Chapter 596: A Small Psychological Technique

Jie Ming and Viola hid behind the long table, wearing knowing smiles on their faces, yet their gazes never left that direction for even a second.

Mentor Clark and the female wizard from the Crimson Court were still conversing.

Their voices were not loud, drowned out by the surrounding chatter.

However, with Jie Ming’s hearing, he could still make out the content. Although the two were not discussing anything particularly shocking, the scene itself was already spectacular enough.

“Do you think they might…” Viola lowered her voice, her eyes carrying an ambiguous look.

“Don’t guess wildly,” Jie Ming said seriously to stop her, then couldn’t help leaning closer himself. “But I think it’s possible.”

The two exchanged a glance and simultaneously showed an expression that said “you know what I mean.”

Viola picked up a drink and pretended to sip it, but the cup was raised too high, covering half her face and leaving only a pair of sneaky, darting eyes. Jie Ming held a plate of fruit, stuffing pieces into his mouth while frantically scanning with his peripheral vision.

“Did you notice? Mentor changed his outfit again at some point,” Jie Ming quietly transmitted through spiritual power. “That robe, that hairstyle, that face… He usually can’t even be bothered to shave, but today he cleaned up so neatly.”

“There’s definitely something going on,” Viola declared firmly.

“Ironclad evidence,” Jie Ming agreed.

Just as the two were getting into it, Jie Ming suddenly felt a chill on his back.

It was the instinctive warning from his body forging method—danger was approaching.

He subconsciously turned his head…

At some point, Clark had turned around and was now staring at them with an expressionless face.

Those eyes were calm like a pool of still water, but Jie Ming clearly read the words “you two are tired of living” within them.

“Run!” Viola reacted faster than him. The spiritual message had barely transmitted before she had already dashed three steps away.

But Clark was faster.

Jie Ming didn’t even see how he moved. He only felt a blur before something grabbed his collar.

The next second, he and Viola were like two chicks being lifted, dragged in front of Clark by an invisible force.

“Mentor, we didn’t see anything!” Viola spoke first, her voice overly sincere.

“Right, we were just passing by!” Jie Ming immediately followed up. “The scenery here is quite nice!”

Clark did not speak.

He simply looked at the two of them and slowly raised his right hand.

Jie Ming’s face turned green.

The next dozens of seconds were an experience Jie Ming least wanted to recall in his life.

Clark’s punches were not heavy. Each one precisely avoided vital points and seemed to cause no real damage, but they hurt terribly. Jie Ming tried to resist with his body forging method, yet Clark’s fists seemed to penetrate all defenses and act directly on his nerve endings.

Viola fared even worse.

Her stealth techniques were completely useless in this close-range brawl. She was pinned down by one of Clark’s hands while the other rained blows on her head.

“Mentor, I was wrong! I was really wrong!” Viola’s voice cracked.

“Mm, I know you were wrong,” Clark said calmly, his hands never stopping.

Jie Ming squatted on the ground hugging his head, feeling that his face had already swollen up.

Just as he thought he might not make it out today, a female voice came from the side, carrying a trace of helplessness and amusement.

“Clark, that’s enough.”

Clark’s fist paused in mid-air.

Jie Ming peeked through his fingers. The female wizard from the Crimson Court was walking over.

She stood beside Clark, one hand resting naturally and intimately on his arm.

“They’re just two kids. Is it really necessary?” She glared at Clark.

Clark withdrew his fist and said indifferently, “They were too noisy.”

Jie Ming and Viola both breathed a sigh of relief.

“Get up,” she said, looking down at the two squatting on the ground with a smile on her lips.

Those dark red eyes carried none of the oppressive pressure of a seventh-ring wizard. Instead, they held a gentleness that made one unconsciously relax.

Jie Ming and Viola stood up sheepishly.

Jie Ming touched his swollen eye socket and sucked in a breath of cold air.

Viola looked even worse, with a bruise on the bridge of her nose.

The female wizard looked at their sorry state and couldn’t help laughing out loud. Her laughter was bright and hearty, completely at odds with the brutal, bloody aura she carried.

“I am Kastilla,” she extended her hand, first shaking with Viola, then turning to Jie Ming. “You’re also Clark’s student? Not bad. A fifth-ring wizard who can stand here is already stronger than he was back then.”

