I Arrived At Wizard World While Cultivating Immortality Chapter 854: One Step Too Late

~5 minute read · 1,372 words

Once the target’s position was fixed, neither of them hesitated in the slightest.

Jie Ming worked a spatial teleport, and as space rippled faintly the two figures vanished from where they stood.

Above a desolate plateau several million kilometers from the target region, space split quietly open and the two of them stepped out.

Jie Ming did not press on at once, but opened the True-False Void-Piercing Pupil first.

Silver-white radiance turned in the depths of his pupils, taking in every fluctuation around them.

A moment later he shook his head. “No hidden traps anywhere nearby. It seems I was being overcautious.”

Augusta nodded. “You were right not to teleport straight to the target’s position. If the other side had prepared traps in advance, going in rashly would have cost even us.”

Their quick exchange finished, the two of them looked out into the distance together.

There lay a desolate, deathly still plateau.

The wind carried gray-yellow dust and sand slowly across the land, layer upon layer of bare rock strata lay exposed, and there was not the faintest sign of life.

But the more it was so, the stranger it seemed.

Whatever else was true of this plane, other life might be sparse here, but mushroom-men were genuinely everywhere.

Even outside the regions where the mushroom-men gathered, dormant mushroom-men would be scattered thinly across the ground.

And yet this region… was really rather too dead.

“It looks as though these creatures are still hiding underground after all. They do have some of the characteristics of earth-element beings.” Jie Ming turned slightly and gestured toward Augusta.

“So I’ll leave uncovering them to you. You’re better at this sort of thing, after all.”

“That’s a very odd thing to say. Surely I’m better at fighting!”

Augusta shot him a look, then took a step forward and stretched out a hand toward that distant plateau.

As Augusta’s mental energy went to work, vast gravitational and electromagnetic forces erupted together, and an invisible force field covered tens of thousands of kilometers in an instant.

Rumble…

The earth began to shake with it, and then the shaking grew more and more violent.

The plateau, silent for countless years, gave off a deafening roar.

At last, as the shaking reached some limit, fissures hundreds of meters wide split open across the ground.

These fissures spread wildly outward in every direction, crossing and recrossing, as though the whole continent were keening.

“Rise!”

Augusta gave a cold snort, and her five fingers snapped shut!

Boom!!!

Amid that deafening roar, the countless rocks and masses of earth and the very mountains of the entire plateau were bound fast by a terrible force, and then rose slowly into the air.

The sight of it was as though a god had lifted an entire continent bodily up.

Dust poured down from the broken edges in a sky-wide waterfall, and shattered rock tumbled ceaselessly away to strike the abyss below with an unbroken succession of roars.

A few breaths later, the once-massive earth had been peeled entirely away and floated high overhead, and an unimaginably vast underground cavity lay exposed before the two of them.

Looking at the scene within that cavity, Jie Ming’s brows at once drew together. “Trouble…”

Augusta looked at the situation below and could not help frowning either. “It seems we’ve come a little late after all.”

By their earlier calculations, at least several seventh-level mushroom-men should have been gathered here, along with a vast number of high-level individuals responsible for provisioning the leader.

Yet now, the entire underground world held no more than a dozen or so sixth-level mushroom-men.

Beyond that, there was only one colossus left.

It lay coiled in silence in the deepest part of the underground, its body all but filling the entire subterranean space.

Its gray-brown cap covered dozens of kilometers, as though a rocky mountain range had been overturned and set down there.

Its thick stalk was like a mountain propping up the sky, near enough filling the whole of that underground space.

Beneath the cap, tens of thousands of enormous tentacles swayed slowly, and every sweep of them raised layer upon layer of elemental storms.

But what the two of them found most troublesome was that across its rock-like body, countless dark gold law patterns flickered ceaselessly on and off.

Every flicker was accompanied by a resonance of the laws of heaven and earth.

It was as though the earth element of the entire plane pulsed slowly along with its breathing.

Augusta’s pupils contracted. “Eighth level…”

“It should have broken through only recently. Its aura isn’t stable yet, and by the look of it there weren’t quite enough resources, so its strength isn’t especially high…”

Having analyzed at length, Jie Ming still could not help grinding his teeth. “Tch! Whatever else is true, we’re one step too late! This wretched thing has left the bounds of seventh level entirely!”

At that moment, a dozen and more sixth-level mushroom-men raised their heads as one, their eyes locking fixedly onto the two figures in the sky.

A dozen and more gray-black shapes shot up together, hurtling at the two of them like so many cannon shells.

Thick tentacles lashed through the air, tearing it to shreds, and set off a string of deafening drones.

These sixth-level mushroom-men understood perfectly well that their leader had only just broken through, that its power was not yet settled, and that it must on no account be disturbed.

So even if every one of them died fighting, they had to hold off these two enemies in front of them!

“Stop them!”

A piercing mental fluctuation swept across the whole of that space.

Feeling the finality contained in that fluctuation, Jie Ming’s expression remained calm all the same. “Commendable loyalty. A pity the gap in strength is far too wide.”

His finger lifted lightly.

Sss…

Dozens of dark gold beams shot abruptly from his fingertip.

Trigram Fire Annihilation Divine Light!

Puchi! Puchi! Puchi! Puchi!

The beams punched instantly through every defense and bored through the chests of several mushroom-men, that terrible power spreading wildly through their bodies.

One after another the sixth-level mushroom-men had no time even to scream before their whole bodies were burned into ash that filled the sky.

And on the other side, Augusta did not spare them so much as a glance.

She merely closed her fist slowly, and the electromagnetic fields of heaven and earth ran wild in answer to her will.

The few remaining sixth-level mushroom-men who had been lucky enough to evade the divine light went abruptly rigid.

The countless elemental particles within their bodies lost their balance in an instant.

Boom!!!

Amid a string of explosions, the bodies of these mushroom-men actually burst apart from within of their own accord.

In the time of a single exchange, the entire guard had been wiped out by the two of them.

And yet there was not the least ease on the faces of Jie Ming and Augusta.

Because the true enemy below had begun to move as well.

Rumble…

Amid a roar like an earthquake, the colossus in the deepest part of the underground slowly opened its eyes.

The whole surface of the ground began to shudder violently.

A terrible pressure swept out in every direction like a flood or a tidal wave.

“Roooar!!!”

A deafening bellow burst out, and a shockwave visible to the naked eye spread out in an instant.

That single roar alone was enough to set off an elemental upheaval.

Hundreds of peaks around them crumbled at once, and the magma below the ground erupted furiously.

The mushroom-man leader, blotting out the sky and the sun, rose slowly to its feet, and every movement it made collapsed the earth by thousands of meters.

Countless thick tentacles reared up together like a hundred million great pythons blotting out the heavens.

“You…”

A somewhat halting mental fluctuation echoed between heaven and earth.

“Have lost… your last chance…”
