Theo faced three challenging beasts sent by Professor Velra: a metallic panther, a reptilian creature, and a large bird. Velra decreed Theo must survive these academy-level trials, with killing only permitted as a last resort. Theo's mantis companion engaged the bird while Theo focused on the panther and reptilian beast, attempting to isolate and defeat them.

Theo pushed aura into his legs and moved at an angle. The brown fluid shot out and melted the ground where it landed.

Theo felt cold sweat go down his back.

’It can use fucking acid too...’

The moment the beast’s head was still coming back from the shot, Theo closed the distance and struck with his sword.

He didn’t go for the skin of the back or the jaw but instead the eye.

The beast reacted just in time and shut its eye with a thick layer of skin that took the blunt side of the attack.

But the real goal was never the eye.

Theo’s boot already went forward and kicked right at the lower side of the jaw.

The mouth snapped shut and the reptilian beast hissed in real pain this time.

Theo moved back quickly and in the same instant, the panther pounced again from the side as if it had been waiting for the opening.

Theo used the armor-covered shoulder and smashed it into the panther’s body.

The collision made pain run through his body but to Theo’s surprise, the beast too was sent slightly off course.

’So this armor really is made for this...’

Before he could think further, a splash hit the back of the reptilian beast’s neck.

Theo looked up for a moment and saw the mantis had done it.

While the poison had shot directly at the reptile beast, the mantis was able to splash some on the bird beast too, making it panic too.

’Nicely done, mantis’ Theo game appreciation.

The mantis came down and landed right beside Theo.

The two stood side by side for a split second and all three beasts looked at them again.

The panther was pacing around to find an opportunity like before. The bird was still in the air but lower now, which Theo thought had happened because of the poison that splashed on it.

And the reptilian beast had become a lot more careful after the jaw hit.

Theo took one deep breath and looked at the beast kennel spot that turned into a battlefield. There was no arena wall nearby.

There was no referee waiting to stop the battle, nor a count of hits.

Only him, the mantis, and three beasts that wanted to break them.

Theo felt his blood boil at the thought. This was a lot better for his heart, it pumped really fast making him feel the adrenaline he was used to.

"Professor Velra..." Theo muttered under his breath with a determined expression on his face, "Maybe I should thank you for this one."

The mantis let out a screech as if it fully agreed and the bird dived again while the panther lunged.

Theo was not able to hear or see Belra’s reaction as the beasts pounced at him.

The reptilian beast opened its mouth for another acid shot.

At that moment, Theo’s spatial senses expanded around him again as if a level up had happened, and all three trajectories became clear.

’Mantis, right-side beast first. I am going for the panther,’ Theo commanded.

The mantis hopped with all its legs and vanished into motion.

Theo ran forward with the sword covered in aura again and a smile that looked more dangerous than before.

The panther-like beast was not slow at all and when it saw Theo moving straight for it, it changed directions twice in a matter of one breath.

Its body became a black blur that kept moving left and right as if it wanted Theo to guess wrong just once.

But anything in Theo’s spatial senses could not fool him like that.

His head moved from one angle to another with the calculations already done in his mind.

’You are going for the ribs first and then the neck if I move the wrong foot.’

Theo’s steps became weird to look at for anyone from the outside as he moved diagonally while still going ahead.

The panther’s pupils shrank when it realized that the human in front of it was not following the normal flow of a fight, but it still lunged.

The right claw came toward Theo’s chest while the left one stayed lower.

Theo’s sword slanted down and pushed the upper claw away while his armored knee went up right at the lower side of the beast’s body.

The impact made a low grunt come out of the panther and at the same moment, Theo twisted his wrist.

The blunt side of the sword moved up and smacked right at the jawline of the beast.

The panther’s face moved to the side but instead of backing away, it used its own momentum to swing the tail around.

’This damn thing.’

Theo moved his torso back just enough and the tail passed right in front of his nose.

It was not just a normal tail either, there were small scale-like ridges on it that could peel skin away if they touched properly.

Theo had no time to be relieved as the reptilian beast was already moving from the side too.

The mantis had reached it by now and did not listen to Theo’s earlier order fully.

Instead of only attacking and coming back, the mantis had latched onto the side of the beast’s neck and its forelegs were digging in again and again.

The reptilian beast started shaking its whole body like a mad thing while trying to get the mantis off.

Theo saw all that in one glance and his mind moved.

’Keep it busy like this, mantis’

But then a loud screech came from above and Theo’s jaw tightened.

The bird had folded its wings and was coming down not at the mantis this time, but straight toward Theo.

Its beak was pointed down and those talons were spread in a way that made Theo know getting caught under them would not be a joke even with the armor.

Theo shoved the panther’s face away with the hilt of the sword and immediately jumped back.

The bird crashed where he was just standing, and its talons dug into the ground with no resistance.

Pieces of dirt and stone flew around like a small storm

Theo felt one hit the side of his face and another bounce off the armor on his arm.

’This is getting absurdly good.’

The thought was insane, but Theo didn’t mind.

The bird was trying to pull its talons out of the ground and Theo saw the opening right away.

He moved forward with a burst and pushed aura into the sword.

The blade came down toward the bird’s leg joint.

The beast felt it was too late and Theo’s sword connected with full force.

The scales there were not as tough as its talons and Theo saw the blade bite just enough to leave a proper wound.

Dark blood splashed out and the bird let out a cry that sounded like metal being scraped.

Before Theo could follow up, the panther was back.
