Half the knights mounted on their steeds couldn't help but chuckle at Jax's pronouncements.
One, with a wide grin stretching across his face, turned to the paladin who was holding the child. "Did you hear that, Chief? This brat is actually threatening us."
All gazes shifted to Jax. He simply drew his sword, allowing the blade to glint in the dappled sunlight filtering through the leaves.
"You lot fail to grasp the situation, don't you? But allow me to illustrate the grim reality that awaits."
His tone deepened. "Before long, this ground will be drenched in blood. Corpses will litter the very spots you stand upon. And the bitter taste of regret, for ignoring my words, will be your final sensation."
He surveyed them deliberately. "You'll lament your choices when your spirits witness your families enduring unimaginable suffering. Your children. Your parents. Your wives. When they see your lifeless forms being carried back home."
He let the heavy silence hang in the air. "Choose with prudence. And step aside."
A few of them visibly flinched. The vivid images he had conjured were indeed taking root, planting seeds of fear that wormed their way up their spines, vertebra by vertebra.
Yet, one paladin erupted in boisterous laughter. "Pff... hahaha... please... stop... I'll surely die from laughing so hard—"
His mirth was abruptly silenced as a sword pierced his mouth, the blade entering from the front and exiting through the back of his skull.
Jax had closed the distance in an instant, faster than anyone could process the movement. He could no longer contain himself and charged the loudmouth, intending to silence him forever.
A flicker of fear crossed some faces. Rage, however, ignited in others. The horse carrying the now-deceased master reared in panic and bolted, its rider's corpse tumbling onto the grass.
Witnessing this, most of the other horses began to exhibit similar distress. They reared high, hooves flailing wildly as if sensing a threat their foolish riders had failed to perceive.
The paladins had no recourse but to dismount.
Jax now found himself encircled by over fifty armored men on foot. Each pair of eyes burned with vengeance for their fallen comrade.
Jax withdrew his sword from the loudmouth's mouth with a sickening crunch. "I issued a warning. I offered you an escape."
He scanned the ring of vengeful visages. "But judging by the fury in your eyes, I see individuals utterly determined to make widows of their wives."
A chilling, hollow smile spread across his face as he finally lifted his head. "Who am I to deny your final, desperate wish? Prepare yourselves. The time for deliberation has passed. Now, the hour of reckoning begins."
The carnage commenced following those pronouncements. The four girls observed from a distance.
Lavinia spoke first, idly twirling a dagger between her fingers. "Don't you girls think we should join the fray as well?"
Delphine, without looking away from her fingernails, replied, "Why bother?"
Lavinia tilted her head. "Isn't this our examination?"
Evangeline finally broke her silence, for the first time in what felt like ages. "It was our task from the outset. However, it appears our professor is too eager to return home and intends to clear this dungeon himself by eliminating that young sorceress. So, why should we intervene?"
Lavinia lowered her voice. "But it's dangerous for him to fight alone."
Evangeline's gaze remained fixed on the unfolding massacre. "Dangerous? For whom? Look over there and tell me who is truly in peril."
Back in the heart of the battleground, Jax stood panting, his sword dripping blood, his anger palpable. Alone.
At his feet lay severed heads and bodies, cleanly separated by his relentless blade. Despite being vastly outnumbered, the fear was entirely contained within the opposing ranks. Some paladins stared at the man standing amidst their comrades' spilled blood, their legs refusing to obey. Others clung to their pride as fiercely as they gripped their swords.
One paladin hissed through gritted teeth. "You have made an enemy not only of our empire but of the entire world! And for what?" She gestured towards the girl dangling from the chief's grasp. "A mere child. You've committed a grave error, and retribution for every life you've taken will be exacted."
Jax remained silent. In a flash, the distance between them dissolved. Before the paladin could even raise his shield, Jax's hand shot forward. His fingers found purchase through the narrow gap of the helmet, plunging directly into the man's face. He gripped his skull, rendering his head completely immobile.
With his other hand, Jax slowly drew the edge of his sword across the man's exposed throat. He ensured that every remaining paladin was a witness.
