I Arrived At Wizard World While Cultivating Immortality Chapter 772: Transmuting Life
Jie Ming raised the not-yet-finished Talisman-Rune Artifact in his hand to eye level.
A pale silver whorl of stars turned slowly in the depths of the True-False Void-Piercing Pupil, and layer upon layer of information poured out of the wizard artifact’s interior like a waterfall.
The lattice structure of the extraordinary metal, the patterns of rule left by the Law Solidification Domain’s infusion, tens of millions of energy circuits nested inside one another… all of it was taken apart and reassembled again in his field of vision.
After a moment, Jie Ming let out a light breath.
“Still not enough.”
His voice was quiet, but carried a certain helplessness.
The wizard artifact went back onto the workbench.
Though it was only one step from genuinely finished, he could already see what the final result would be.
There was still a slight energy congestion in the core rune array.
On an ordinary wizard artifact a flaw like that would be all but negligible, but for the new generation of Talisman-Rune Artifact he meant to build, it was enough to render the whole system pointless.
So this time, too, he had failed.
Jie Ming looked at the rows of neatly numbered failures on the workbench and could not help rubbing lightly at the space between his brows.
Five hundred years.
Ever since his spiritual sea had fully recovered, he had put nearly all his energy into the next generation of Talisman-Rune Artifacts.
Continually studying new knowledge, using that knowledge to work out higher elemental output schemes, and then fitting those schemes into the Talisman-Rune Artifacts. Law Solidification Domain investment technology had solved the problem of cross-plane adaptability, so by rights the new generation of Talisman-Rune Artifacts already had what it took to become the core of his combat system again.
But once he actually began the refining, Jie Ming realized the matter was far more complicated than he had imagined.
A sixth-level Talisman-Rune Artifact had to sustain three nearly contradictory requirements at once.
Higher energy density.
Stronger energy mobilization.
And more stable cross-law compatibility.
The three were bound together like three taut strings.
Adjust any one parameter even slightly and the other two fell out of balance.
Over five hundred years he had revised tens of thousands of designs, and the discarded experiment records would have filled an entire library.
But a finished product that genuinely met the requirements had never appeared.
Looking at the unfinished piece before him, Jie Ming was silent a moment, then raised both hands again.
The light of alchemy flowed slowly out of his palms and wrapped the half-finished artifact once more.
His mental energy covered the whole workbench again, and as that mental energy seeped in, the various extraordinary metals began to soften bit by bit.
The rune channels, already set, turned liquid again and flowed slowly under his mental energy’s control.
At the same time, the True-False Void-Piercing Pupil and the All-Purpose Eye opened together.
Two entirely different perspectives layered over one another until the whole wizard artifact seemed to have become a transparent world.
The thickness of every rune, the oscillation frequency of every energy circuit, even the minute deviation produced by each cycle of rules inside the Law Solidification Domain, were reflected in his consciousness with perfect clarity.
Jie Ming’s mental energy held steady without a tremor, like the finest of carving knives, correcting the internal structure bit by bit.
Time slipped past.
In the laboratory there was only the faint hum of alchemy at work, echoing on and on through the air.
Until the last rune was about to close.
And then, suddenly.
An extremely subtle sensation surfaced quietly from the depths of his consciousness: “…it could be finer still.”
Jie Ming’s hands paused slightly.
There was no basis for it, but the feeling had simply come to him.
It was not feedback from any ability. It was more as though five hundred years of failures beyond counting, of taking things apart and rebuilding them over and over, had in this moment quietly fused into a single whole.
Like a blacksmith who has swung a hammer for decades and finally knows, without measuring, exactly where this blow should land.
Jie Ming barely thought about it. His body had already moved a step ahead.
His mental energy plunged instantly into the deepest layer of the material.
Runes already refined to the limit of their own precision were adjusted again, minutely.
One stroke, two strokes, three…
The scale of the changes was almost too small to measure, and yet they were like the last feather that tips a balance.
Hmmm…
The whole wizard artifact suddenly gave off a low resonance, and the energy circuits that had been slightly sluggish abruptly ran clear.
The Law Solidification Domain, the energy-drawing runes and the high-level formula were, for the first time, genuinely joined into one complete whole.
A faint radiance flowed slowly along the patterns, as though life had begun to breathe for the first time.
Jie Ming’s pupils contracted sharply.
It had worked?!
The True-False Void-Piercing Pupil ran another full scan, and a flood of data poured into his mind.
Every core array met specification.
Energy loss down thirty-seven percent.
Output efficiency up twelve percent.
Range of external elemental absorption up twenty-five percent.
Those few improvised rune corrections had entirely resolved the bottleneck that had blocked him for five hundred years.
He slowly closed his hand around the Talisman-Rune Artifact.
Feeling that steadily circulating power inside it, a long-absent trace of a smile finally surfaced in his eyes.
But what genuinely excited him was not the wizard artifact in his hand.
It was that sensation from a moment ago.
It meant his alchemy had at last broken through again.
Jie Ming slowly closed his eyes.
Images of the road he had walked flashed through his mind.
Several thousand years of accumulation had finally carried his alchemy across the last threshold.
By the classifications in the materials he knew, at this level of alchemy there was no longer any such thing as “degree of skill.”
What determined a wizard’s level was only his own cognition, perception and control.
And alchemy at this level had already reached the point of being able to manipulate complex organic matter with ease.
Put simply, the most notable mark of alchemy at this level was… the creation of life!
The light of alchemy lit in Jie Ming’s palm once more.
The elements in the air converged rapidly, combining into the various substances he required.
Carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen…
Then those basic substances began recombining according to set proportions.
Carbon chains extended.
Amino acids bonded.
Proteins folded.
Cell membranes closed slowly…
A few minutes later, a mass of milky white tissue hung quietly in midair, writhing gently.
With Jie Ming’s current perception, he could see clearly, even without activating the All-Purpose Eye, that the cells inside the mass were dividing continuously. Which meant its metabolism was proceeding steadily.
It had no consciousness and no soul yet, but it was already living tissue in the true sense.
With a few more refined adjustments, a low-level lifeform could be born from it.
Jie Ming put it into a cultivation tank and began recording its various life parameters.
On the whole, the data was flawless.
He watched the steadily growing mass in silence, but there was not much joy in his eyes.
Because he knew this was still nowhere near the end.
With the knowledge he had now, alchemy could only produce a body.
Genuine life still lacked one last thing.
A soul.
At that thought, the corner of Jie Ming’s mouth lifted slightly.
If it came purely to understanding the interior of the soul, there were probably few in the whole Noren Workshop with more advantage than he had.
The wizard system studied the structure of the soul.
The cultivation system studied the three souls and seven spirits, the primordial spirit, the divine sense.
Two utterly different systems of knowledge, and yet in this field they complemented each other astonishingly well.
If he could genuinely fuse them…
Jie Ming looked at the living tissue in the cultivation tank.
When that day came, he would be able not only to create life, but to grant that life a genuine soul.
And that day was no longer far off.
Not only because Jie Ming had studied the relevant material before, but also because the Awakening Technique and the Temporary Enlightenment Technique he had once researched were, in large part, about understanding the soul.
“Then next… let us shift the focus of the research to souls for a while.”
