". . .Florence."
Huh?
Amelia blinked, baffled, and slightly tilted her head upwards to meet his gaze.
"Who is that?"
’FUCKKK!’
He inwardly cried out, a flicker of panic crossing his mind for a fleeting second.
He had uttered the name without thinking, lost in the tender warmth of the moment and the striking resemblance that still lingered in his thoughts.
However, he knew Amelia could not see his inner turmoil.
Maintaining a composed expression, Brandon managed a gentle, teasing smile, recovering as skillfully as he could.
"It’s a nice name, isn’t it? Perhaps for our daughter..."
H-Huh? Amelia’s eyes widened in utter astonishment.
The blush that had already graced her cheeks intensified instantly, blooming into a vivid crimson that extended all the way to her ears.
Her mouth opened and closed several times before any sound emerged.
"W-What are you talking about? D-D-Daughter?"
Brandon resisted the urge to laugh at her adorably flustered state, keeping his composure and the playful smile firmly in place.
"I’m just saying... it’s a charming name. Florence. Gentle, refined... it would suit a little girl with eyes just like yours."
Amelia’s mind seemed to have gone completely blank.
She remained frozen for another moment, then emitted a small, mortified squeak.
"You- You absolute idiot!"
Overwhelmed by embarrassment, she abruptly pulled away from his embrace, spun around, and bolted from beneath the awning, disappearing into the downpour.
Brandon let out a warm chuckle. "Wait- Amelia!"
He swiftly followed her, stepping out into the heavy rain without a second thought.
The deluge immediately soaked him through once more, but he paid it no mind.
"The rain!" he called out with amusement, easily closing the distance between them in a few long strides. "You’re going to get absolutely soaked!"
Amelia did not stop running.
She continued her dash through the alleyway, making her way back towards the main streets, her face burning with embarrassment even as the cold rain lashed against her skin.
"I’m aware of that!" she shouted back. "But you can't just say things like that after... after kissing me!"
Brandon grinned, reaching out to delicately grasp her wrist, slowing her pace so she wouldn't stumble on the wet cobblestones.
"I was only jesting."
Amelia finally reduced her speed to a walk, rain cascading down her face and plastering her hair to her cheeks and neck.
She turned to face him. "Jesting? You said 'our daughter'! That isn't jesting, that's- t-that's-"
She couldn't even complete the sentence. Instead, she covered her face with both hands, groaning in mortification as they continued their walk through the rain side-by-side.
Brandon chuckled once more, matching her pace.
He gently pulled one of her hands away from her face, wanting to see her expression.
"Hey, it’s alright. I didn’t mean to fluster you so much."
Amelia cautiously peeked at him between her fingers. "You truly are an idiot!" she mumbled, yet a reluctant smile began to play on her lips despite her protests.
"First you kiss me in the rain, then you're talking about naming our future daughter... What kind of person does that?"
"A person who thoroughly enjoyed that kiss," Brandon replied softly, his voice laced with amusement.
"And who believes you'll become a wonderful mother someday."
Amelia let out another embarrassed sound and lightly swatted his arm, though her action lacked any real force.
"Stop it! My heart can’t handle any more tonight."
"Hahahaha..."
They proceeded through the rain together, walking in tandem.
The downpour had subsided somewhat, settling into a steady shower, but both were already completely drenched.
Water dripped from their hair and clothing, yet neither seemed to mind the soaking any longer.
Amelia eventually lowered her hands entirely and looked at him with shy eyes.
"...Florence really is a pretty name," she murmured quietly, her voice barely audible above the rain. "If I ever have a daughter... I might consider it."
Brandon simply offered a gentle smile and a nod. "Hmm."
They continued their walk back towards the castle in a comfortable silence, stealing occasional glances at one another.
Amelia’s cheeks remained tinged with pink throughout the journey, and now and then, a small, embarrassed giggle would escape her lips as she recalled his words.
By the time they arrived at the side gate and slipped back onto the palace grounds, the rain had softened to a light drizzle.
Both were dripping wet, but their faces were graced with matching, gentle smiles.
Amelia paused just inside the garden path and turned to him one final time. "Thank you for tonight, Sir Kael. Even with the sudden rain... and everything else... it was the most wonderful night I've had."
Brandon reached out, gently tucking a damp strand of hair away from her face.
"Anytime you wish to sneak out again, just give the word."
She nodded, biting her lip to conceal her smile, then turned and hurried towards her own balcony before they could be seen by anyone.
