Jax was thoroughly pissed. His precious time, the one resource he could never farm enough of, was being burned through like cheap firewood.
His plate was stacked so high it could qualify as a tower. New arrogant students enrolling at the academy who would inevitably test his patience. Mischievous champions who had likely sneaked their way into the institution by now. Some out-of-nowhere revenge plot that was probably already brewing against him for his recent actions. Then there was that Loki girl Echidna had mentioned, a Celestial who was apparently already making moves against him.
And on top of all that, two dates. One with Astrid that he couldn’t miss because of his promise. And also didn’t want to miss because of Astrid herself. Then another with Zharina that he hadn’t planned, also he didn’t know why he asked for but still it was a reward anyway.
All of it would devour his already nonexistent free time. And right now, the most infuriating thing on this entire list was the fact that Sianna wasn’t in her castle.
The guards informed him with the enthusiasm of men reading a grocery list that the Duchess had departed for an expedition on the southern border of her dominion. Dire beast hunting season. Apparently the creatures were at their peak power during this period and not only grew stronger but multiplied rapidly due to intense breeding driven by their unstable energy fueling their lust.
He had left the academy in the morning. Reached her palace by afternoon. And now it was late into the night as he finally arrived at the southern borders. A whole day wasted just traveling to a woman who wasn’t where she was supposed to be. And the next whole day would be spent on her kitty.
All his frustration found a release through the guards and soldiers stationed along the route. Each one fed him the same rehearsed line about how no one was permitted to enter the expedition zone because the Duchess was there hunting.
So Jax stopped wasting words on them and started talking with his sword instead.
Every checkpoint met the same fate. At minimum one severed limb per station. By the time he had marched through the fifth one, he was soaked head to toe in blood that wasn’t his.
He was pushing forward through the forest when the ambush hit. Multiple vampire mages and knights materialized from the shadows around him. Bows drawn. Swords raised. Mage staffs and grimoires radiating with magic and murderous intent.
Jax scanned them. Every single one was a vampire woman. Some kind of female order dedicated to the Duchess’s personal protection. To him they were nothing but the latest batch of victims lined up for his anger to process.
But before anyone could make a move, a voice cut through the tension.
"What is the meaning of all this, Professor Jax?"
Duchess Sianna walked toward them from between the trees. She wore light, thin armor that hugged her frame practically. Beside her stood two women. One was unmistakably her daughter, the one she had previously mentioned wanting to propose a marriage with Jax. The other appeared to be her commander.
Every soldier present bowed immediately. One of them spoke up. "Your Grace, this man marched toward your location despite being denied permission at every checkpoint. We tracked him from the eastern perimeter where he ruthlessly severed the fingers of our battalion members stationed there. We were about to—"
Sianna raised her hand without looking at the woman. The report died in her throat.
She walked to Jax. Folded her arms. Stood inches from his face with a gaze designed to make men tremble and question their life choices.
Jax didn’t flinch. Didn’t blink. Didn’t even shift his breathing.
Sianna felt defeated by those dead-calm eyes and said. "What are you doing here?"
Jax, still breathing heavily from the fights but rapidly composing himself, said. "Just came to claim what’s mine from our little bet."
"And what exactly do you need?"
"You, obviously. Don’t you remember the part where you said you’d be my slut—" He coughed. "I mean slave."
Sianna contained her anger behind a wall that was developing cracks by the second. "I don’t want to waste my time. End your games and tell me directly what you want."
"It’s you."
She rubbed her temples with the weariness of a woman who had already suffered this man’s existence once and was now being forced into a second serving. "Drop your act this instant. It’s making my blood boil. State your real motive. Why did you plan all this? Why do you want to destroy what I’ve built? Is this some revenge plot? Did I do something to you? Your family? Someone connected to you?"
Jax smiled. "Now that you mention it, yes, you did try to make Elira’s life a living hell even while knowing I was standing behind her. But that’s not what I’m here for. There’s no revenge I’m seeking from you."
His hand moved toward her face, his thumb tracing slowly across her lips. The soldiers arrayed behind Sianna instantly tensed, hands flying to their weapons, bodies poised to spring into action.
However, Sianna subtly gestured them to stand down, never breaking her intense gaze with Jax.
He continued, utterly unfazed by the twenty pairs of eyes that seemed intent on burning holes through his skull. "And regarding my intentions, I made them perfectly clear from the very beginning. I desire you. You alone. Just for a single day. A day where you surrender your body to me."
Sianna's fist shot out towards his face. Jax intercepted it mere inches from its target, then gently brought her gloved knuckles to his lips and bestowed a soft kiss upon them.
Her rage was becoming almost impossible to contain. "Stop toying with me. I will end you right here and put an end to all of this."
"Calm yourself, my queen. I genuinely desire you, and that is final. If you truly believe I am bluffing, why not enact another oath?"
