actually enacted a policy of not initiating attacks on zombies situated beyond that threshold.
In its stead, there were recurring small-scale zombie assaults, with humans adopting a purely reactive stance.
“But in actuality, this approach facilitates the zombies in culling the weak, preparing sustenance for themselves, and we are continuously subjected to their tests and surveillance! If this continues, something catastrophic is bound to transpire eventually!” A Machine Gunner lay prone at the tunnel's entrance, grumbling with frustration.
However, after his outburst, a profound silence enveloped everyone nearby.
It was only after several seconds elapsed that someone eventually sighed, “Who among us is unaware of this… Let us cling to the hope that those Survivors manage to reach us alive and convey some positive tidings. Ever since the Air Force Corps transformed into Miracle Base, we have been completely ensnared by these zombies. Apart from a select few superhumans capable of venturing out for supplies and intelligence gathering, we possess no other information at all…”
“You’ve lost your mind! Speaking of Miracle Base!” another person nearby immediately retorted.
While the Falcon Members maintained a state of heightened vigilance…
Not far away, within the confines of the Alley, the Survivors were making swift progress toward the hospital.
But just as they caught sight of the hospital edifice, a substantial muffled explosion reverberated from the direction of that very structure. Immediately thereafter, numerous zombies dispersed.
“Old An detonated the Grenade…” The young girl, adorned in a cap, shivered, her hand tightening its grasp on the hand of the little girl, Anan.
Anan, however, remained unresponsive, not turning her head to look back on this occasion.
The pallid-faced girl accompanying them also halted her steps, then her eyes suddenly widened as she exclaimed, “Go, go, quickly! There isn't much time!”
The man who appeared to be leading the contingent also bellowed, “Hurry!”
Yet, after advancing barely twenty meters, a zombie suddenly descended from the adjacent wall.
The girl who had previously been positioned by the window had just called out for someone to dispatch the zombie when more of them began to materialize along the wall, one after another.
It was evident that deprived of the building’s distraction, the zombies had now taken notice of this Alley.
The group struggled valiantly to fend off the encroaching zombies while attempting to accelerate their pace. But at this critical juncture, a zombie silently breached the wall, seizing the girl by the nape of her neck.
“Ah!” The girl emitted a piercing shriek, her eyes wide as she gazed upon the nearest man, “Captain Zhang, save me…”
Captain Zhang cast a glance her way, initially displaying a flicker of apprehension, followed by a sinister glint in his eyes: “This foolish woman! Such a foolish woman! To actually scream!”
“Captain Zhang…” The girl pleaded, tears coursing down her face.
“Were it not for your appearance and your willingness to keep me company, why would I have brought you along! It matters little now. Success is within reach, and I can manage those two as well.” Captain Zhang’s gaze swept over the two young girls positioned near Anan, his lips curling into a self-serving thought.
Engrossed in this contemplation, he abruptly shifted his hand, a ruthless expression crossing his features, and plunged the knife into the girl’s abdomen.
The girl, who had been under the impression he would offer rescue, stared with disbelieving eyes, her face etched with shock amidst unbearable agony.
“Continue screaming; you’ll help buy us some valuable time. Consider this: wasn't it you who suggested Old An sacrifice himself? Now you have the opportunity to achieve something equally monumental, so cease this pretense of guilt…” Captain Zhang muttered, then withdrew the blade.
Lost in the surrounding pandemonium, no one bore witness to this grim tableau.
Captain Zhang offered her a smile, then suddenly bellowed, “Everyone, run!”
“You…” The girl had no recourse to speak, as the metallic tang of blood had already incited the Senior Zombie lurking beyond the wall. With a dull thud, the tunnel entrance behind her was instantly enlarged, and she was forcibly dragged onto the wall, a gaping maw emerging from the darkness to clamp down upon her neck.
Subsequently, several more zombies swarmed forth, tearing her body asunder from the front—
With her eyes wide open, the girl fixated on Captain Zhang’s retreating form, an unblinking gaze following him. Having witnessed the demise of two more Team Members, the Survivors managed to escape the confines of the Alley. Yet, as the hospital loomed ever closer, despair and sheer madness clouded the faces of the group. One Survivor barely managed twenty meters before being consumed by the ravenous zombie horde, with another succumbing immediately after. “Shoot! Why aren’t you opening fire!” the pale-faced girl shrieked, her voice directed at the Protective Wall. However, behind the imposing wall, only an unnerving silence prevailed. It wasn’t until the escaping group entered the fifty-meter kill zone that volleys of gunfire erupted from the Protective Wall. The girl in the cap swiftly covered Anan’s ears before her own knees buckled under the immense strain of exhaustion. Captain Zhang remained rigidly still, hesitant to make a move, his voice strained with urgency amidst the cacophony of gunfire, “Let us in! I am Captain Zhang, the Deputy Team Leader of the seventh squad, hailing from the Central Region Camp. I have brought a critically important young girl with me! Furthermore, I possess a wealth of vital information! Please, grant us entry!” With those words, he rapidly crouched and scuttled towards the girl in the cap and Anan. Gripping Anan’s wrist tightly, he exclaimed, “She… she holds immense significance! She might… she might possess the key to understanding the secret of the zombies!”
