I Arrived At Wizard World While Cultivating Immortality Chapter 964: Anomaly and Target
Previously on I Arrived At Wizard World While Cultivating Immortality...
By now, every wizard except the plane wizard Number One had descended here.
Jie Ming swept his gaze over them, and once he had confirmed the situation he dropped down, looking at Viola and Berta Vera Augusta, who had likewise only just returned:
“How did your exploring go?”
Viola shrugged. “I didn’t find any useful information, and I don’t seem to have found any powerful creatures either.”
Augusta answered too. “I didn’t find anything on my side either.”
Wizard Fate said directly, “First tell us what you’ve seen these past few days.”
Jie Ming didn’t keep them in suspense either, and explained what he had seen in detail.
“This plane is too big. I’ve been moving at high speed these past few days, but even now the area I’ve actually explored is still very limited. So the conclusions I’ve reached so far only speak for this one region.”
“Still, judging by the range we’ve explored, the level of civilization here really is very low. It’s basically all primitive tribes and very simple settlements, and so far I haven’t found any fully fledged transcendent civilization.”
Viola nodded. “The few races I ran into didn’t even have real cities, and the tools they used were very backward. They’re intelligent, but very weak. Even the strongest of them haven’t reached any great heights.”
Hearing this, Clark, standing to one side, frowned slightly:
“A plane this big, and hardly any powerful creatures?”
“Not that I’ve seen so far, at least,” Jie Ming answered.
After thinking for a moment, he went on to describe the peculiar things he had discovered over the past few days, leaving out everything that concerned himself:
“But from what I’ve observed, the animal populations here basically all formed from outsiders who degenerated, while the plant populations don’t seem to be like that.”
“Oh?”
At that, the others all looked at Jie Ming, and once he had confirmed it, they each began examining the plants around them.
Teacher Kastilla was the first to spot the problem. “Interesting. These plants have grown a bit too ‘standard’, haven’t they?”
Seeing everyone look her way, Teacher Kastilla explained a little. “The genetic sequences of these plants are remarkably clean. There isn’t a single redundant position in them.”
Clark looked thoughtful. “So all these plants are artificial… then there’s something seriously wrong here.”
Teacher Kastilla’s expression turned serious as well. “Exactly!”
The other wizards looked puzzled, though Wizard Fate seemed to understand what they were talking about.
Viola looked at Jie Ming, who was rubbing his chin in thought, and couldn’t help nudging him with her elbow. “Why are Teacher and the others saying that?”
Jie Ming came back to himself. “To put it simply, genetic information mutates very easily as it’s passed down. Even if these plants were artificial to begin with, after dozens of generations of natural change there ought to be a great deal of redundant mutation data.”
Understanding dawned on Viola. “Right! So that means these plants have stayed in a laboratory state all along… Hssss!!!”
The other wizards realized how serious this was, too.
Using a super-large plane as a laboratory for research, and precisely regulating every single creature in it… It was not beyond the wizard civilization, but doing so would cost what could only be called an ocean of manpower and resources.
Even assuming it was just bad luck, and only the region they had descended into was a laboratory, the danger was no less serious.
More important still was what all this implied…
If it really was a laboratory, then had they already been discovered by whoever was on the other side the moment they came in?!
Everyone present had no choice but to consider these questions.
Jie Ming, though, was thinking a little further, including about why his True-False Void-Piercing Pupil had inexplicably risen to its very highest level.
“Hm?”
Because he had kept the pupil technique running, Jie Ming noticed something interesting.
Although Wizard Fate had been somewhat surprised by the news as well, he did not seem to feel any worry.
“Makes sense. After all, he picked this place as the trial ground himself,” Jie Ming thought.
Given the nature of the fate discipline, and with Wizard Starfall to protect besides, this one would most likely put safety first.
Suddenly, the atmosphere began to shake.
A faint tremor came from deep in the sky overhead, as though something enormous were pressing in on the plane from outside.
Then the tremor rapidly intensified. Cracks visible to the naked eye began to appear across the whole sky, and a glaring dark blue light shone through them: the color of the plane wizard’s law domain.
The earth trembled and the hills swayed. The distant mountain ranges gave off a deep rumble, and shattered rock tumbled from their peaks, smashing deep pits one after another into the plain.
Every wizard looked up at once.
They all knew perfectly well that it was Number One coming in.
But its body was far too massive. Even though the opening in the plane barrier had been widened enough to admit its true body, that terrifying bulk still had a catastrophic effect as it passed through the barrier.
The spatial structure inside the plane was shaking violently. The cracks in the sky spread in every direction, the lightning grew even more savage, and the dark clouds were churned by an invisible force into a vast whirlpool.
The creatures on the ground fled in a frenzy. The plane wizard Number One had merely descended, and it had already set off a natural disaster.
Just as the plane’s tremors reached their most violent, Jie Ming suddenly frowned.
He turned to look in a certain direction, because in that direction he had sensed an extremely familiar aura…
It was the Incense Fire Poison!
It was the automatic counterattack the Mysterious Astral Mortal Dust Barrier had launched earlier, when it was broken through.
The aura was extremely faint and vanished after only an instant, but Jie Ming was certain he had not mistaken it.
At the same moment, Wizard Fate also looked in that direction.
A very faint silver light flashed in his pupils as he caught some extremely subtle fluctuation of fate.
But very soon he turned his gaze on Jie Ming instead, and a trace of astonishment he could not hide surfaced in his eyes.
This little wizard had actually become aware of the problem in that direction at the same moment he had.
Wizard Fate knew very well that he had been able to catch the fluctuation in that instant because he commanded a complete system of the Fate Law.
What was more, he had come here because he had sought this place out himself, and the causal connection between him and it made him far more sensitive to this plane’s fate than any other wizard.
But Jie Ming was only a sixth-level wizard. Even if his Spiritual Qi Law was somewhat special, he had no business standing on the same footing as Wizard Fate in this regard.
Jie Ming, however, paid no mind to any of that. In his rune vision, something was changing in that direction.
An unending stream of runes was converging on that area from every direction, as if the runes of the whole world were contracting toward it.
Seen from outside his vision, this meant the power of the entire world was converging on that area.
As Number One finished descending, the plane’s tremors gradually subsided, but the convergence of runes in that direction instead grew even more intense.
The movement of the change grew more and more obvious, and soon the wizards around him all sensed the anomaly over there.
“What is that?” Wizard Augusta was the first to speak, the eyes beneath that gray hair locked on the spot.
The other wizards turned to look as well.
Wizard Fate did not answer. Instead he looked at Number One, now fully descended, then glanced at Jie Ming, and could not hold back a laugh.
“It seems…” His voice was calm. “That must be the test subject I saw through fate.”
