Marvel: The Villain Chapter 406 Careful
Previously on Marvel: The Villain...
After being shredded by Angelina, Brian seemed to have a sudden epiphany.
His sweet date with Gwen that evening was a far cry from his usual extravagance. There were no convoys of supercars, no entire nightclubs booked for a private party. Instead, it was like any other ordinary couple’s night out.
They ate, they walked, they saw a movie... and they even did homework together.
When the night drew to a close, he didn’t try to pressure Gwen into going to a hotel. Instead, he hailed a taxi and saw her safely home.
"Man..."
Sitting in the car on his way back, Brian reflected on the night’s date. He could hardly believe he was the one who had planned it. But Angelina had been right—if he kept flaunting his wealth so aggressively, someone was bound to notice. Once their identity was exposed, he’d be dragged back to Wakanda and forced to say goodbye to this glittering world forever. To ensure long-term pleasure, he had to learn some restraint.
Brian leaned back against the rear seat, resting his head as he watched the New York nightscape blur by. As they entered Long Island, the skyscrapers faded, replaced by an endless dark stretch of greenery accompanied by the chirping of crickets.
Suddenly, a flash of eerie blue light flared in the distance.
Brian figured it was just an electrical surge from a faulty line and didn’t think much of it, continuing to lounge in the back while waiting for the driver to drop him home.
...
The blue light Brian had spotted wasn’t a power failure spark. It was the glow of the Tesseract as Thor tore open a shimmering blue portal through space.
To evade Jason’s pursuit, Thor and Loki had agreed to use the Space Stone, intentionally leaving breadcrumbs behind. They hoped this tactic would confuse Jason and buy them as much time as possible. After ten days of cosmic travel and strategic decoys, Thor finally led the Asgardian refugees to their final destination: Earth.
On a stretch of shoreline in Long Island, thousands of refugees stepped out from the portal and huddled together on the rocks by the beach. The pain of being displaced was palpable; their faces were etched with anxiety and dread.
Over the past few days, the reality of their situation had finally sunk in. Hearing that Odin, the All-Father, was dead made them feel as though the very heavens had collapsed. Asgard under Odin’s rule had been a paradise. Its people lived in peace and prosperity, never worrying about survival, their days spent in laughter.
But Odin had protected them too well.
These citizens were unaccustomed to labor and lacked even the most basic survival skills. Their minds were as innocent as children’s. Suddenly struck by this catastrophe and dragged from heaven into hell, they were utterly lost—clinging to one another like helpless lambs, weeping in the dark.
Seeing his people so demoralized, Thor felt the weight of the world on his shoulders. But remembering his father’s final charge, he tightened his grip on Mjolnir and leaped onto a rock face. Facing the crowd, he channeled his father’s booming authority and shouted:
"Seeking refuge on Earth is only a temporary measure! As long as I am here, you have nothing to fear! Once Jason is killed, we shall return immediately—back to our beautiful home!"
As it turned out, having a loud voice had its perks. Thor’s brief, blunt speech offered the refugees some comfort, and a flicker of hope was rekindled in their hearts.
Heimdall, holding the Bifrost Sword, watched Thor from the shadows with a proud smile. The passing of his father, a formidable enemy, the expectations of his people... so many heavy burdens had been thrust upon Thor at once. Yet he hadn’t been crushed. Instead, he had undergone a rapid metamorphosis from a reckless warrior into a wise king. As a long-time friend, Heimdall was glad to witness this day.
After the speech, Thor found Heimdall and Loki. "Our priority now is to find the Avengers. But Earth is crawling with Jason’s remnants, so we must tread lightly. We cannot expose ourselves."
Hearing this, Loki immediately suggested, "Go find Tony Stark! The other Avengers are always off the grid, but he lives in that tall, ugly tower. You can see it from miles away."
They looked up toward the skyscrapers of Manhattan.
Thor thought for a moment and nodded. "Good idea. You two stay here and look after the people."
