Isekai Nonbiri Nouka Chapter 1063: Village Chief Enjoys the Island to the Fullest
Previously on Isekai Nonbiri Nouka...
My name is Hiraku.
Hiraku Machio.
I am village chief of a small village.
And recently, we decided to develop an island.
I don’t know what we can accomplish there, but I’ll do my best.

I was given some of Yame’s tea.
It was good.
Very good.
Perhaps this was what the herbal teas I’d seen on television in my previous world were like.I don’t think I’d want to drink it every day, but once a year… no, maybe once every few years… or perhaps once the memory of the taste had faded, I might be willing to drink it again.
It had that kind of charm.
Even though my throat was rejecting it and I felt like I was going to throw up.

We used teleportation magic to travel to the island.
I asked either Ancestor-san or Rana-san to handle it.
At first, I went by sailing ship, though.
I wanted to experience arriving on the island by ship for the first landing.
That’s all.
The advance party had already developed the island quite a bit.
It’s not that I didn’t want to do the work myself, but that didn’t mean I could tell the people who arrived before me not to build toilets, kitchens, and places to sleep.
So the island no longer felt like an uninhabited island.
There had been a proposal to choose an untouched area for my first landing so I could get the feeling of arriving on an uninhabited island, but since I selfishly insisted on arriving by ship, I decided not to do that.
They told me I didn’t have to hold back, but that wasn’t it.
There were other things I wanted to do too, so I was simply restraining myself.
Sorry.

And then, development.
I worked hard together with the 【AFT】.
I cleared paths, leveled areas where buildings would be constructed, and dug caves.
It reminded me of when I used to live by myself.
Somehow, it felt like the 【AFT】 was enjoying itself too.

The High Elves rapidly built the foundations of the buildings.
This would probably be a good time to use the Multi-Purpose Humanoid Mobile Heavy Machine (Arti-Horse), but transporting one to the worksite would be difficult.
Besides, while it could be useful for laying foundations, it wasn’t particularly useful for working on the finer details of a building.
The best we could do would be to use its huge body as a mobile work platform.
That would be a waste.
One unit for underwater work was enough.
Oh, right. Speaking of which, Yoru had acquired a pilot suit.
She happily rode around in the Multi-Purpose Humanoid Mobile Heavy Machines in the village.
However, she was still an amateur when it came to piloting.
One little mistake caused her to fall over badly.
Yoru was unharmed, but the Multi-Purpose Humanoid Mobile Heavy Machine she had been riding was completely wrecked.
She is currently extremely depressed.

The island’s facilities and infrastructure were coming along smoothly, but something important was still missing.
Food production.
If we simply left things to nature, there would be more than enough for Yame-san to live on by herself.
But supporting around ten people would be difficult.
That was the conclusion reached by the expedition team.
And from what I’d seen, Yame-san hadn’t exactly been enjoying a rich diet either.
So it was time for the 【AFT】 to make an appearance, but…
What should I grow on this island?
They said the winds were harsh here.
And there didn’t seem to be many places suitable for farmland.
It’s a tropical-looking place, so should I focus mainly on tropical fruits?
Pineapples, mangoes, mandarins, limes… bananas might be good too.
As for grains… considering the wind, maybe I should focus on root crops.
Then there are root vegetables like radish, carrots, and turnips.
I could grow sugarcane too.
I’d also like coffee beans and tea.
Oh, and maybe I should grow spices, like they do in Village Four.
……….
Before I knew it, I’d cultivated quite a large area.
Maybe I went a little overboard.
I should have thought a little more about the timing too.
It seems I’m more excited about this than I realized.
I need to rein myself in.

We’ve been told there are no powerful demon beasts or monsters on this island.
It’s safe.
But that doesn’t mean there are none at all.
There are small demon beasts and monsters.
Apparently, there are slimes too.
We shouldn’t forget to stay vigilant.
I reminded the kuros who were guarding me, as well as the spiderlings, to be careful.
Don’t let your guard down, okay?

The birds that Yame-san cares about.
I don’t really know what species they are, but they look like parrots.
They have colorful feathers.
And those feathers.
Yame-san brought some to Big Tree Village as souvenirs from the island, and Loo immediately took an interest.
「Feathers from a Rainbow Bird!」
It seems Yame-san only wanted to bring something back that would make the children happy.
I told Yame-san that the feathers had value, so she’ll probably start collecting them from now on.
She seemed to be thinking about receiving some sort of payment for them.
Though, knowing Yame-san, she might say they’re the birds’ property.
……
She really did.
Maybe I should arrange for the birds to receive some food in exchange.
I wonder what they eat?
Sunflower seeds, perhaps?
-0-
The birds happily ate the sunflower seeds.
Good.
Well, I’d grown a little too many over the summer.
I originally grew them as feed for the chickens, but the oni maids who take care of them had just told me that giving them too many wasn’t good.
So, birds of the island, don’t eat too much either.
Incidentally, Aegis, the Phoenix chick, and the eagle didn’t even look at the sunflower seeds.
Apparently, they’d rather have roasted meat or fish.

