Instantly, the Team Leader realized something had gone awry, from the initial crack to the creature's abrupt change in behavior. However, his reaction was swift and controlled.
With his focus locked onto the entity before him, he retreated several paces before extending his hand. Simultaneously, his node activated.
Upon activation, his vision intensified, his eyesight becoming more acute as he meticulously tracked every twitch and began to anticipate the creature's trajectory.
The instant he pinpointed its movement, he reached out to seize it. Yet, just as his hand descended, its body emitted a sharp crack, its limbs contorting in unnatural ways as it evaded him, slipping to the left.
"Ah?"
The Team Leader's eyebrows rose as he kept his eyes fixed on the creature, its form cracking once more before it leaped towards the adjacent wall, commencing its ascent. He continued to monitor the entity, ensuring it remained within his line of sight.
This was peculiar...
'What precisely occurred? This deviates from anything that was supposed to manifest. In fact, what even is this anomaly?'
He was acutely aware of the anomalies being generated, and this particular one differed significantly from his initial designs. Its divergence was so profound that it left him entirely bewildered. To further complicate matters, the creature made no aggressive move towards him, instead circling him warily as if observing.
"Is it afraid of me...? What is happening here?"
The Team Leader did not pursue, but he found himself thoroughly perplexed by the unfolding events. From the Cedrick incident to this current circumstance... the progression of affairs was veering drastically from his original blueprints.
Scratch. Scratch. Before he could fully process it, the Team Leader's hand instinctively moved to scratch the side of his neck.
"I do not like this. I do not like this at all."
It felt as though control was seeping away. He detested such a sensation. As a Game Operator, relinquishing control was the ultimate failure. Despite the growing unease, he compelled himself to maintain composure.
Reaching into his pocket, he withdrew a small mechanical mouse toy with a metal winding mechanism at its rear. Grasping it firmly, he turned the mechanism a few times before releasing the toy onto the floor. Its eyes flickered to life, glowing red, and in the following moment, it propelled itself forward.
The Team Leader followed the darting mouse, his gaze methodically scanning the environment.
He absorbed every minute detail surrounding him, ensuring nothing escaped his notice.
With everything appearing to slip beyond his command, he recognized that something was amiss. However... he couldn't quite pinpoint the source of the disruption.
As he navigated the corridors, the overhead lights seemed to cast a dimmer glow than usual. This subtle alteration felt significant. His eyes swept across the area, eventually settling on the nearby rooms.
The profound silence seemed to intensify, until...
Thump! Thump!He heard it.
A series of dull, rhythmic thumping sounds emanated from within each room. Initially faint and somewhat muffled, they progressively intensified, becoming clearer with each passing moment.
Without hesitation, the Team Leader approached the nearest door. He pressed himself against the wall, the low ambient hum of the surroundings enveloping him.
Thump. Thump. The sound pierced the quiet, growing stronger second by second.
Reaching into his pocket once more, he retrieved a dark leather glove and donned it.
THUMP! THUMP!The thumping escalated, seemingly imminent as the Team Leader remained still, eyes closed, waiting silently.
THUMP!He waited.
And continued to wait...
And then—
CLANK!The door burst inwards violently. The Team Leader reacted instantly, his hand reaching for the approaching anomaly. Concurrently, his node churned intensely as he prepared to assert temporary dominion over the entity.
But the moment he moved—
"——!?"
He was astonished to find himself utterly alone. The room beyond lay empty, the candles extinguished, leaving behind a pervasive, heavy metallic aroma. This scent lingered as smoke began to unfurl from within the room, drifting languidly into the corridor. It coiled through the air in thin, delicate tendrils, inscribing faint patterns as it diffused.
Scratch! Scratch! Scratch!By this point, the Team Leader could no longer resist the urge; his hand rose to scratch the side of his neck.
"Just what in the world is transpiring? Who is interfering with my operations? Did I err somewhere? How is this conceivable? This should not be happening... It truly should not be."
Gnawing at his nails, he scanned his surroundings for any indication, any clue.
Suddenly, a thought surfaced.
Could it be them...?
Scratch! Scratch! His complexion visibly drained of color.
'No, but that shouldn't be possible! They should barely have any knowledge of me! Is it because I took action against him...? Is this why they have suddenly begun to target me?'
"No, no, no."
Lowering his hand, the Team Leader surveyed the area.
His gaze swept across the surrounding chambers, a subtle, muffled thudding beginning to permeate the air, each beat resonating in time with his own racing heart. Faced with the current circumstances, a singular, urgent thought dominated his mind.
’I have to escape this place. If it’s ’them’, I need to flee immediately!’
Without the slightest hesitation, he quickened his steps. A churning sensation gripped his stomach as he moved, his eyes frantically scanning his environment, seeking any hint of something out of the ordinary.
If only he could find it...
"Damn it."
Yet, the area appeared completely devoid of any life. To exacerbate his predicament, as he sprinted down the corridor, a chilling realization soon dawned upon him: his escape was futile. Through the dimly lit passage, he continued to run, and run, until the grim truth settled in – he was merely ensnared in a repetitive loop.
Scratch! Scratch! Scratch!
He spun around in a panic, his self-control fraying at the edges. A sense of losing grip washed over him as perspiration trickled down his temples. He had yet to encounter any direct threat, but it felt as though an unseen entity was extending its reach, poised to seize him at any moment.
His breaths grew ragged, his face losing more color as the muffled drumming from the rooms behind him intensified, creeping closer.
THUMP! THUMP!
In a twisted sense, it was almost as if the entities were toying with him.
Then—
BANG!
The instant a door violently swung open, nothing emerged. Instead, he was confronted by an empty chamber; the numerous candles adorning the space had long since been extinguished, leaving the stale aroma of burnt wax lingering heavily in the atmosphere.
’Nothing. Once more, there is absolutely nothing.’
With a slight adjustment of his glove, the Team Leader resumed his meticulous survey of the room from floor to ceiling, confirming the absolute absence of anything within. The more he discovered missing, the more pronounced his breathing became, a quiet swallow preceding his turn away.
It was precisely at that juncture that he detected it.
"....?"
A soft, almost enchanting melody drifted through the air. It sounded akin to a violin, yet it was played at an unnaturally high pitch, its notes slender as they sliced through the atmosphere, drawing his thoughts into a daze.
The Team Leader froze abruptly, a subtle alteration in his expression as an unfamiliar sensation prickled within his chest.
His feeling of disquiet intensified considerably.
