~4 minute read · 1,093 words

Mu Lan stirred from her nap in the resting room, finding herself back in bed upon waking. After a moment of rubbing her eyes, she cautiously opened the door. Peeking out, she saw Mu Liang engrossed in his work within his office. The room was otherwise empty.

Creeping silently, Mu Lan approached him from behind and embraced him.

Mu Liang, having already noticed her reflection on his laptop screen, gently took her arms and turned to face her. He bestowed a kiss upon her right cheek before inquiring, "Is your body feeling alright?"

Mu Lan responded with a pout, "I specifically asked you to be gentle."

"I was. Had I not been, we would have done more than just once," he retorted, his gaze scrutinizing her carefully. "Are you truly feeling okay?" He noted her unusual demureness, a stark contrast to her previous entreaties, which stirred a sense of unease within him.

Mu Lan nuzzled her face against his chest, her voice slightly strained as she revealed, "You see… I'm pregnant."

Mu Liang leaped from his chair, exclaiming, "What?!" His eyes widened in disbelief, struggling to accept what he had heard. He grasped her shoulders, demanding, "How is that even possible?" He was certain he had administered her medicine after each intimate encounter, leaving no room for such an outcome.

Mu Lan explained softly, "I switched the medicine behind your back. I'm already two months along. You haven't noticed until now because my morning sickness has been delayed."

A recollection of her near-fatal ordeal flashed through Mu Liang's mind, her cries echoing with chilling clarity. The thought of her enduring such suffering again paled his complexion. He looked down at her, a tremor in his voice, "How is your body? We just…" If he had known, he would never have dared to proceed.

Mu Lan offered reassurance, patting his arm. "I'm perfectly fine, there's absolutely nothing to worry about. Had there been any danger, I wouldn't be standing here right now."

Mu Liang pulled her into a tight embrace, burying his face in the curve of her neck. "Why would you do this? Did you wish to experience that pain all over again?"

Mu Lan stroked his broad back, responding, "When Xiao Ying gave birth to a girl, you took the baby yourself. You did want a daughter, didn't you?"

Mu Liang was taken aback, surprised by her keen observation.

Two years prior, as Mu Liang and Mu Lan returned to Paris with the children, they learned of Qi Ying's unexpected pregnancy. The demands of her studies and family left her struggling. Consequently, Mu Lan traveled to Italy with the children to assist her friend with domestic responsibilities, allowing the younger ones ample time with their great-grandfather.

Meanwhile, Mu Liang had been giving his brother, Mu Feng, a difficult time, especially since Qi Ying's departure. Mu Feng, in turn, expressed his regret, having realized he shouldn't have pressured Qi Ying so intensely.

Nine months later, Qi Ying welcomed a son, whom they named Mu Deming. Around the same time, Qi Ying completed her studies. Mu Feng and Qi Ying formalized their union six months after Deming's birth. A year later, Qi Ying became pregnant again, recently giving birth to a daughter named Yuanjun.

During a visit to Qi Ying at the hospital, Mu Liang, Mu Lan, and the children observed Mu Liang holding the newborn girl for an extended period. It was then that Mu Lan truly understood his longing for a daughter.

As Yuanjun was the first girl born into the Mu Family in three generations, the entire family rejoiced. Grandpa Mu Cheng even hosted a grand celebration, cherishing the arrival of a neweração daughter.

Mu Liang's arms tightened around Mu Lan. "Just for that, you took such a risk! What if it's another boy?"

Mu Lan chuckled. "There's no harm in trying. And honestly, there's nothing to fret about. If Xiao Ying could manage two children, so can I."

"You've already given birth to four," Mu Liang sighed, stepping back slightly. "You absolutely cannot work in this condition. We must cancel the plan."

This time, Mu Lan firmly grasped his hand. "You can't do that! I'm not in a critical state, and I won't be working in the mornings. My morning sickness won't interfere with my tasks. Besides, don't you want me close to you while I'm pregnant?"

A headache began to form for Mu Liang; his wife was undeniably headstrong. "I'll contact Lu Feng," he mumbled, reaching for his phone.

Mu Lan stopped him. "I've already contacted Pedro. He's on his way to Paris."

Mu Liang powered down his laptop, took her hand, and pulled her along with him.

Mu Lan looked at him, puzzled. "Are we leaving?"

Mu Liang replied curtly, "Yes."

"But you have work to finish," Mu Lan pointed to the stack of files on the desk.

"I'll attend to them later. I'm taking you back first," Mu Liang stated.

Mu Lan sighed softly, acknowledging her husband's perennial worrywart tendencies.

Two months thereafter, Li Han, Li Shen's father, contacted Mu Lan. "Xiao Lan, how have you been?"

Mu Lan responded warmly, "Uncle, I'm doing well. I hope you are in good health as well."

*p* Li Han responded, "I am old and solitary; this is simply how things are. I contacted you because I wish to entrust you with a portion of the Li Corporation."

Mu Lan let out a sigh. "Uncle, we've already discussed this. I do not require it."

"Xiao Lan, if I cannot pass this on to you, my conscience will torment me. Would you deny this old man a peaceful passing?" Li Han implored.

'It makes no difference how you depart.' Naturally, these words remained unspoken. She declared, "I will bring my eldest son within three days. You may bestow the share upon him. Please exclude me from this arrangement."

Li Han was overjoyed. "Excellent! I shall prepare the necessary documents immediately."

Later that evening, Mu Lan disclosed her plan to Mu Liang. Mu Liang's immediate reaction was, "I will not permit you to travel to China with Lian (rice ball number one) entirely on your own."

Mu Lan reassured him, "I shall not be going alone. Hugo will be accompanying us. Furthermore, we will have the two bodyguards for rice ball number one accompanying us as well."
