"...For me?"
Leo nodded once.
Bella’s cheeks flushed. She hugged the bunny instinctively, her fingers sinking into its impossibly soft fur. "Leo..." she whispered, her voice barely audible. "I’m not a child anymore." She glanced around shyly, as though someone might be watching. "Only little kids... and teenage girls... buy stuffed toys."
Leo looked at her with his usual calm expression. "So?"
Bella became speechless. She opened her mouth, then closed it. Then opened it again.
"So..." she mumbled, looking down at the bunny. "I’m already married."
Leo gently placed the pink bunny into her arms, his fingers brushing against hers. "I know."
Bella hugged it instinctively before realizing what she had done. Her cheeks became even redder. "I-I was just holding it..."
Leo’s lips curved into a faint smile. "I bought it for you. You don’t need an excuse."
Bella looked down at the plush toy. It was unbelievably soft. She secretly rubbed its little ear with her thumb, a small, shy smile spreading across her face.
"...It’s cute."
"I know," Leo answered.
Bella looked up innocently. "...The plushie?"
Leo quietly looked into her eyes. "No. You."
Bella froze. Her entire face turned bright red. "Leo!"
He let out a low chuckle, clearly satisfied with her reaction.
Bella buried half of her face behind the pink bunny, too embarrassed to look at him. The tips of her ears were glowing.
A sales assistant nearby watched the interaction with a smile, leaning toward her coworker. "They really suit each other."
Her coworker nodded. "The husband looks so serious... but he keeps buying her the cutest things."
Bella secretly peeked at Leo from behind the plushie. "...Thank you," she whispered.
Leo gently adjusted one of the bunny’s floppy ears before brushing a strand of hair away from Bella’s face. "If seeing a stuffed toy makes you smile... then you’re never too old for one."
Bella hugged the pink bunny tighter against her chest. Her heart felt warm, so full it might burst.
As they walked out of the store hand in hand, Bella carried the pink bunny in one arm while holding Leo’s hand with the other. She couldn’t stop smiling. Her steps were light, almost bouncing.
Leo glanced at her. "...Happy?"
Bella nodded enthusiastically. "Mhm." Then she looked at the bunny and smiled shyly. "I think... Moonbeam, Dorabella, Berry, and the others have a new friend now."
Leo looked at the pink plushie. After a brief silence, he said seriously, "...We’ll need a bigger bed."
Bella blinked. Then burst into laughter as she hugged his arm.
---
By the time they returned to the Moretti mansion, the sky had already begun turning shades of orange and pink.
Bella was still carrying the soft pink bunny Leo had bought for her, hugging it against her chest as they stepped inside.
The moment she entered the living room, she stopped.
"...Miss J?"
Miss J, who had been waiting quietly on the sofa, immediately stood up. A beautifully wrapped gift bag rested beside her, tied with an elegant cream ribbon. Her dress was simple but elegant, her hair neatly styled, and her eyes soft with anticipation.
The moment she saw Bella, a warm smile spread across her face. "Bella."
She walked over without hesitation and gently embraced her.
Bella instinctively returned the hug. For some reason, being held by Miss J felt comforting and warm. It felt like coming home to a place she had never known but had always been searching for.
Bella slowly tightened her arms around her before unconsciously biting her lower lip.
She wanted to say it. The word sitting at the edge of her tongue.
...Mom.
But... she couldn’t. Not yet. It wasn’t because she didn’t want to. Her heart simply wasn’t ready.
She slowly pulled away, looking a little guilty.
"...Miss J..."
For the briefest moment, a flicker of disappointment crossed Miss J’s eyes. It disappeared almost instantly, replaced by her usual gentle smile.
She wasn’t hurt. She understood. Some relationships couldn’t be rebuilt in a single day.
She was willing to wait. No matter how long it took.
"I made something for you." She lifted the beautifully packaged bag and handed it to Bella.
Bella looked at it curiously. "For me?"
"For both of you." Miss J smiled warmly. "I baked a cake." Her gaze moved between Bella and Leo, her eyes filled with affection. "For my daughter..." Then she looked at Leo. "...And my son-in-law."
Leo raised an eyebrow ever so slightly. Son-in-law. The title sounded... surprisingly natural. He looked at Miss J for a second before giving a small nod of acknowledgment.
"...Thank you."
Miss J smiled even more brightly. "I’m glad you accepted it."
Bella carefully opened the bag and gasped softly. Inside was a beautifully decorated strawberry cake with delicate pink cream, tiny edible flowers, and elegant chocolate writing across the top.
She looked up, her eyes shining. "...You made this yourself?"
Miss J nodded proudly. "I did. I wasn’t sure what flavor you both liked... so I chose strawberry."
Bella smiled warmly. "It’s beautiful."
Miss J looked at her with gentle eyes. "I hope..." She hesitated for just a moment. "...I hope you’ll like it."
Bella’s heart softened. She stepped forward and gave Miss J another gentle hug. "...Thank you."
Although the word she truly wanted to say still refused to leave her lips, that simple hug was enough to make Miss J’s eyes quietly mist over. She smiled through the emotion, gently patting Bella’s back.
"It’s alright..." she whispered to herself. "We have plenty of time."
Bella quietly sat beside Miss J on the couch, still holding her little pink bunny against her chest.
Before Bella could even reach for the cake box, Miss J naturally stood up.
"I’ll be right back."
Bella watched her in a daze as she walked into the kitchen as though she had done it a hundred times before.
A few minutes later, she returned carrying two small plates, dessert forks, napkins, and two glasses of fresh juice neatly arranged on a tray.
She carefully placed everything on the coffee table before cutting the strawberry cake into equal slices.
"Here."
Miss J gently slid one plate toward Bella.
"Have some."
Bella obediently nodded. "...Okay."
She picked up the little fork and took a small bite.
The soft sponge melted in her mouth, followed by the sweetness of fresh strawberries and light cream.
Her eyes unconsciously widened.
"...It’s delicious."
Miss J smiled, her eyes curving gently. "I’m glad you like it."
