"How could this have occurred?"
The Team Leader dropped to his knees, ripples spreading outward as his movement disturbed the dark liquid that pooled on the ground. His eyes meticulously surveyed the symbols drawn on the floor, absorbing their details in quiet contemplation. By all indications, the ritual should have been flawless, yet an unsettling dissonance permeated the air.
But where did it falter?
A deeper frown creased the Team Leader's brow as he ran a finger along the floor, the surrounding candles flickering erratically, their faint light casting dancing shadows. The atmosphere in the chamber grew noticeably heavier, a palpable shift in the oppressive stillness.
The Team Leader's frown intensified as the anomaly became apparent.
"Something is not right."
Extending his hand, he registered a distinct drop in temperature, several degrees colder. Despite maintaining his outward composure, a subtle unease gnawed at him as he scanned the chamber, his gaze eventually returning to the imposing, ancient wooden door.
His mind replayed the moments immediately preceding the catastrophic event involving Cedrick.
A low thudding sound had reached his ears. Could it be connected?
The Team Leader began to move silently towards the door, a specific thought crystallizing in his consciousness, "Could it be him...?"
The thought lingered, and he pursed his lips.
"That’s impossible. Based on my interaction with that anomaly, he wasn't scheduled to arrive until tomorrow. His compass indicated the correct path. Did he alter his plans?"
The Team Leader could not simply dismiss the possibility. It was a valid concern, and his expression briefly hardened before his characteristic calm reasserted itself.
"Even if he arrived ahead of schedule, I have taken sufficient precautions to guarantee he will not escape this alive. Once he is dealt with, I will claim the Lesser Key from him."
Closing his eyes, the Team Leader lowered his head, his gaze fixed on the pooling blood. His eyes flickered downward to his attire, noting the spread of dark crimson stains. A slight tremor ran through his eyelid, and his hand instinctively moved towards his neck, halting just before contact as he forced himself to remain still.
Drawing a deep, steadying breath, he reached for the old, corroded doorknob and turned it, pulling the door open. A lengthy, narrow hallway stretched out into the gloom in both directions, the sparse, flickering lights overhead offering little illumination. Doors, weathered and faded, lined the walls on either side, disappearing into the dimness.
Exiting the room, the Team Leader paused, his eyes sweeping across both sides of the corridor, his gaze sharpening.
’If there truly was an intruder, I should have sensed their presence by now. Yet, it appears no one else is present besides myself.’
Reaching into his pocket, the Team Leader retrieved a small pocket watch. Its steady, resonant ticking filled the corridor as he closed his hand around it, the sound echoing softly in the confined space.
Tick! Tick—!
The ticking intensified as he continued to hold the pocket watch, gradually accelerating until it became the sole sound audible, overpowering all other ambient noise. This continued for several minutes before abruptly ceasing.
At the cessation of the sound, the Team Leader slowly opened his palm, his gaze descending to the pocket watch as he observed its current position.
But—
"Nothing...?"
Both hands of the watch had frozen, immobile at the midnight hour, 0:00 a.m.
There was no one in the vicinity.
Having expended a significant amount of SP over time and utilized it in various situations, the Team Leader felt confident that no other human presences were nearby. Nevertheless, he couldn't entirely rely on this assessment. Every tool possessed its own set of limitations and potential side effects; absolute reliability was an illusion.
"I am certain I did not imagine those sounds. Is it possible the noise originated from a distance? Could other Guilds have reached this location? Did they discover I had Cedrick and tracked me here?"
His brow furrowed in a tight knot of concern.
The profound silence surrounding him felt deafening.
"...Given that I orchestrated this entire operation, unless it was the Guild Master of the Reverence Cloud Guild himself, I should be the sole individual aware of Cedrick's date of birth and astrological sign. No... there is also the BUA agent, but I have taken measures to neutralize that threat. Could this have been a trap from the very beginning?"
The Team Leader reached into his pocket once more and tossed a small orb into the air. It emitted a soft glow as it hovered, its surface shimmering and reforming until it displayed the image of a fortified compound. He observed it for a moment, then gave a slight nod.
"Yes, everyone remains in position."
He reached out and caught the descending orb, the image vanishing the instant his fingers closed around it. It wasn't Seth, nor was it anyone associated with the various guilds."
Then, what was the issue?
Tucking the orb away, the Team Leader moved towards a nearby doorway and pushed it open. The moment the door creaked ajar, a scene eerily familiar greeted him. A potent, metallic scent of blood saturated the air, so strong it would likely cause most to flinch. Within the room, a figure lay prone in the center, their body convulsing and heaving, their breaths shallow and ragged as blood flowed outwards, staining the floor in a widening expanse.
The candles flickered with renewed intensity, casting an array of shifting, distorted shadows throughout the entire chamber.
A cacophony of loud cracking noises echoed throughout the chamber as the subject's body contorted unnaturally, bones audibly snapping and shifting beneath the skin. Frame after frame, the body twisted, a grotesque spectacle enough to disturb the most hardened observer.
No cries of pain were uttered. As the Team Leader's gaze surveyed the confined space, the violent tremors abruptly ceased.
"—!"
The Team Leader's eyebrows drew together, a prickle of unease commencing as he fixed his stare upon the monstrous entity. A suffocating silence enveloped the surroundings. Taking a solitary step forward, the sound reverberated, causing the candles to cease their frantic flickering and settle into a steady, dim glow.
Suddenly, the atmosphere chilled, and the creature underwent a subtle twitch.
Twitch. Twitch.
The Team Leader paused, not once, but twice. A profound feeling of suffocation dominated the room as the candles flickered precariously before extinguishing completely, immersing the entire area in absolute darkness.
Yet, amidst the silence, a sound persisted.
Twitch. Twitch. Twitch.
The consistent, rhythmic twitching emanated from the figure positioned before him. It intensified, growing more frantic, until it merged with the sharp, metallic clang of chains. The sound reverberated through the room, piercing and intensely jarring, filling every recess as the Team Leader remained utterly motionless.
CLANK! CLANK—!
The rattling persisted, gaining strength with each passing second.
The Team Leader sensed the strain on the chair as a low, muffled cracking sound permeated the room. It became undeniably evident that something had gone critically awry. He took a step back, but the instant he did, a sharp, splintering noise erupted as a hard object struck his foot before skittering across the floor.
"——!"
In the aftermath, a complete silence descended upon the room, a heavy oppression settling into the oppressive darkness. Within that profound stillness, the Team Leader detected it... a faint, undeniable exhalation that was not his own, signaling the presence of another entity within the chamber.
Maintaining his composure, he stepped backward, his hand descending to secure a small piece of paper before propelling it forward. The moment it left his grasp, the surrounding gloom began to dissipate, and a solitary silhouette materialized within his line of sight.
It stood at a mere short distance, its gaze fixed directly upon him. The sound of its breathing intensified in the darkness, its focus solely on him.
The Team Leader's expression faltered upon witnessing the sight, his heart plummeting as a sharp cracking sound echoed through the room. The figure convulsed abruptly, its head snapping backward while its arms and limbs contorted violently at grotesque angles.
Cra Crack! Cra Crack!
And then... It surged towards him, traversing the intervening space in an instant.