The watchtower on the island.
It’s quite impressive, but it’s designed with the assumption that it will be destroyed.
The idea is that it’s cheaper to build watchtowers that can be easily destroyed than to build sturdy ones and keep repairing them.
After all, I’ve only heard from Yame-san about how severe the island’s storms are.
We won’t know how bad they really are until we experience them.
The last thing I want is to build something sturdy only to have it destroyed.

I’d like a railway connecting the harbor currently under construction to the area around the inn built by the expedition team.
Railways have been considered, put on hold, and modified several times in Village Five.
The problem isn’t technical. It’s a matter of morality, since there’s a possibility that the rails could be stolen.
But no one would steal them on this island.
Even if someone did, there would be very few ways to get them off the island.
It’s about as safe as it gets.
The main problem is that the sea is nearby, so the iron in the rails would rust. However, Gutt and the blacksmiths in Howling Village have been researching rust-resistant iron for some time.
It would be made by mixing rare minerals into the iron, but it should be fine to use it here.
Ah, it doesn’t have to be done right away.
Whenever we have some free time.
I’ll tell Gutt and the others that too.
There’s no need to rush.

We cleaned the beach.
Even on an uninhabited island, all sorts of things wash up on the shore.
Mostly seaweed, driftwood, nuts, roots, leaves, and the remains of marine life.
The carcass of a gigantic ray smelled terrible.
There was also something that looked like a giant frog egg, though I couldn’t tell whether it was from a demon beast or a monster. We weren’t sure what to do with it.
The Seakins advised us to burn it, so we burned it thoroughly.
I had been cleaning the beach by myself, but before I knew it, the Seakin had started helping me.
They said it was their way of thanking us for the feast.
Sorry about that.
It’s a big help.
-0-
In the end, everyone used large rake-like tools to turn over the sand and collect the trash buried underneath.
The beach turned out quite beautiful.
It made me want to put up some parasols.
Though we’ll probably have to clean it regularly.

Yame-san told me a heavy rain was coming.
She had judged it from the wind and the weather in the distant sky.
The High Elves, Angels, and Seakins all said the weather was going to worsen too.
Then it probably would.
They recommended that I return to the village, but I decided to spend the night at the inn built by the expedition team.
I wanted to experience the island’s rain for myself.
That didn’t mean everyone had to stay, though.
Only a few people needed to remain on the island.
So I had most of them return.
They put up quite a fight over it, though.
Those who remained on the island were me, three Inferno Wolves, and ten Demon Spiders.
There was also Gulf, a Beastkin who serves as my guard.
And Yame-san.
She stayed because she knows the island so well.
The Seakins took refuge on the seabed near the island.
They said they’d come rushing over if anything happened, but I told them not to push themselves.
Seriously, don’t overdo it.
We’ll be fine here.
Ancestor-san, who can use teleportation magic, had returned to the island too.
If things got bad, we could escape.
-0-
The heavy rain came.
The amount of rainfall was incredible.
And the wind was just as bad.
It was like a typhoon.
But the inn didn’t budge.
It had been reinforced the moment I said I was staying.
There weren’t even any leaks.
The birdhouse had been reinforced in the same way, so it should be fine too.
I’d considered evacuating the birds to the inn, but they refused because they had eggs.
So we’d reinforced the birdhouse thoroughly instead.
All we had to do now was wait for the rain to stop.
According to Yame-san, the sky should be clear by dawn tomorrow.
Trusting her prediction, we spent the night playing games in the common room.
-0-
The next morning.
The sky was perfectly clear.
The inn and birdhouse were safe.
There was no damage.
Thank goodness.
The watchtower had snapped in half.
Oh!
And the beach we’d cleaned was a complete mess again.
Oh boy.

Seakin: 「Fire purifies everything.」
Village Chief: 「Is that really something a Seakin should be saying?」
Seakin:「There are volcanoes on the ocean floor too, so it’s fine.」
-0-
Ancestor-san: 「After I finished transporting everything from the island back to the village, I was planning to take it easy. Then Dors-kun, flanked by Hakuren and Rusti, asked me to do something, so I came back to the island.」
-0-
Village Chief GM:「All right, night has ended.」
Ancestor-san:「Seer claim! Gulf is a werewolf!」
Yame:「Wait, I’m claiming seer too! Gulf is a villager!」
Gulf:「What are you two doing? (I’m actually the werewolf. Yame isn’t a werewolf, right?)」
Kuro Pup A:「Woof woof woof. (Hmm, should we lynch the seers?)」
Spiderling A:「Sa. (Would it be bad to sit this one out and see what happens?)」
Kuro Pup B:「Woof. (Is Yame a madman?)」
Spiderling B:「Sa-sa. (She could be a fox. Oh, and I’m the medium.)」
Kuro Pup C:「Woof. (If she were a fox, she wouldn’t fake a role knowing it could get her lynched.)」
Spiderling C:「Sa-sa-sa. (Which is exactly why she’s claiming seer.)」
Ancestor-san:「(I can’t understand any of this discussion without Village Chief translating…)」
Yame: 「(Why are the Inferno Wolves and Demon Spiders the ones having the most serious discussion here?)」
Gulf: 「(I’m terrible at this kind of thinking… I guess I’ll just bite Ancestor-san when night comes?)」

※Just kidding. Village Chief’s previous life didn’t leave him with enough spare time to learn how to play Werewolf.