He located a sharp edge on her armor near her collarbone and pressed his thumb against it. Blood began to well up, trickling down to drip onto the verdant grass below them.
Sianna was utterly convinced this was another ruse, a theatrical maneuver he would inevitably abandon at the final moment. Nevertheless, she proceeded with the same ritual. She cut her own finger, allowing the blood to fall upon the sigil that materialized on the ground between them.
To her profound astonishment, Jax actually performed a blood oath. A genuine one, binding him to spend the subsequent twenty-four hours exclusively with her. Only pleasant moments were to be permitted, and absolutely no political harm was to be inflicted upon her name, her lineage, or her standing.
Sianna found herself bewildered. She promptly appended further conditions, certain he intended to humiliate her on the first day only to exploit the reserved second day to strip her of everything. Thus, she stipulated that the same non-harm clause should extend to the second day as well.
He readily consented. Without the slightest hesitation.
It was then that Sianna comprehended his strategy. This scoundrel hadn't arrived to destroy her reputation. He had come to debase her publicly, right before her own people, on her own territory, upon her own ancestral lands.
She addressed everyone present with clear authority. "Return to the camp. That is an order."
Her daughter stepped forward, her voice laced with desperation. "Mother, surely you aren't contemplating complying with his demands? Please, reconsider. We can eliminate him right now and be finished with it all."
Sianna met her daughter's gaze and replied with measured calm. "Allow him his fleeting triumph today. But remember this, no matter how brilliantly the sun shines at this moment, it eventually sets. We merely need to bide our time in the shadows until his era concludes."
Her daughter's fists clenched tightly. "Then I vow, I shall be the one to strike him down first when the appointed time arrives."
Sianna continued, "You need not concern yourself with such a triviality. Your priority is reaching Astryx Academy. Your studies commence the day after tomorrow."
Her daughter attempted to interject, "But Mother—"
Sianna disregarded her plea, turning instead to the woman standing by her side. "Nadia, ensure her safe and timely arrival at the academy."
She then raised her hands, gesturing towards Nadia. The unspoken command was unmistakable.
Nadia's eyes welled with tears, yet she made no effort to dissuade her mistress from her course of action. She understood Sianna's resolve far too well for such an attempt. All she could do was obey. Thus, with hands that trembled, she commenced the removal of Sianna's armor, piece by piece. The lighter outer plates came away, followed by the underlayers.
The twenty members of the elite female guard turned and departed, escorting Sianna's daughter with them. Not out of desire, but because they could not bear witness to the unfolding scene.
Following the removal of her armor, every remaining layer of fabric was shed. Layer upon layer, until Sianna stood utterly exposed at the precipice of the cliff. Her body was laid bare to the crisp mountain air. Her vulva was discreetly framed by a neat tuft of short, yellow curls. And behind her, the full moon hung low, bathing her form in its ethereal silver luminescence.
Jax could endure it no longer. He shed his pants and undergarments. His erection was already fully engorged as he closed the distance between them.
Nadia turned away, retreating from sight, finding herself unable to remain for even a moment longer.
Jax moved to initiate a kiss, but Sianna placed her hand against his chest, creating space between them with her arm held rigidly straight.
She spoke with unyielding authority. "First, honor the blood of our ancestors. Invoke the name of Bloodmond and activate the price that will seal our binding."
Jax drew a deep breath. Then, he spoke, his voice resonating with a blend of feigned reverence and genuine compliance.
"By the blood spilled and the oath sworn beneath Bloodmond’s crest, I invoke the rite of claim. One day. One price. One binding. Let the victor of this wager summon forth what was promised, and let the bound answer without resistance. The debt is declared. The blood remembers. And thus, it shall be honored."
The sigil materialized upon both their chests, glowing crimson. It pulsed once, then settled into their skin like an indelible brand that existed beyond the mundane world.
Jax inquired, "Your Majesty. May we commence now?"
His lips moved to kiss her again. His rigid member was now pressed against their stomachs. The heat emanating from it against her frigid skin caused Sianna’s expression to contort with revulsion. She abruptly turned her head away, rejecting the kiss.
The instant she refused, a searing agony shot through her entire being. The binding sigil inflicting punishment for her defiance. Her ensuing shriek reverberated throughout the vast cliff face and out into the darkness of the night.
Jax’s eyes widened in alarm. He hastily recoiled. "Forgive me, my queen! I had no idea such a consequence would arise!"
He spun around, retrieved his sword, and purposefully drew the blade across his own hand. Blood instantly began to well up from the wound.
"I shall atone for my transgressions with my own lifeblood."
From her kneeling position, Sianna observed him. She watched as he deliberately angled his wounded palm downwards, allowing the crimson liquid to fall steadily, meticulously. A wide grin stretched across his features as he did so.
Letting the blood drip directly onto his engorged cock.
