Kill the Sun Chapter 988 Inexperienced

Previously on Kill the Sun...
The Duskbringer awakens, confronting memories that are not his own and the guilt of a life lived by Nick, the man he embodies. As he breaks free from his containment, he grapples with intense emotions and the weight of his identity as both a creation and a continuation of Nick's legacy. Fluctuating between admiration and resentment, he resolves to rise to the demands placed upon him. Upon witnessing Daniel's sacrifice, the Duskbringer reflects on the alliances and sacrifices made for humanity’s survival, questioning Nick's choices as he prepares to determine his own path amidst chaos.

Daniel could only watch in a state of powerlessness as the slender General materialized directly before him.

BANG!

Suddenly, the General swung its weapons to intercept a strike coming from its right flank.

Though tiny fragments chipped off its armaments, they mended themselves in a heartbeat.

'What on earth?' Daniel wondered.

His consciousness swept over the remaining Nightmen, realizing instantly that the assault hadn't originated from any of them.

"I warned you to prioritize offensive strength over recovery speed," the Duskbringer's voice echoed in Daniel's mind via transmission.

Daniel’s eyes grew wide with shock.

"Nick?" he questioned, his voice laced with horror.

"No time for chatter. Support me," the Duskbringer commanded the Nightmen as he snatched the weapon shard he had successfully broken off.

Without hesitation, the Duskbringer tossed the fragment into his mouth.

As the shard dissolved into Pure Energy, the Duskbringer gained an intimate understanding of the thin General’s biological structure.

Nick had, of course, converted the majority of his Zephyx powers into Pure Energy Techniques; his biological analysis skill was among those he had adapted.

A moment later, the thin General vanished once more, prompting the Nightmen to reform their ranks.

Throughout this encounter, the Duskbringer remained hidden.

The Nightmen were unable to perceive his presence.

However, a complex mental transmission from the Duskbringer soon reached them.

Even though both combatants remained invisible to their eyes, they now possessed the coordinates of the thin General.

"Recover and hold the line!" the Duskbringer ordered.

The Nightmen turned their gazes toward Daniel.

He was their designated commander, not this mysterious newcomer.

"Execute his commands," Daniel transmitted, slowly regaining his physical autonomy.

The thick Star Energy saturating the vacuum allowed him to replenish his Pure Energy at a rapid pace.

Acting immediately, the Nightmen circled Daniel, locking into a defensive shell.

BANG!

A violent eruption shook the space where the thin General stood, yet the creature managed to withstand the blow.

The thin General retaliated instantly, causing a massive spray of blood to paint the void.

The Duskbringer recoiled, a severe wound opening across his chest.

'I haven't fully adjusted to combat at these velocities. My consciousness can track the movements, but my physical reactions aren't yet instinctive. I lack true battle experience with these specific Techniques,' the Duskbringer reflected.

As the Duskbringer continued his retreat, the thin General pursued him relentlessly.

By this stage, the General had also managed to sense the Duskbringer's location.

Suddenly, the thin General leaped backward as a massive surge of energy tore through the space he had occupied a second prior.

The Duskbringer wasn't fighting this battle alone.

From the periphery, the other Nightmen were providing long-range assistance.

This interference provided the Duskbringer with the vital window needed to regain his composure before charging at the thin General once again.

The thin General grasped the severity of its predicament.

While it could likely overpower the newcomer, doing so while the Nightmen remained active was a different matter.

An instant later, a focused barrage of rotating blades whistled toward the Nightmen.

"Do not break formation!" the Duskbringer warned.

The Nightmen lacked the raw power required to block such a devastating strike.

Their only hope for survival lay in evasion, but scattering would shatter their formation and leave them vulnerable to a follow-up execution.

"Listen to him!" Daniel transmitted.

The Nightmen held their ground.

The wave of blades bore down on them.

Then, the lethal projectiles abruptly vanished into thin air.

DING! DING! DING!

The thin General was forced to defend against a flurry of spinning blades that had suddenly reappeared behind its own back.

'The teleportation skill is still functional,' the Duskbringer noted. 'I modeled it after the Maw, and it appears to be compatible with Pure Energy. I suspected as much, given that the aliens utilize portals as well.'

'Unfortunately, redirecting an opponent's attack via teleportation consumes a massive amount of Pure Energy.'

"Unleash your attacks!" the Duskbringer transmitted.

The Nightmen launched a series of ranged strikes. The thin General dodged some while parrying others.

Each time it blocked a hit, the sheer kinetic force momentarily pinned it in place.

During one such opening, the Duskbringer manifested a portal next to the General and another directly in front of himself.

The Duskbringer lunged—

He suddenly jerked to the side as several blades erupted through the portal toward him.

The thin General had anticipated the portal and sent its own counter-strike through the rift.

'I was too slow,' the Duskbringer thought.

'It is burning through a lot of Pure Energy with those strikes, but its reserves are deeper than mine.'

'Time for a different strategy.'

In the blink of an eye, ten copies of the Duskbringer split off from the original.

They swarmed the thin General, who was forced into a retreat.

How had their numbers suddenly increased to ten?!

The General struck at one of the Duskbringers, but its weapon passed through the figure as if it were mist.

Illusions!

Even realizing they were fakes, the thin General struck out at all of them with blinding speed.

There was a high probability the true body was hidden among the decoys.

The thin General activated several sensory powers to alter its perception.

It knew its own consciousness was too fortified to be deceived by mental tricks.

Therefore, these phantoms had to be physical manifestations involving the manipulation of light, space, or Star Energy.

Suddenly, it detected a heavy gravitational pull radiating from one specific illusion.

It was warping the fabric of spacetime.

Ignoring the other decoys, the thin General struck at the perceived real body.

Its blades sank deep, resulting in a violent explosion of blood.

But then, the General’s survival instincts screamed in warning.

It threw itself to the side.

CRACK!

One of its limbs shattered into fragments as the very first illusion it had ignored carved through it with a blade.

The thin General realized several truths in that heartbeat.

First, the foe could simulate gravitational weight to deceive it.

Second, the enemy was capable of swapping positions with an illusion via teleportation.

However, the General also understood that chaining such sophisticated Techniques together was an immense drain on one's energy supply.

The fact that the enemy hadn't secured a killing blow meant they had failed their gambit.

But then, the Duskbringer abruptly consumed the severed arm.

In an instant, a fresh wave of biological data flooded the Duskbringer's mind.

"Buy me some time to recover!" the Duskbringer transmitted to the Nightmen, reappearing safely within the center of their defensive circle.