"No..." Loki objected instantly. "You’re wearing armor and carrying a hammer—you stand out like a sore thumb. Don’t forget, you’re an Avenger too; you probably have fans all over the streets."
"It’s fine, I can change clothes!"
Loki continued, "Fine, and what will you say when you get to Stark Tower? ’Hey, gatekeeper, I have urgent business with Tony Stark, let me in’? Or perhaps, ’I am Thor, God of Thunder, move aside or the wrath of Odin shall fall upon you’?"
These were Thor’s usual catchphrases. They might have worked in other parts of the universe, but right now, hearing them out loud made for some serious second-hand embarrassment.
Heimdall let out a muffled chuckle while Thor stood there, looking awkward.
Loki smirked. "Brother, you know nothing of Earth’s social graces. Better let me come with you."
Thor narrowed his eyes, staring at Loki with suspicion. His expression practically screamed:
"Don’t look at me like that!" Loki said. "Our father is gone and Asgard has fallen to this. I’m not exactly thrilled about it. And when it comes to taking down Jason, we’re on the same side."
Loki’s words made sense, and Heimdall added, "Thor, go together. When it comes to interpersonal communication, Loki is indeed more adept than you."
With his old friend backing the plan, Thor had no choice but to agree. "Fine. Let’s go."
...
Half an hour later, the brothers appeared on the streets of Manhattan. To avoid drawing attention, Loki cast an illusion over them. To any passerby, they looked like ordinary civilians in plain clothes.
"They’ve rebuilt the city!" Walking along the sidewalk, Loki looked up, observing his surroundings with genuine interest.
"Yeah, no thanks to you. Maybe the humans should give you an award? A Nobel Prize or something?" Thor couldn’t help but snark.
The last time Loki visited Earth, he had caused hundreds of thousands of deaths and leveled a city. Walking through New York with him now gave Thor a lingering sense of guilt, as if he were an accomplice harboring a criminal.
Loki, having tried to start a conversation only to be insulted, shut his mouth and picked up the pace.
After ten more minutes, they reached the front of Stark Tower. Even late at night, the building was ablaze with lights, and dozens of security guards in tactical vests were patrolling the area.
They stopped. Loki smiled and asked, "You or me?"
Thor gave him a flat look and stayed silent. He had to admit that in dealing with people, Loki was far more skilled, whereas Thor was more of the ’punch first, ask questions never’ type.
Loki grinned triumphantly and stepped toward the entrance.
"Stop! Please show some identification!" A guard blocked his path before he could take more than a few steps.
Thor watched from a distance as Loki whispered something to the guard, whose posture immediately relaxed. The two stood at the door chatting for a while before Loki finally turned back.
"Failure?" Thor asked.
Loki shook his head. "Stark sold the tower. He moved to a base upstate."
Thor frowned. "Is this base far?"
Loki nodded. "Quite. So I asked our friend there to drive us."
Thor was taken aback. "What exactly did you say to him? He’s actually willing to drive you?"
"Social engineering is only part of it. The most important part was this..." Loki pulled a thick stack of cash from his pocket.
The realization hit Thor like a bolt of lightning; it was as if a new door had opened to him.
The guard was just about to get off his shift. After receiving a stack of Benjamins, he hopped into a pickup and drove the two toward the upstate facility.
Along the way, Loki chatted amiably with the guard, subtly extracting years of intel about Earth’s current state. Thor, having been stripped of his speaking privileges by Loki, could only stare out the window in boredom.
...
Upon reaching Stark’s new base, Loki once again used his silver tongue to handle security. After some maneuvering, the brothers finally stepped inside and met Tony Stark, who had just been dragged out of bed in his pajamas.
Tony shot Loki a look of pure annoyance before grumbling at Thor, "You couldn’t have come earlier? Or, I don’t know, tomorrow morning?"
Thor’s expression turned somber. "Tony... my father has passed... and Asgard has been destroyed."
