Bella is overcome with grief after her grandfather's sudden passing, struggling to accept his death and the silence he left behind. The family holds a respectful funeral, with many remembering William's kindness and generosity. As the household mourns, Bella withdraws into a quiet numbness, finding solace only in Leo's presence amidst the pervasive sadness.

Miss J found her there one afternoon, sitting on the same bench beneath the tree, her hands resting limply in her lap.

The sunlight filtered through the leaves, casting soft, dappled shadows across her face. She looked lost in thought, her gaze fixed on something far away.

Without saying a word, Miss J walked over and sat beside her.

After a long moment, she gently pulled Bella into a hug.

"It’s okay, sweet girl... it’s okay," she whispered, slowly rubbing her back.

Bella remained still for a while. She didn’t pull away.

Finally, she nodded against Miss J’s shoulder.

Miss J took a quiet breath before continuing, choosing her words carefully. She knew that grief was fragile. She knew that saying the wrong thing could make it worse. So she spoke slowly and gently.

"You need to slowly accept his death, Bella. I know it’s hard. I know it feels impossible right now, but he finally got his peace."

Bella looked up at her, her eyes glassy.

"He had been struggling with his health for the last few years. He was tired, sweetheart. He fought for a long time."

She gently cupped Bella’s cheek.

"His body was weak. His heart was tired. But his spirit..." She smiled softly. "His spirit never stopped loving you."

Bella’s eyes glistened.

Miss J gently wiped a tear from her cheek.

"Maybe now he’s finally free from all that pain. Maybe he’s somewhere peaceful, meeting the people he lost along the way."

Bella stared at her with misty eyes.

"Like..." Miss J hesitated for a moment, then gave her a small, comforting smile. "Like your father."

Bella’s lips parted slightly. Her eyes widened with a mixture of sadness and hope.

"Really?" she asked softly.

Miss J nodded.

"Maybe."

Bella looked down at her hands. Her fingers were clasped tightly together, as though she was holding onto something she was afraid to let go.

The thought was strangely comforting.

She couldn’t know what happened after death. Nobody could. She had spent so many nights wondering, questioning, searching for answers that never came. But the idea of her grandfather finally at peace, no longer struggling to breathe or fighting against pain and perhaps meeting the people he had missed for years, made her chest feel a little less heavy.

She imagined him walking through a golden field with a smile on his face. She imagined him reaching out to her father and other people.

"And maybe," Miss J continued gently, "he’s telling your father that you’ve grown into such a beautiful girl."

Bella’s eyes filled with tears again.

This time, however, a tiny smile appeared on her lips.

"You think so?"

"I know so."

Miss J hugged her a little tighter, pulling her close.

"And if they’re together somewhere, I’m sure they’re both watching over you. Every single day. Every single moment. They’re proud of you, Bella. They’ve always been proud of you."

Bella closed her eyes and rested her head against Miss J’s shoulder. Her breathing slowed and the tension in her body began to ease.

"I miss him," she whispered.

"I know, sweet girl." Miss J pressed a kiss to the top of her head. "I know."

"I don’t think I’ll ever stop missing him."

"And you don’t have to." Miss J’s voice was soft and steady. "Missing someone is just another way of loving them. It means they mattered. It means they still matter."

Bella nodded slowly as she kept hugging her for a long time.

Today was the day William’s lawyer was going to announce his final will.

Bella honestly didn’t care much about what William had left for her. She already had more than enough in her life and no amount of money, property, or inheritance could make her feel better about losing him.

If anything, she wished she could trade every single thing written in that will for one more evening with her grandfather, sitting beside him while he told his childhood stories, laughing at his jokes, and listening to his voice one last time.

Still, the family had been asked to gather for dinner at William’s old mansion, because the lawyer wanted everyone present before the will was formally read. The request had come through William’s legal team, formal and polite but the underlying message was clear:

When Bella entered the dining room with Leo beside her, she immediately noticed the atmosphere was different.

Her three cousins were already there.

Jacob, the eldest grandson, sat at one end of the table. He was dressed in an expensive black suit, his posture straight and his expression serious. His hair was neatly combed back, and his hands rested on the table in a way that suggested control and authority.

Roman, the second grandson, sat beside him, equally well-dressed, his sharp eyes moving toward Bella the moment she entered. He was leaner than Jacob, with a calculating gaze that never seemed to rest. He had always been the quietest of the three, but that silence made him more dangerous.

And Ashton, the youngest, looked comparatively relaxed, but even he couldn’t hide the tension in his face. He was dressed in a dark grey suit, his posture casual but his eyes flickering with unease. He was the least aggressive of the three but he was still a part of them.

All three of them looked at Bella.

Not like family.

Like she was a threat.

Bella noticed their expressions but didn’t react. She had expected this. She had known, even before walking through the door, that they would see her as competition. They had never considered her a real part of the family. To them, she was an outsider who had somehow slipped into their grandfather’s heart.

She was wearing a simple outfit, nothing extravagant: a soft cream-colored blouse and tailored black trousers. There was no jewelry apart from the small pieces she normally wore, a delicate necklace Leo had given her and a simple bracelet. She had no interest in making an impression tonight.

Leo walked beside her calmly, one hand resting lightly against her back.

He noticed the three men’s expressions immediately.

His eyes became slightly colder.

He had no intention of leaving Bella alone in a room with them. He knew exactly what they were thinking.

And, just in case the evening became unpleasant, he had brought his own lawyer as well, a quiet, sharp-eyed man who sat discreetly near the back of the room, observing everything without drawing attention to himself.

The Moretti family had dealt with enough surprises over the years. Leo wasn’t going to allow Bella to face another one unprepared.

He gently pulled the chair out for her.

"Sit."

She gave him a small smile.

"Thank you."
