Capítulo 2752: Chapter 1510: Trap Within a Trap (Part 2)
Upon spotting Leo Ray and his companions arriving, the sentinel parasites fled without putting up a fight, darting swiftly into the fortress's inner sanctum.
"That was too straightforward!"
Witnessing the parasites scatter in panic, Moli lifted her pale face and prepared to rush at the active teleportation array, only for Leo Ray to yank her back.
"Boy from the human realm, what's your hold-up?"
Moli massaged her slim arm, giving Leo Ray a sulky look.
"This feels suspicious; the foes pulled back far too smoothly."
Leo Ray furrowed his forehead, signaling his followers to avoid rushing toward the teleportation array rashly.
The purpose behind confining us in this fortress and performing a detailed sweep was obviously to wipe us out and stop us from supporting Observation City.
Even after taking severe casualties, they possess sufficient power to battle, at minimum to stall us briefly.
Under these conditions, surrendering the location without resistance makes no sense.
"Boy from the human realm, do you mean they've laid ambushes near the teleportation array?"
Though somewhat reckless, Moli wasn't dim-witted and grasped Leo Ray's worry promptly.
"Your Majesty speaks true!"
The Grey Elder stepped out from the parade ground's gloom and approached the assembly.
Leo Ray first employed an extermination array scroll to check his identity. Once verified, he questioned right away, "Elder, weren't you meant to head back to Observation City with the report? What keeps you lingering here?"
"Replying to Your Majesty, upon getting your command, this humble servant hurried to this spot to return to Observation City, yet ran into a band of mages installing magical snares, interspersed with parasites. I attempted in vain to reach the teleportation array and had to conceal myself since they'd barricaded the entire zone, making it impossible to locate Your Majesty."
The Grey Elder sighed in frustration, dropping to his knees in shame: "Forgive me, Your Majesty; my failure has let you down."
"Elder, that's not the case; I failed to anticipate the adversaries fully dominating this fortress, placing you in grave danger."
Leo Ray assisted the Grey Elder to stand, while his elite forces tackled the magical snares encircling the teleportation array.
Guided by Moli and Sheila, both half-step Seventh-order powerhouses, they uncovered various covert magical traps and began dismantling them rapidly.
"Ah, Your Majesty, I've spotted an unusual detail too. The teleportation array functions properly, yet no backup forces have shown up."
The Grey Elder stated solemnly.
"I've observed this oddity myself."
Leo Ray confirmed with a subtle nod.
Ever since stepping into this fortress, an odd unease has lingered, accompanied by a string of troubles.
Though most issues got sorted, two mysteries persist unsolved.
First concerns how "Corrosion" stealthily seized this fortress, and the second, as the Grey Elder pointed out, involves why no reinforcements from Observation City have emerged despite the intact teleportation array.
For sure, under such peril to Observation City, at least someone ought to arrive seeking aid or shut down the teleportation array; closing one side would halt the other automatically.
But it keeps humming along, which baffles everyone completely.
"Regardless, getting back to Observation City remains the top priority now."
With that in mind, Leo Ray shifted his focus back to the area around the teleportation array.
At that point, Moli, Sheila, and the rest had removed obstacles, carving a secure route right to the teleportation array.
As Leo Ray moved ahead toward the teleportation array, Moli halted him this time.
"Boy from the human realm, this teleportation array seems wrong!"
Moli gripped Leo Ray's sleeve and advanced cautiously.
Getting nearer, Moli raised her magic wand and rapidly drew an elaborate grey magic formation over the teleportation array, summoning a portal in front of them.
This teleportation array stood out, filled not with the usual grey liquid but pure blackness, resembling a horrifying void mouth lurking silently for them to step inside.
"This shows the destination side of the teleportation array, linking straight to the void's core without any real-space outlet."
Moli explained, her eyebrows creased deeply.
"What?"
Hearing this, cold sweat broke out among the group, and they exchanged uneasy glances.
It clearly implied that entering without caution would plunge them into the boundless void depths, a sure path to doom.
"A scheme layered on another, it appears. This must be the ultimate deadly ploy."
Leo Ray inhaled sharply, a shiver running through him; the enemies' deceptions were truly sly.
Overcome with dread, Leo Ray promptly inquired of Moli, "Can the teleportation array be relinked?"
"The sabotage is extensive; without active fixes from Observation City's end, it'd require a full day for me to restore the connection."
Moli shook her head, her expression brimming with regret: "It's clear now why no reinforcements arrived; they couldn't possibly come through."
"We can't afford to linger a day here."
Without delay, Leo Ray turned his gaze decisively toward the city wall.
The foes were depleted, and the Absolute Imprisonment Barrier had just dissolved; since the teleportation array failed, heading straight to Observation City was the plan.
In this expansive underground realm, despite the span, traveling at maximum pace would take only moments.
Yet Observation City likely faced encirclement by Corrosion's massive forces, posing immense risk. This direct route served as an undesirable alternative to the teleportation array.
With options exhausted, hesitation couldn't prevail.
"Understood, fortunately I placed a spatial marker close to the fortress wall beforehand; despite disruptions, I can shift us there instantly!"
Moli comprehended, twirled her magic wand through the air, and the entire group disappeared from position.
Reappearing, they stood near the earlier wall site, and with one more flicker, they emerged beyond the fortress.
"Forward!"
Leo Ray spearheaded the dash, aiming directly for Observation City.
Several days prior, Leo Ray had covertly journeyed via standard paths between the Underground Fortress and Observation City, guided by Old Book, exactly to ready for crises such as this.
"The old City Lord and I dismissed its importance; never imagined it'd prove vital today."
While hurtling ahead at furious velocity, Leo Ray narrowed his eyes at Observation City's bearing.
At such range, the imposing walls and inner glows ought to come into view.
Yet everything remained shrouded in total darkness.
"How peculiar; supposing Observation City dimmed lights for protection, the blasts from Corrosion's magic cannons and the glow of parasites' spells should still shine, so what's causing this utter blackness?"
Moli picked up on it as well, cocking her head in bewilderment across her smooth features.
In the meantime, Leo Ray cast a night vision magic scroll on himself and kept scanning toward Observation City.
Before long, nearing further, Leo Ray's eyes bulged in shock.
The expansive zone where Observation City was supposed to be lay barren, devoid of any sign it ever existed.
