Bai Chunyu’s reminder made Wu Di think back to the Black Cloak Squad’s desperate battle in Tianshui City and the subsequent purge of the Eclipse Moon organization.
His expression grew irritable as he scratched his head hard. “What a hassle!”
He muttered softly but didn’t say anything more.
Not far away, Huahua sat cross-legged in her giant form, her soft fur shielding Zhou Ke’er, Yang Xinxin, and the others in the center.
Fatty Xu, Uncle Yu, and Liang Yue stood guard around the perimeter, weapons in hand.
Deng Shentong’s heart stirred as he gazed at the petite, adorable girl in the black combat suit nestled in Huahua’s arms.
Yang Xinxin’s existence was a secret to the outside world.
She had almost never participated in direct combat, making her a relatively inconspicuous figure within Zhang Yi’s team.
Yet Deng Shentong knew that she was Zhang Yi’s most crucial strategist.
He had investigated Yang Xinxin and understood just how terrifying this genius girl’s mind was.So he walked over and asked her, “Miss Yang, may I ask what your thoughts are on the current situation?”
Yang Xinxin lifted her head coldly, her pitch-black pupils devoid of any warmth.
“You initiated this mission, yet you’re coming to ask me?”
Her blunt words left Deng Shentong rubbing his nose in embarrassment.
“I admit, I didn’t do my intelligence gathering thoroughly enough.”
Yang Xinxin let out a light snort, as if in disdain. Her icy gaze gave the feeling of being seen through, forcing Deng Shentong to instinctively look away.
She spoke indifferently. “There are only two possibilities.”
Deng Shentong’s heart leaped with joy at her words. He quickly pressed, “Oh? I’d love to hear the details!”
“First, an absolutely powerful Transcendent has appeared in Edo City! Judging by the scope of their ability’s influence, they must be a very high-level Epsilon-class. As for their exact strength, we’ll have to wait until Big Brother returns and we see what useful information he brings back to judge.”
Deng Shentong nodded, rubbing his chin as he said, “Neon’s territory isn’t even half the size of the Jiangnan Region, and Zhang Yi already swept through its two major organizations, North and South, killing off almost all their top Transcendents. So it’s nearly impossible for them to have anyone too powerful.”
“If there is, I’d guess it’s from the Colombian garrison forces.”
“Then, what’s the second possibility?”
Yang Xinxin covered her mouth with her hand, yawning adorably. She hadn’t been out on missions in too long, and the cold and boredom outside were making her drowsy.
“As for the second possibility… it’s something other than humans!”
Her jet-black eyes gleamed with an eerie light in the depths of the night, like black gemstones. She seemed to grow excited whenever she mentioned those mysterious, unknown things.
Deng Shentong swallowed hard, struggling to conceal the shock within him.
“You mean… that Neon has encountered an unknown civilization similar to the one back home?”
Yang Xinxin gave a cold smile.
“That’s just my speculation.”
It was indeed just a guess. But if it were true… that would be a massive problem.
A faint, barely noticeable trace of worry flickered across Yang Xinxin’s cool expression.
She knew all too well the dangers of the underworld. Any underground civilization, once it truly emerged into human society, would bring about tremendous catastrophe.
…
In Edo City, Zhang Yi tried again to make contact with two ghostly apparitions and kill them.
But the results were the same every time—a failure. Those things simply couldn’t be killed!
His gaze swept toward the center of Edo City, where on the Tianshou Pavilion Avenue, the dense, powerful ghostly apparitions were far beyond anything he had encountered before.
If he ran into them… Zhang Yi might genuinely be in danger.
He thought it over carefully and ultimately decided to withdraw from Edo City for now.
Given the current situation, besides the ghostly apparitions, no one else in Edo City seemed to have discovered Zhang Yi and his team’s movements.
Otherwise, war would have already broken out.
There was plenty of time ahead—no need to rush. He would take the intelligence he had gathered back first and figure things out tomorrow.
With that in mind, Zhang Yi immediately left Edo City and returned to the area where Deng Shentong and the others were stationed.
“Zhang Yi!”
“Boss!”
“Captain!”
The group swarmed around him as soon as they saw him return, as if finding their anchor. They looked at him with hopeful eyes, waiting for him to share some information.
Zhang Yi recounted everything he had seen along the way.
“Oh, right, I also got some things. Ke’er, come take a look at this!”
Zhang Yi pulled out the biological tissue he had obtained from the Slit-Mouthed Woman. But when he opened the metal container he had stored it in, he was stunned.
The item he had clearly put in there with his own hands had vanished!
“This… is really troublesome!”
Zhang Yi furrowed his brows.
He couldn’t understand this situation.
Unless he had genuinely encountered the ghostly apparitions of Edo-era Neon.
The others exchanged bewildered glances, but Zhang Yi said, “Let’s find a place to rest for now! Then wait until dawn. Also, set up a shift rotation to keep an eye on Edo City’s nighttime movements.”
The group nodded, naturally deferring to Zhang Yi.
Baili Changqing and Wu Di took the first watch, later to be relieved by Uncle Yu and Fatty Xu.
It was easy to find an abandoned residential building outside Edo City.
Bai Chunyu arranged some preparations to block out the light, and then Deng Shentong lit up a lamp.
It was only a little past 7 PM, and the night was still long. Everyone sat together, with a heating lamp lit in the center, and began discussing the next course of action.
“The night is clearly very unsafe. Those things can sense the presence of living people.”
“The native residents of Edo City are confirmed to be alive, but some powerful Transcendent has placed a certain ability on them. It allows them to enter a state of suspended animation at night, preventing them from being attacked by the apparitions.”
“As for the night-parading hundred ghosts… for now, I can’t confirm what they really are. But they absolutely don’t seem like living beings.”
Zhang Yi rubbed his temples. As he said these words, he didn’t even know how to explain everything he had seen today.
In the past, he had encountered bizarre and strange things before.
But when it came to ghosts and gods, though he held a certain reverence, he wasn’t particularly devout.
Yet everything he had seen tonight began to shake his worldview.
Zhou Ke’er, a bit frightened, pressed closer to Zhang Yi and wrapped her arms around his. Her soft, full figure gave him a gentle, real sensation.
Some of the restlessness within him began to ease because of it.
Bai Chunyu rubbed his chin and said quietly, “Are you saying we really did see ghosts?”
Fatty Xu swallowed hard. “This… is pretty terrifying! Especially this late at night.”
He looked around at the others, desperately seeking reassurance. “Hey, hey, no one actually believes in ghosts and monsters in this world, right?”
Zhang Yi shot him a glance.
“Then can you explain the reincarnation and rebirth of the Tantric Sect?”
