Jie Ming and Augusta arrive at the target location to find the mushroom-men have already fled underground. Augusta uses her powers to lift the entire plateau, revealing a massive underground cavity. They discover that the mushroom-men have already retreated, leaving behind only a few low-level fighters and a colossal, newly-evolved eighth-level mushroom-man leader. Jie Ming and Augusta quickly defeat the guards, but the colossal mushroom-man leader awakens, unleashing its immense power.

Facing the surging pressure radiating from the giant mushroom-man leader below, the expressions of Jie Ming and Augusta remained oddly calm.

Augusta ignored the giant mushroom-man's words entirely and nodded to Jie Ming, an emotion she could not quite name in her voice.

“Yes. It does look as though we came a little late.”

The two of them exchanged a glance, and abruptly began to laugh at the same time.

“Heh heh… hahahahahaha!!!”

“Kekekeke!!”

Listening to the pair of them laugh, the mushroom-man leader loosed a roar of fury.

The next instant, several tentacles slammed toward the sky at once.

Facing this terrible attack, Jie Ming and Augusta moved together.

In an instant Augusta condensed a barrier of ultra-compressed rock, while Jie Ming layered several sheets of Return to Ruins Armor around the outside of it.

And yet this doubled defense, against tentacle lashes that looked utterly unremarkable, held for only a few blows before it burst apart with a roar.

Still, they took the chance it bought them and flew a little farther off, out of the tentacles' reach.

“Impressive power. Quite a bit stronger than anticipated.” In Jie Ming's eyes the silver light of the True-False Void-Piercing Pupil flickered as he analyzed the damage from that single attack.

Augusta gave a cold snort. “True enough. Measured against a 'seventh-level creature,' that is a fairly outrageous amount of fighting strength.”

But the other half of what she had said was that this giant mushroom-man's fighting strength was only worth measuring against seventh-level creatures.

Its condition was evidently still not stable enough. Its fighting strength had already surpassed the overwhelming majority of seventh-level creatures, but it had not yet reached the standard of a regular eighth-level creature.

The reason Jie Ming and Augusta had spoken of coming late was that, as they had envisioned it, the ideal moment would have been to find this mushroom-man just as it finished devouring all of its resources, but before it began the promotion process.

That way they would need only defeat a seventh-level mushroom-man, and afterward Augusta could feed it a few resources and obtain an eighth-level creature at the smallest of costs.

Judging by how these mushroom-men had been dragging their feet and how worked up they were, the two of them had calculated that there ought to be a good deal of time left.

They had not expected this leader's promotion to be quite so decisive, and it had knocked their whole calculation out from under them.

Still, they were only “a little late.”

It might have risen to the eighth level, but its condition was thoroughly unstable — as moments for a “harvest” went, this one was not bad at all.

At this point, whether because it had felt the malice in the emotions behind their wild laughter or because it had sensed the danger, the giant mushroom-man bellowed again.

“Invaders… die!!!”

As it roared, the whole of the earth shook madly.

Rumble!!!

Rock strata for tens of thousands of kilometers around rose all at once, and countless mountains tore themselves up out of the ground.

In the blink of an eye, this risen land became several thousand rocky meteors tens of kilometers in diameter.

Each of them, even as it was compressed to the extreme, was wound about with earth-element power of the utmost density.

“Die!!!”

Boom!!!

Several thousand boulders flew skyward together, like meteors falling upward.

The air ignited in an instant, and the entire world was dyed a deep crimson.

As far as the eye could see they blotted out the sky and the sun, as though the end of days had come.

Feeling the terrible force behind this single blow, Jie Ming's gaze turned serious.

He did not hesitate in the slightest. The inner world within him opened with a roar, and a spatial rift spanning heaven and earth unfurled abruptly behind him.

“Come out.”

Boom! Boom! Boom! Boom!

Four pitch-black figures tens of thousands of meters tall were the first to stride out of the spatial gateway, and the earth shook with them.

These were the only four seventh-level Black Giants under Jie Ming's command.

The moment they appeared, their chests split open into savage maws, and together they loosed a roar that shattered heaven and earth. “Roooar!!!”

Terrible waves of sound swept out in every direction.

That immense presence also drew a measure of the mushroom-man's attention onto them without its meaning to, and visibly, a portion of the flying meteors split off to come crashing down on the Black Giants.

But Jie Ming's “reinforcements” had not finished coming out.

An azure torrent came surging out of the inner world, looking for all the world like a living sea of gel.

The Nest.

After years of growth, it had at last unfolded its true form in full.

A blue body hundreds of thousands of kilometers across spread swiftly outward, like a blue planet adrift in the sky.

No sooner had the Nest emerged than countless tentacles, spore sacs and biological turrets grew rapidly across its surface, thick gelatinous ramparts stacking layer upon layer, sheltering Jie Ming and Augusta firmly at the center.

Jie Ming did not look back. He simply gave his orders, calmly.

“Black Giants, meet it head-on. The four of you rotate to take the impacts.”

“The Nest handles defense, healing and energy resupply.”

“Then I'll take flank suppression and interception, and keep it from leaving the battlefield.” Augusta smiled. “As for the main offensive, that's on you.”

“No problem. Leave it to me!”

Augusta took a step forward, and the four fundamental forces unfolded together; the four most essential powers in this world wove into a vast net that locked onto the mushroom-man leader, seeking to restrict its movement.

At the same moment, the four seventh-level Black Giants were already charging headlong into a sky full of meteors.

Boom!!

Molten Mountain roared and swung a fist to meet it. Fist met mountain, the whole meteor burst apart with a roar, and broken rock came down like a torrential rain.

The other three seventh-level Black Giants struck out with roars of their own, shattering the meteors bearing down before them.

But right on their heels, several thousand more meteors came pounding down without a break.

The four Black Giants roared and fought on, their bodies driven back step after step, the liquid skin over them splitting apart inch by inch under the pounding.

Fortunately, at that very moment the Nest raised several hundred layers of biological shielding and took the four Black Giants under its protection.

Meteor after meteor struck the gelatinous ramparts, the din unceasing, great swathes of gel bursting open and then regenerating at furious speed in an instant.

And the rubble smashed loose and sent flying filled the sky; the extreme compression had given it a terrible mass, so that even the fragments, coming down on the ground, landed like meteorites.

The entire battlefield turned, in an instant, into a purgatory of destruction.

And just then, Jie Ming had finished preparing for battle as well.

He raised a hand, and the array of Echo Shell Talisman-Rune Artifacts, with Terminus Rays interspersed among them, unfolded.

Hummm…

Several hundred runic arrays lit up at once, their radiance illuminating the whole of the sky.

Boom!!!

The Terminus Ray was first to pierce heaven and earth, its thick pillar of light tearing apart several of the mushroom-man leader's tentacles in an instant.

At the same time, several thousand Echo Shells poured down like a rainstorm.

Boom! Boom! Boom! Boom!

After one round of explosions, the rock armor that shielded the giant mushroom-man's surface had not budged in the slightest.

But Jie Ming did not mind. Under the cover of the others, he pressed the attack.

A vast quantity of energy shells turned into a barrage, pounding down on the target below in an unbroken stream.

Every shell that struck the target would, after detonating, draw in the surrounding elements and raise the elemental concentration.

As elemental particles stacked up at a furious rate, the explosive force of the Echo Shells began to climb explosively.

The entire battlefield was swallowed, for a time, in searing firelight.
