Chapter 3: The Children
Could there really be someone so brazen in this world that he would look down on her after she’d seen him completely exposed?
It was utterly preposterous!
Whatever! Being the man, he decided he wouldn't sink to the level of arguing with women.
Su Xiaoxiao observed the man, who had been radiating a murderous intent just a moment ago, as he suddenly grew quiet.
One of her eyebrows arched.
Oh? Had he decided to just give up and lie flat?
The man hadn't surrendered; he had simply regained his composure.
Right now, his primary concern was the safety and location of the three children. His personal predicament was secondary by comparison.
He recalled being struck from behind before regaining consciousness in this place.
Exactly what had transpired?
Waving a chubby hand in front of his face, Su Xiaoxiao spoke up. "Why the blank stare? Why did you go silent all of a sudden? Did I squash the brains out of you when I sat on you?"
She shifted her heavy frame slightly. "Fine, I’ll stop crushing you."
He was already past the point of feeling anything!
The man fixed Su Xiaoxiao with a frosty gaze. His expression was a mix of doubt, caution, and wariness, yet notably, there was no trace of disgust.
It was important to note that the original host had been subjected to countless strange looks since her childhood.
While not everyone in the village harbored malice toward her, this man was the very first person who didn't react to her appearance with some form of revulsion.
Frowning, the man questioned, "You claimed your family rescued me. Did they mention anything else?"
Well, they claimed he was her husband.
And apparently, he was the father of her three children.
Su Xiaoxiao crouched on the floor, tracing patterns with her finger as she contemplated how to handle this awkward situation.
From the man’s perspective, he saw nothing but a stout girl with a round head. Every fiber of his being was vibrating with irritation.
The man winced in pain.
Gurgle.
His stomach let out a loud growl.
"Hmm?" Su Xiaoxiao looked up, appearing puzzled. "Are you hungry?"
The man felt a wave of embarrassment.
Before he could respond, Su Xiaoxiao rose and brushed the dust off her hands. "I'll go find you some food."
Honestly, this man had completely forgotten that he was starving!
Su Xiaoxiao headed to the kitchen and returned with two bowls of sweet potato soup and a dish of chives. One of the bowls had already cooled down.
"Do you need me to feed you, or can you manage on your own?" Su Xiaoxiao inquired.
"I can eat by myself. Release my bonds," the man replied. Noticing her hesitation, he added with a frown, "I won't attack you."
Su Xiaoxiao proceeded to untie the ropes binding his limbs and assisted him into a sitting position on the bed, propping him up with a pillow.
Since his wounds were concentrated on his stomach and legs, his arms were free to move, allowing him to feed himself.
Su Xiaoxiao dragged her personal small table over to the bedside, setting down the hot sweet potato soup and the chives.
Being generally lazy about leaving her bed, this was exactly how Father Su and Su Ergou usually served her.
The man looked at the meal without much interest, yet he knew he needed to regain his strength quickly.
He forced himself to take a mouthful of the soup and was startled by how delicious it was.
The natural sweetness of the potatoes had bled into the broth, creating a sweet yet subtly salty flavor. Enhanced by a hint of fresh green onion, the taste rivaled anything prepared by professional chefs in the capital.
He sampled the chives next. They were perfectly crispy on the outside while remaining soft inside. The flavor was equally impressive.
Could this woman really be the one who cooked this? It seemed improbable.
"What is your name?" Su Xiaoxiao asked while sipping her own soup at the table.
The man paused briefly before answering, "Wei Ting."
"Su Daya."
Su Xiaoxiao provided the name belonging to her current body.
Wei Ting remained silent after that, pushing through his physical agony to finish the meal.
Su Xiaoxiao stole occasional glances at him.
Even with his face swollen like a pig's, his manner of eating betrayed an air of nobility.
However, he carried an incredibly cold aura.
How could she put it?
It was the kind of presence one acquired after crawling out from under a mountain of corpses, a murderous intent forged in blood.
This man had surely taken many lives!
Did Father Su have any idea what kind of dangerous person he had brought home?
Furthermore, her earlier examination revealed numerous lacerations. Two particularly deep wounds were located on his upper right abdomen and his left calf.
The injuries showed signs of basic first aid; Father Su must have applied some medicine.
Despite this, his blood loss had been severe. His pulse was faint and his Qi was weak. Given the trauma to his midsection, she couldn't rule out internal hemorrhaging.
In truth, his condition was far more critical than it appeared on the surface.
In her previous life, she would have been entirely confident in her ability to save him, but now...
....
Once the meal was over, Wei Ting settled in to rest.
Su Xiaoxiao was also drained, mostly because her current weight made any activity exhausting. She was built for eating and sleeping, not manual labor.
After cleaning the dishes, Su Xiaoxiao collapsed onto her own bed.
Perhaps because she was preoccupied with the man's condition, she drifted into a dream where she was back at her base's pharmacy.
This medical facility sat on the highest floor of the research building. It was still under construction and not yet operational, meaning very few people had access.
Su Xiaoxiao was one of the privileged few.
In her dream, she grabbed a first-aid kit from a table and began stocking it with emergency supplies from the shelves.
While she was picking out items, she suddenly snapped awake.
Su Xiaoxiao chuckled to herself. Talk about being dedicated to the job—she was even dreaming about treating that man.
The smile vanished from her face a second later.
She realized she was actually holding a first-aid kit in her hands.
....
"Daya! I've returned!"
Su Cheng’s cheerful shout echoed from outside. Su Xiaoxiao quickly hid the medical bag under her quilt.
"Stay calm," she whispered to herself. "Don't panic."
Putting on a smile, she composed herself and walked out of the room.
After their day of "robbing" the locals, Su Cheng and Su Ergou had visited the town to buy Su Daya’s favorite treats.
The three children, having been forced to work all day, had fallen into a deep sleep from sheer exhaustion on the way home. Su Ergou carried two of them, while Father Su carried the third.
Su Xiaoxiao had passed out so quickly earlier that she hadn't gotten a good look at them. Now that she saw them clearly, she was stunned.
They had perfectly round faces, delicate features, and long, sweeping lashes. They were easily the most beautiful children she had ever encountered. Seeing them look so peaceful and innocent in their sleep made her heart melt.
She hadn't expected such a cold man to have such adorable offspring.
Su Xiaoxiao reached out and poked the cheeks of the three little ones.
Oh.
So incredibly soft.
As if disturbed by her touch, the three little boys opened their eyes one by one.
"Oh? Dad, they're up!" Su Ergou sounded like he was about to burst into tears. "Finally! I'm exhausted!"
Carrying them for several kilometers had nearly snapped his arms!
Su Xiaoxiao looked at the triplets with a hint of suspicion.
Was she imagining things?
Why did it seem like they hadn't actually been asleep?
Could these kids have been faking it the whole way just to get a free ride from Father Su and Su Ergou?
She shook the thought away.
Babies only two or three years old couldn't possibly be that calculating!
