I Arrived At Wizard World While Cultivating Immortality Chapter 838: An Agreement and New Spells
The two of them went together to a quiet reception room in the Academy.
Once seated, Augusta wasted no time going around the point and came straight out with it:
“My family recently discovered a new plane.”
At that, Jie Ming’s expression stirred slightly.
For any wizard family, a new plane meant an interest vast enough to set the heart beating.
Augusta went on. “Though for the moment we have only discovered the plane’s existence. We have not even calculated the precise spatial coordinates, let alone detailed reconnaissance… but barring anything unexpected, the family should be intending to send me to explore it.”
Jie Ming nodded instinctively.
With Augusta’s combat power, the combat strength of an ordinary plane’s internal civilization genuinely could not cause her much trouble.
As for the “unexpected” she spoke of, that meant nothing other than discovering eighth-level combat strength inside the plane.
But that possibility was too low; the region where the Noren Workshop lay counted as the heartland of wizard civilization, and any plane still to be found there was a fish that had slipped the net after the ground had been plowed over and over.
The chance of eighth-level combat strength inside a plane like that was truly slim.
“So this time you are looking for me because…?” Jie Ming was beginning to grasp Augusta’s meaning.
Augusta nodded and said it straight out. “I want to hire you to help me deal with this plane.”
At that point Augusta sighed lightly, a note of helplessness in her tone. “I am not worried about high-level powers in this plane; so long as they are short of the eighth level, I can handle them.”
“But we both know that the genuinely troublesome part of conquering a plane is the vast numbers of mid- and low-level life in that world. Once war begins they come surging up like a tide, endlessly. And I… am only good at annihilation. I am not good at suppression.”
“So your family’s requirement for the plane is to preserve its native civilization as far as possible?” Jie Ming said, stroking his chin.
Augusta smiled rather helplessly. “Yes. Keep the whole plane and the civilization inside it as intact as possible; the more intact the interior, the more it is worth. My family is not as wealthy as you are.”
Hearing that, Jie Ming understood why she had come.
What Augusta genuinely needed was not someone able to defeat the enemy’s top-level powers, but an assistant able to suppress a whole civilization efficiently.
As a combat wizard, all her combat power was concentrated in herself, and she was not skilled at cultivating cannon-fodder creatures either; suppressing a civilization was indeed her weak point.
And that was precisely Jie Ming’s strength.
Jie Ming’s cannon-fodder-unit war system had long since matured and was entirely equal to these requirements.
Augusta’s gaze settled on Jie Ming:
“By the family’s calculations, there are still several decades before the plane war formally begins. In that time we will complete the last of the war preparations. When the time comes I hope you can join the fighting as my supporting force.”
“As for payment, I will try to satisfy you. Raise whatever you need.”
Jie Ming considered briefly, then nodded. “No problem. I can take part in this battle.”
For other high-level wizards, because of the mandatory rest period, every campaign was quite an important opportunity to obtain resources.
With Jie Ming’s present holdings, he did not care in the least about that “small change.”
But he was going to be spending a long time studying in any case, so the mandatory rest period made little difference to him; over all these years Jie Ming had not even gone looking for planes on his own initiative.
Of course, if this alien civilization held knowledge that interested him, so much the better.
The real reason Jie Ming was willing to agree, though, lay in the Talisman-Rune Artifact nearing completion.
Even without Augusta’s invitation, he had been intending to find a large-scale live engagement to test his research results.
Having got her answer, Augusta plainly relaxed, and the smile on her face eased considerably.
“Then it is settled.”
…
…
After the agreement with Augusta, several years passed in a flash.
On this day Jie Ming stood before the experimental bench, looking at the two Talisman-Rune Artifact substrates hanging before him, the last rune etching just completed, an expectant expression on his face.
Over these years he had finally completed the sixth-level spells he needed.
There were two sixth-level spells for use in Talisman-Rune Artifact manufacture.
The first was named the Terminus Ray. The core principle of this spell was to simulate the ultra-high-speed particle stream produced by a supernova explosion, compressing an immeasurable mass of energy into a ray no thicker than a finger and striking the target at a limit speed very nearly that of light.
Its destructive power ranked upper-middle among sixth-level spells; a single ray was enough to shatter a standard-sized planet entirely!
The second spell’s effect took an entirely different approach.
Jie Ming named it the Echo Shell.
Compared with the Terminus Ray, which pursued a killing blow, the Echo Shell’s initial destructive power was quite mediocre, slightly inferior even to an ordinary sixth-level energy bolt.
If a single Echo Shell struck a planet, at most it would burn the whole planet to glass, unable to inflict any irrecoverable damage.
But the reason the Echo Shell’s initial destructive power was so weak was that, in order to achieve its special ability, Jie Ming had slowed its explosiveness as far as he could.
The special quality of the Echo Shell was that after striking a target it would actively draw the surrounding residual elements onto the target’s surface.
The time these elements took to gather was not long, and they had no special effect; under normal circumstances they genuinely did nothing to the target under attack.
But if another Echo Shell struck the same target within that particle-gathering window, the new Echo Shell would reactivate all the previously residual elements and trigger a secondary detonation.
And the newly landed Echo Shell would itself draw still more elements together.
Which is to say, the more times the same target was struck by Echo Shells, the denser the accumulated elements, and the destructive power of each subsequent shell would climb exponentially.
In theory, so long as the same target was struck enough times in succession, the Echo Shell could finally inflict destructive power approaching that of a seventh-level spell!
And besides these two spells suited to Talisman-Rune Artifacts, on the strength of his deep exchanges with Savien and the other spatial-studies masters at the academic exchange conference, together with his own long comprehension of spatial knowledge, Jie Ming had incidentally created an entirely new spatial spell as well.
He named it the “Void String.”
The principle of this spell lay in inducing a brief fluctuation in the spatial string structure of the space the target occupied, forming a resonance section finer than the atomic scale.
Any matter or energy passing through that section would be torn apart directly at the particle level.
An ordinary spatial slash makes use of the shearing force generated when phase spaces overlap and separate.
Destructive as that method of attack is, it grows quite powerless against enemies whose energy level is too high.
For creatures above the sixth level, the vast energy converged in them robs an attack of that order of any lethal threat.
And the Void String Jie Ming created was designed specifically to counter creatures above the sixth level.
Against low-level creatures the Void String was actually less handy than an ordinary spatial slash.
Its lethal range was too short and its consumption higher; in cost-effectiveness it fell far behind a spatial slash.
But once placed in an environment of spatial confinement, or set against high-energy units, this spell’s destructive power multiplied.
Even if an ordinary sixth-level wizard raised a dedicated spatial shield, the Void String would cut straight through it.
Because the essence of the overwhelming majority of spatial shields is, in the end, still a spatial structure, and the Void String in the process of formation attaches itself to spatial structure to begin with.
So if a wizard used a spatial shield, Jie Ming using the Void String would have the man cut to pieces by his own shield.
More interesting still, the more solid the spatial confinement, the stronger the Void String’s destructive power became.
The more tightly a confinement field pressed the spatial structure together, the sharper that resonance section was honed; the two formed a positive feedback loop.
Picking up the two Talisman-Rune Artifacts etched with the Terminus Ray and the Echo Shell, Jie Ming could not wait to go and test them.