At that, Tony’s sleepiness vanished instantly. "Oh my God! I thought your dad was the All-Father, the King of Gods. Who could possibly kill him?"
Thor stared at him with deadly seriousness. "Jason!"
"What!" Tony jumped off the sofa.
Thor sighed and laid out the intelligence regarding Jason. Upon hearing that Jason had absorbed four Infinity Stones and assembled a massive fleet, Tony was left speechless.
Jason had been away from Earth for over a decade. The tragedies of the past had begun to fade in Tony’s mind under the wash of time. He was married now, had a lovely daughter, and cherished his current peaceful life.
But that peace had just been shattered.
Jason. Again.
Everyone thought he had died on some godforsaken planet. Instead, he hadn’t just survived—he had become even more powerful!
Tony walked to the liquor cabinet and poured himself a drink to steady his nerves. Once he’d calmed down, he asked, "Do you have a plan?"
"There is no other way but to fight!" Thor said. "Jason’s goal is the Infinity Stones, so he will eventually come to Earth. I’ve made some arrangements in space to slow him down and buy us time to gather allies."
Tony’s face darkened. "Allies?"
"Exactly!" Thor said. "You, me, Steve, the big guy... and most importantly, we must find the Sorcerer Supreme!"
Tony said, "I think Steve has something to contact the Sorcerer Supreme."
Thor was overjoyed. "Excellent! Contact Steve immediately. We’ll go visit the Sorcerer Supreme together. If she’s willing to join us, we have a fighting chance!"
Tony took a sip of his drink and looked down, silent.
Thor, still riding the high of the news, urged him, "Don’t just sit there. Make the call."
Tony shook his head and kept drinking.
Thor was bewildered. "What is wrong with you?"
That was when Loki spoke up. "I’m guessing the two of them have completely cut ties."
In the car, Loki had extracted quite a bit of information from the guard. This included the presidential assassination that had shocked the world ten years ago, followed by the news of Iron Man and Captain America’s falling out.
Reminded by Loki, Thor recalled what the guard had said. He didn’t care about their petty drama—not with the stakes this high.
"You must have his address, or some way to contact him," Thor pressed.
Tony looked up, tapped a virtual screen, and said, "I do. I’ll give you the address; you can go find him yourselves."
Thor tried to reason with him. "Tony, you should go! I’m not from Earth; I don’t understand your addresses. And even if I convince Steve, are you really going to avoid each other when the final battle with Jason comes? You were teammates once."
Tony slammed his glass onto the table and sighed. "You don’t understand. It’s not that simple."
Thor wasn’t having it. "Then tell me, what exactly happened between you two?"
"I..." Tony hesitated, then said, "I killed his best friend!"
"What?" Thor was confused. "Why?"
"It wasn’t my fault... his friend killed my parents first!" Tony explained quickly. "You should understand that feeling. I couldn’t just ignore my parents’ murder!"
Knowing the truth of the matter, Thor didn’t know how to argue further. He could only nod. "Fine. I’ll go find Steve. But... you two need to make up. Even if I know it won’t be easy."
Tony looked pained; he didn’t want to discuss it further and changed the subject. "I’ll send people to bring the Asgardian refugees here immediately. Until this is over, they shouldn’t be out in public, or we’ll alert the enemy."
"Good. I’ll leave the arrangements to you."
"Also, be careful. The situation on Earth right now is... grim."
"What happened to Earth?"
Tony’s voice was heavy. "The Joker. We thought that without Jason, they’d be a disorganized mess, but everyone underestimated them. The Joker organization vanished in Africa for three years, only to resurface and seize Wakanda. Then, using Hydra and moles within SHIELD, they manipulated Steve into killing the President, then puppeted the Vice President to take the throne."
"Right now, the government, the business world, the media, the military... Earth is firmly in the Joker’s grip. Whatever you do next, you must be extremely careful!"
