I Arrived At Wizard World While Cultivating Immortality Chapter 934: Stand in the Middle, Hit Both Sides
Jie Ming sensed something was wrong the moment he opened the spatial teleport.
And when he actually arrived at the coordinates, the first thing he saw was that alien host blotting out the sky.
“Quite a turnout. No wonder the space around here is too warped to approach.”
Over a hundred eighth-level life forms hung in the void, of every different race and in every strange shape imaginable.
There were elemental creatures burning all over with dark red flame; there were insectoids clad in heavy carapace, their bodies the size of small hills; and there was a flying race with four wings apiece and lightning patterns covering their bodies.
Jie Ming took a rough count: seven different races in all, each of them giving off the terrifying aura particular to eighth-level creatures.
Behind them, several enormous spatial passages were pouring out a steady stream of further reinforcements, the runes on their surfaces flickering unsteadily; plainly they were still expanding.
Carl hung at the very front of the legion, one man facing over a hundred eighth-level aliens.
The legion Jie Ming had given him was drawn up behind him in a defensive formation, restless and uneasy.
By the look of things Carl’s name carried far and wide among the alien races, because even holding what was on the face of it an advantage in fighting strength, they had not moved rashly; they simply stood warily facing him down.
Thanks to that, the worst of it had not come about by the time Jie Ming arrived.
A brief search, and Jie Ming soon found Jack hiding behind a rock on the flank of the battlefield.
It took no thought at all to know that this particular choice of Jack’s had been Carl’s instruction.
In a war at this level, after all, Jack’s presence was nothing but a drag on the rest of them.
Seeing him arrive, Jack first let out a breath of relief, then quickly explained the situation.
“We were gathering up the surviving humans in the north-western region, and it went smoothly the whole way. But once we reached this area, we were suddenly attacked.” Jack lowered his voice, his eyes sweeping over the alien encampment in the distance.
“Luckily Mr Carl reacted fast. He held off their first wave single-handedly, and that kept things from getting any worse.”
Jie Ming found the alien races’ movements rather odd. “Before you got here, were those things hostile to one another, or working together?”
Jack thought about it for a moment, then gave his own view.
“Between themselves they look like an alliance, but during the fighting earlier they did not look as though they were truly of one mind. From what I have observed, while they were standing off against us, these things were even guarding against each other.”
“My guess is that these alien races are searching for something, and that some shared interest is the only reason they have thrown in together for the time being. Right now they are simply weeding out, by instinct, anyone else who might come to share the cake.”
Jie Ming nodded thoughtfully. “An interest, is it… What was this area originally?”
“A forbidden zone of human civilisation,” Jack said. “The strange beasts here are evolved to an extreme degree. They are strong, and densely populated too, which makes them exceedingly dangerous. As far as I know, even the Military Department was never willing to go anywhere near it. These beasts are simply too strong; ordinary firepower stopped working on them, and bringing the area to heel was more trouble than it was worth. They do not wander about at random in any case, so in the end it came down to forbidding people from entering the forest, and that was that.”
“If we are talking about what makes it worth anything, the beasts here do count as a kind of treasure in themselves… but even so, that should not be enough to draw this many powers from alien civilisations.”
While the two of them were talking, Jie Ming’s arrival had drawn the attention of everyone present.
When Jie Ming appeared, Carl and Jack had both looked toward him without thinking, and the alien races caught the movement with keen eyes.
Going by the two men’s attitude toward him, over a hundred eighth-level life forms turned their gaze on Jie Ming at once, their auras full of shock and incomprehension.
A “lower life form” as unremarkable-looking as this was actually the one directing this whole force?
Seeing them so wary, Carl slowly pulled back as well, withdrawing to Jie Ming’s side.
“The other thing that makes this area rather special is probably that there are a great many ruins here from humanity’s previous civilisation. Besides that, because the strange beasts here are evolved to such an unusual degree, researchers of human civilisation have also speculated that this may be where the mutation first began.”
At that, Jie Ming’s eyes lit up. “So that is the reason.”
He rapidly fitted together the fragments of information he had gathered earlier.
Given the state humanity was in now, it was likely that not even they themselves knew how powerful the humans of the previous civilisation had been.
So the reason the alien races had made this place their focus must be precisely that it was where the mutation had first occurred.
In other words, it was very likely the place closest to that Central World.
For Jie Ming, though, what mattered most about the place was, on the contrary, the ruins of humanity’s ancient civilisation.
They represented, after all, the accumulated knowledge of the previous human civilisation.
Just then, several strands of mental energy probed toward him.
One of them was by far the strongest, carrying a scorching heat, and it came from that race of elemental creatures burning all over with dark red flame.
“Hm? Mental fluctuations for communication?”
Jie Ming sensed at it briefly, then opened up his own mind and received their message.
“Human.” The mental fluctuations carried an undisguised arrogance. “We have observed you for a long time. You struggle to survive in this world, barely keeping the last embers alight.”
“We are willing to give you a chance. So long as you humans are willing to cooperate with us, we can give humanity a ticket into the Central World. You would gain protection, and we would gain the location of this world of yours. Both sides win.”
Hearing this so-called cooperation, Jie Ming did not declare himself at once; instead he first glanced at his magical network terminal.
Only a moment ago, he had sent out the muster message.
Wizard Augusta, Clark, Teacher Kastilla and every other wizard who happened to be free were all on their way.
Jie Ming gave a cold laugh, raised his head, and threw it straight back at them.
“You are not qualified to discuss cooperation with me.”
The fire elemental creature’s aura swelled violently, dark red flames churning fiercely in the void. “What did you say? A mere lower civilisation…”
“Lower civilisation?” Jie Ming cut it off.
This time he did not communicate by mental fluctuation; he simply let his voice carry across the whole battlefield. “You have got one thing wrong. We did not come here to cooperate with you.”
He raised a hand, and behind him the Black Giant legion and the dragonblood mushroom-man legion took a single step forward as one, loosing a war cry that shook the heavens.
“Wizard civilisation has never needed allies.” Jie Ming hovered above his legions, dark golden light circulating about him. “We came here to conquer everything. Civilisations like yours have only one identity before a wizard.”
He watched the fury and unease churning in the aliens’ auras, and slowly spoke a single word.
“Spoils of war.”