He spoke, his voice devoid of any leniency. "Did I not state that the time for discourse has concluded?"
Then, he pressed the cold steel deeply and pulled with agonizing slowness, slaughtering the paladin like a sacrificial offering. He let the blood cascade out, saturating the earth beneath them.
The chaos intensified once more. Amidst the pandemonium, Jax relentlessly struck down paladin after paladin with escalating fury, each blow more savage than the last. His assault didn't cease until merely a handful remained upright.
He advanced towards the chief paladin, who still held the young girl captive.
The chief immediately pressed his sword against the child's throat, his hand quivering. "Stay precisely where you are! One more step, you monster! Take one more step, and I swear by the heavens, I will slit her throat!"
Jax paid no heed, continuing his advance.
The chief gritted his teeth, poised to drag the blade across the girl's neck, when suddenly, his arms were seized from behind. A brutal knee strike to his spine sent him hurtling forward, directly towards Jax.
It was Bruise Lee, who had been summoned moments prior without anyone noticing.
As the chief stumbled towards Jax, propelled by the force of the kick, two swift slashes severed his left hand, then his right. Jax, without even a glance, strode past the screaming, now handless, man on the ground.
He turned his attention to the girl. The very same one the quest had designated for him to eliminate. She was still in a state of shock, sobs interrupting her breaths.
Jax moved towards her, lifting her gently into his arms, cradling her against his chest. "It's alright now."
His gaze then shifted to the remaining thirteen paladins. His expression transformed, the warmth vanishing, his voice regaining its chilling emptiness.
"I am leaving you alive out of pity. Furthermore, I require witnesses. Individuals who will broadcast to the world what transpires when anyone dares to target this child."
He kicked an armored head as if it were a football, sending it rolling towards them.
"They will all face the same consequence as long as I stand beside her. Now, depart. Before I reconsider my leniency."
Fear propelled them away. However, one among them hesitated, trembling. He approached the handless chief on the ground, pausing as if silently seeking permission to retrieve him.
Jax remained indifferent. He turned and began to walk away.
The girl held in his arms was rendered speechless by shock, unsure of what to utter. Jax too, found himself at a loss for words or a next course of action.
Lavinia was the first to catch up, the rest of the girls trailing behind.
Matching his pace, she remarked with a cheerful tone, "Hey Professor, you were a bit excessively brutal back there. Did you forget this is the real world? You just committed mass murder."
Jax continued walking, the child still held in his embrace. "I issued a warning first. Yet, they remained fixated on this child. A child who has yet to even witness the world. Thus, I removed them from existence instead." He paused. "But I was not cruel. I have changed considerably, you know. I even showed them mercy."
Evangeline raised an eyebrow. "Mercy?"
Jax glanced sideways at her. "When I made them envision their families, I was observing their faces. I memorized each individual who trembled at the thought of their children and wives weeping over their bodies. It was those thirteen I left alive."
His voice turned flat. "The ones I eliminated were those who did not flinch. The true monsters."
The girls contemplated his words in silence. Yet, only Athanasia perceived a different facet of him compared to the others. She understood Jax was treading a path that would ultimately lead them all to ruin. She knew he hadn't saved this child merely to end her life with his own hands. And if her intuition was correct, he would stand in their way. This implied they would all remain trapped in this world until he either regained his senses or succumbed.
She spoke with measured calmness. "Professor, what will you do now? With this child? I can confirm she is the witch the dungeon alluded to. She possesses power far beyond anything I have witnessed. However, she lacks the ability to control it."
Jax had no immediate answer. He simply gazed down at the child's eyes within his arms.
Then, Delphine interjected with a shrug. "Is that even a question? Eliminate the child. It's obvious. That's precisely why we are here. It's already taken too long, so we should hurry and conclude this."
The child within Jax's arms absorbed every word. Her eyes met his face. The emotion they now held was no longer fear, but betrayal.
Her small hands struck against his chest. She pushed herself away from him, struggling until he released her, and she fell to the ground.