Jie Ming was stunned for a moment and subconsciously glanced at Clark.

Clark stood to the side with an expressionless face, pretending to admire the distant scenery.

“Senior Kastilla,” Jie Ming quickly saluted.

“Don’t call me Senior. Just use my name,” Kastilla waved her hand, her tone casual as if chatting. “I have a long history with your mentor.”

Jie Ming and Viola exchanged a glance. The same thought flashed through both their minds at once: Long history? This is clearly an old flame!

Kastilla seemed to see through their thoughts and did not avoid the topic. She said openly and generously, “Back then, Clark and I studied together. Later, I chose the path of the Crimson Court, so we separated.”

She spoke lightly, but Jie Ming could hear the weight behind her words.

Choosing the Crimson Court meant leaving Noren Workshop, even leaving the Star Ring Federation, abandoning a familiar system to start from scratch in a completely unfamiliar faction.

That path was not easy, yet she had still chosen it.

“Why did you choose the Crimson Court?” Viola couldn’t help asking.

Kastilla smiled. A sharp glint flashed in her eyes. “Because the path of the Flesh Mother Nest suits me better. The alchemy of Noren Workshop is too conservative. What I want is ultimate life modification, evolution that transcends limits.”

She paused and looked at Clark, her tone softening slightly. “He understood. So he didn’t stop me.”

Jie Ming fell silent.

He suddenly understood that the relationship between these two was not some sticky, mushy romance, but a deeper level of understanding—I know the path you want to walk, I won’t stop you, but I will wait for you here.

Kastilla withdrew her gaze and looked at Jie Ming and Viola, a hint of slyness in her eyes. “Did you two enjoy peeking today?”

Jie Ming and Viola froze at the same time.

“I’ll deal with you two when we get back,” Clark’s voice drifted over from the side, as casual as if he were commenting on the nice weather.

Jie Ming felt his face start hurting again.

Kastilla shook her head with a smile, then suddenly reached out and wrapped her arm around Clark’s waist.

The action was straightforward and clean, without the slightest hesitation. Clark’s body stiffened slightly, but he did not dodge.

“Come on, let’s go chat over there,” Kastilla said, her tone carrying an overbearing quality that brooked no refusal.

Clark frowned. “Here is fine.”

“It’s too noisy here.”

Kastilla gave him no chance to refuse. She half-pulled, half-dragged him toward the side of the banquet hall, where there were fully enclosed rooms specially designed for wizards engaging in academic exchange.

“Come on, let me take a good look at you!”

Clark was dragged a few steps by her. He turned back and glanced at Jie Ming and Viola.

Jie Ming and Viola stood in place, watching the two figures disappear through the side door of the banquet hall.

Kastilla walked with complete openness, one arm never leaving Clark’s waist, showing no intention of letting go.

Clark was led along by her, his steps somewhat reluctant, but he did not truly struggle.

The side door closed, and the two vanished from sight.

Jie Ming and Viola exchanged a glance and simultaneously let out a long breath.

“Does it hurt?” Viola asked.

“It hurts,” Jie Ming touched his eye socket. “What about you?”

“Even more,” Viola rubbed the bridge of her nose, then suddenly smiled. “But from the perspective of equivalent exchange, it was worth it.”

Jie Ming also smiled.

He turned to look at the tightly closed side door and suddenly felt a wave of emotion. “Do you think Mentor will thank us later?”

Viola squatted casually beside Jie Ming, rubbing her bruised nose. “For anything else, I’d say Mentor would definitely see through it, but in this area… I’m really not sure.”

That was right. The two of them were proper wizards after all. How could they have gone to such lengths purely for gossip?

…Although there had been an element of wanting to watch the show.

But when they saw how slightly unnatural Mentor Clark and Wizard Kastilla were with each other, the two of them had decisively put on this little act.

After not seeing each other for so long, there would naturally be some emotional distance.

But at a time like this, all it took was a small matter they could participate in together to quickly erase that slight sense of unfamiliarity.

Jie Ming withdrew his gaze and picked up the drink on the table that he had not finished.

It tasted sweet and refreshing, with a slight coolness, slightly different from before.

“Let’s go,” he said. “Time to go back and eat.”

Viola nodded and followed him back to the long table.

The banquet continued. Beneath the magnificent golden dome, countless wizards conversed, raised their glasses, and enjoyed this rare gathering.