Brandon watched her depart for a moment, then let out a long, soft sigh as he gazed up at the heavens.
'Close one...' he mused inwardly, a hand rubbing the back of his neck.
The night had unfolded with an unexpected, breathtaking beauty.
'S-Sir Kael.' a trembling voice called out.
He glanced down from his vantage point in the sky, observing the apprehension etched on Amelia’s face. 'What troubles you?' he inquired.
Gesturing towards the imposing walls, she stammered, 'Because of the rain, the walls will be exceedingly slippery. I find myself unable to climb them... I’m certain I'll fall. Whatever shall I do?'
Hearing her words, Brandon’s brow furrowed slightly as he noted the glistening stones. 'Indeed...' he acknowledged internally.
A soft exhale escaped him. 'It appears I have no alternative.'
Without further ado, Brandon moved forward, gently lifting Amelia into his arms, cradling her in a classic princess embrace.
Amelia emitted a startled gasp, her arms instinctively winding around his neck for support.
'S-Sir Kael... now is hardly the time for—'
'Let this remain our secret, Amelia,' he stated.
Before she could voice further objections, Brandon ascended rapidly into the heavens.
Amelia's eyes widened in sheer astonishment as the ground receded below them at a terrifying pace.
'W-W-W-What is happening?! WHAT IS HAPPENING?' her thoughts raced.
The castle's warm illumination dwindled further beneath them.
Though wind and rain lashed against their faces, Brandon navigated with an innate grace, effortlessly ascending through the nocturnal sky.
Amelia clutched his neck more tightly, her heart pounding a frantic rhythm against her ribs.
She turned her head, her gaze meeting his, and her pupils contracted in dawning realization. 'Y-You are like Lady Rheanne…'
Over the preceding two and a half years, during countless battles alongside Rheanne, clearing numerous dungeons and towers, and continuously pushing his limits while carefully managing his ether, he had attained SS rank some time ago.
Flight, once an endeavor requiring ether discs, was now an effortless capability, fueled by his reinforced physique and honed control.
They ascended higher, piercing through the dense blanket of rain clouds.
The instant they broke free above the storm's fury, the relentless downpour ceased.
The heavens above were clear, adorned by a spectacular full moon that cast a gentle, silvery luminescence over all, accompanied by a myriad of sparkling stars.
Far below, the storm clouds sprawled like a vast, undulating ocean of grey mist, with sporadic lightning flashes illuminating their undersides.
Amelia scarcely had a moment to absorb the unfolding spectacle.
Her jaw dropped in unadulterated wonder as she gazed upon the moon and the star-studded sky.
'...Woah,' she breathed.
Brandon moderated their upward momentum, gently suspending them in mid-air, holding her securely.
The wind at this altitude was refreshingly cool yet mild, playfully rustling stray strands of her damp hair.
'See?' he murmured softly near her ear. 'There is no rain up here.'
Amelia’s gaze drifted from the moon to the awe-inspiring panorama of the cloud layer below, then returned to Brandon’s face.
'It’s... beautiful,' she whispered in reverence. 'I have never witnessed anything quite like it. The moon appears so close... and the stars... everything is remarkably distinct.'
She tightened her arms around his neck, an unconscious gesture, not of fear this time, but simply to anchor herself in this dreamlike moment.
Brandon observed her reaction with a serene smile.
He adjusted his hold slightly to ensure her comfort and began to glide forward leisurely, soaring through the clear night sky above the clouds.
Amelia finally shifted her attention from the celestial display to regard him once more. 'How... how are you accomplishing this? Lady Rheanne possesses the ability to fly as well, but... you stated you were merely her companion. I had assumed you were merely a proficient combatant. Such a revelation…'
Brandon let out a light chuckle. 'Let us simply say that I too, am quite similar to her.'
Amelia nodded slowly, though her mind was evidently alight with a cascade of questions.
She rested her head gently against his shoulder, maintaining her embrace as they drifted serenely through the sky.
The crisp night air brushed against their damp clothing, yet the secure warmth of Brandon’s arms provided Amelia with comfort.
She observed the moon and stars with a quiet fascination, occasionally uttering soft sounds of marvel.
Eventually, Brandon smoothly guided them back towards the castle.
As they descended closer to the ground, Amelia lifted her head, her eyes meeting his once more. 'Thank you... for tonight. It is an experience I shall forever cherish.'
