’Hmmm, interesting.’ Theo thought while he looked at the evolution abilities.

’I wanted to get some options for a defense beast, but instead, these are more suited for a transport beast...’

Theo thought about it a little and a light smile formed on his face.

’I will keep looking for defense beetles, but for now, I guess this will do.’

For the next few hours, Theo did his best to get the beetle to complete the requirements. The hardest one was the defeating part of the requirement.

The beetle wasn’t fighting with anything he sent to it.

Until Theo had to resort to a rather meaner option.

He sent in a millipede he had gotten a few days ago from a merchant who said he would keep supplying them to him as long as the money kept coming in, which was easy enough to do.

The moment the millipede was inside the beetle’s box, it skittered everywhere while the beetle flew up.

Theo closed the lid and waited patiently. He was at his roots again and needed to make the insect he was trying to develop do some things on its own too.

The millipede had already spotted the beetle moving from left to right without landing on the ground.

It moved its long body up into the air while some of its lower body kept its posture straight.

It was tracking the beetle’s movements as if it were the most natural thing to do.

Until the beetle ran out of stamina and landed in the corner.

The millipede moved so fast toward the beetle that Theo had his heart skip a beat. It was creepy, to say the least.

The millipede wasn’t letting anything stop it from getting a good meal. It went and pounced on the beetle and wrapped its long body around it as if trying to strangle it.

Theo couldn’t even look at the beetle properly with how many legs were moving over it.

He took a deep breath and waited patiently while his mind drifted toward intrusive thoughts like taking the beetle out of the box.

But there was a bitter truth to it. There was no lack of beetles in the world. If Theo wanted more, he could get them easily.

Right now, the beetle was getting a chance of a lifetime, to evolve. And Theo wanted to see how far it could go on its own against a predator like a millipede.

After a minute, just when there were no movements at all from the corner, Theo sighed as if thinking it was a failed experiment.

But suddenly, the millipede moved up with its whole bulky body.

Theo looked down and his eyes widened. The beetle was carrying the whole millipede’s body with its legs.

The millipede was way bigger than the beetle, and to lift it up with just those small legs was something Theo acknowledged and wrote down in his notes.

The beetle started thrashing its body left and right, forward and backward in an attempt to loosen the millipede’s grip.

And Theo could see that it was the millipede’s body that was being thrashed around against the ground and the corner wall.

A few minutes of just that and nothing else later, the millipede slowly lost its grip on the beetle’s body and moved a little to the side.

The way it moved made Theo know that it was hurt to some extent.

’It used raw strength like the ape before the sword. Instead of cutting up the enemy like the mantis, maybe this is another good way of fighting.’

While the millipede was to the side, taking a rest, the beetle, on the other hand, moved the shell on its back, allowing the delicate wings to come out.

It flew forward right toward the location of the millipede, who couldn’t do anything about it.

The beetle just landed on its body and used the hard mandibles in the front to grab onto the head of the millipede.

The millipede didn’t just idle around. Seeing how its life was in danger, it latched its body around the beetle again.

But this time, something was different. The millipede moved its body again and tried to flip itself. Its lower half started curling up and moving left and right in an attempt to break free.

Theo moved closer to the box to look at what the beetle really was doing.

Its big mandibles had the millipede’s head locked in place, and Theo could see the mandibles shivering.

After just half a minute, Theo could tell what the shivering was.

It was the beetle trying to exert as much force on the millipede’s head as it could.

And just like that, the millipede’s head and part of its body got crushed by the force of the mandibles, making it get pierced.

Even after having something like this happen to it, the millipede kept thrashing, and only after a minute or so did it start slowing down until it curled its body slightly.

Theo could see the number turn to one and took a deep breath.

’Sometimes, the outcomes are just too unpredictable. I was ready to lose the beetle just now as the millipede was one of the insects I was going to evolve for myself and the colony. But it just overpowered it without any ability I know of... it was natural strength.’

Theo could feel a weight in his heart, and it was not a bad one. He finally had one more goal being worked toward, and it felt like there was excitement in his life again.
