The three high-level wizards realize that a new technique can greatly enhance wizards' promotion to the sixth level, stabilize Law Solidification Domains, and even aid seventh-level wizards in breaking through to the eighth level. The audience becomes increasingly excited as they grasp the broad applicability of this technique, which is based on the fundamental principles of cultivation.

After Jie Ming’s address ended, the storm this new result, which he had named the Life Homeostasis Field technique, raised in the outside world was a great deal more violent than he had expected.

Jie Ming himself, though, sank back into the exchange conference’s original rhythm.

He still moved between different sessions every day, pausing briefly in the exhibition area now and then, or discussing technical details in low voices with a few colleagues over the tea break.

As though that very nearly boiling upheaval of the past days had never had anything to do with him at all.

Strictly speaking, though, there was an effect in the end.

On the day he gave the report, Jie Ming uploaded the technique straight to the magical network terminal.

The growth rate of his Blood Sacrifice Method revenue share had been slowing somewhat as the market saturated, and the rate at which Jie Ming accumulated military merit had fallen off.

But after that, Jie Ming’s income abruptly soared again.

And apparently because this new technique had been watched by people from all three great powers from the very start, it was publicized more thoroughly, which drove growth in the Blood Sacrifice Method’s revenue as well.

The string of digits on the magical network terminal climbed at an outrageous speed, so fast that Jie Ming could not even be bothered to keep counting.

Beyond that, at the dinners over the following days, people’s enthusiasm toward Jie Ming plainly went up another notch.

If before it had been only those with some intent to cooperate who came up to strike a conversation, now even some eighth-level wizards would take the chance, glass in hand, to stroll over of their own accord and exchange a few words with him.

Academic exchange conferences had never made much of rigidly hierarchical rules, but before this the frequency with which an eighth-level wizard sought out a sixth-level junior for conversation had been very nearly zero.

When the last dinner broke up, Jie Ming was finally able to breathe out. He felt he had used up his entire social quota for the next several years in one go over these few days.

Taking advantage of the crowd’s inattention, Jie Ming slipped quietly around to a secluded corner at the side of the hall.

He found a single armchair hidden behind a few enormous ferns at random and dropped into it.

Jie Ming looked at the cup of tea in his hand, long since gone cold, and let out a long sigh.

“What is this? Are you tired?”

A familiar voice came from not far off.

He looked up to see Savien walking slowly over, with Bastian and Morna coming along at his side.

Bastian still held that drink of his that seemed never to run out, and the crystals at Morna’s side turned quietly in the dim light, giving off a soft glow.

“Mostly it is that I never expected them to be this enthusiastic.”

Jie Ming straightened and nodded in greeting to the three, then said with a note of self-mockery, “Honestly, before I came to the conference I had prepared for someone to trip me up behind the scenes. Whether my old technique or this new one, in the end they were bound to touch somebody’s interests…”

Savien and the other two exchanged a look and very nearly laughed together.

Having laughed, Savien waved a hand offhandedly. “Your thinking was not wrong before. There genuinely were people with that in mind, and no small number of them.”

Bastian said with a chuckle, “But… you rather underestimate our standing. If the three of us old things mean to shield a junior, those people pulled their claws back long ago. How would they dare make an open move at the conference?”

At that Jie Ming stood and bowed to the three in all seriousness.

Because the fact was exactly as they said.

Had they not been standing behind him to back him up, this exchange conference could never have gone so smoothly.

They had only taken an interest in his potential and his technique, of course, but whatever the reason, these three great figures’ promotion and protection of him were solidly and genuinely there.

Savien waved for him to dispense with the courtesy, his tone rather gentler than usual:

“You are a rare good seedling. A young man like you ought to put all his energy into study and research, realize as much of his potential as he can, and lay a few more bricks for the progress of wizard civilization. As for all the rest of that nonsense, we old fellows will naturally block it for you.”

“Yes!”

After that encouragement the three prepared to leave.

Jie Ming watched their backs go.

But a few steps on, Savien suddenly fell back a little.

At the same time, an exceedingly fine thread of mental energy reached soundlessly toward Jie Ming.

“Word came out of the public zone a couple of days ago that some treasure recording a ninth-level creature’s complete advancement was taken by a band of Multiracial Alliance people in the Broken Bone Corridor. There is a batch of old fellows very nearly gone mad, searching all over there now.”

Listening to the information the mental energy carried, Jie Ming’s heart clenched.

Fortunately his puppet body maintained its surface calm perfectly, and not even the fingertips holding his teacup trembled a fraction.

Savien, meanwhile, turned back and smiled at him, his mental energy still sending:

“Do not worry. I have already arranged for people to focus their investigation on that band of Multiracial Alliance types, and besides, you never went to the Broken Bone Corridor in the first place, did you? So there is nothing to be concerned about.”

“Still… the public zone has become disordered after all, and the roads are not peaceful. When you set out tomorrow it would be as well to take a little care.”

That said, Savien quickened his pace to catch up with Bastian and Morna, and their figures soon melted into the lamplight at the end of the corridor.

Jie Ming stood where he was, holding that long-cold cup of tea, quietly watching the three of them go until they were out of sight.

The meaning of what Savien had conveyed to him was in fact quite simple: he had steered those old fellows’ search toward that band of Multiracial Alliance types, and had taken the opportunity to nail down for him the claim that he had “never been to the Broken Bone Corridor.”

Put plainly, he had lifted Jie Ming out of suspicion as far as he could, and cleaned up after him.

Recalling Savien’s smile, so full of meaning, Jie Ming could not say for certain whether the man had confirmed that he had been to the Broken Bone Corridor, nor whether that reminder had been mere offhand goodwill or contained a deeper layer of caution.

After all, from where Jie Ming stood, that last line of his carried, however you looked at it, a certain implication hard to put into words.

At least one thing was certain, though: the man bore him no ill will.

At that thought, Jie Ming let out a slight breath.

He dared be that certain because, with the man’s standing, if he had genuinely meant to harm him he would not have needed to go so far around the houses.

“Thank you for the warning. I will take care.”

Jie Ming answered silently in his heart, with some gratitude.

Whatever else might be said, Savien’s goodwill was genuine.

He set the cold tea lightly on the low table beside the sofa and rose to head back to his room.

He was setting out to return tomorrow, and some things needed preparing in advance.
