“Are you inquiring about my identity?”
Upon hearing Leo Ray's query, a flicker of bewilderment appeared on the elderly man's face, etched with deep creases beneath his sandy robes. Vicissitude marked his expression as he started murmuring to himself: “Three thousand years have elapsed, and this remains a riddle I've constantly wrestled with. Unfortunately, despite exhausting my thoughts, no valuable recollections emerge.”
“I appear as merely one tiny grain amid countless specks, oblivious to my beginnings or my fate.”
“Who am I? What am I truly? Why did I end up here? Who placed me in this spot? And whom did I inter in times gone by?”
With those words, the old man in sandy robes shook his head in resignation toward Leo Ray and replied: “Youngster, in these three thousand years, you're only the second soul to pose this to me, yet alas, I remain unable to provide an answer since I've lost so much. My very essence feels fragmented.”
“Have I lost it all as well? This reply rings with an uncanny familiarity. Clearly, this being endured the Era of Blankness, maybe even met its end there.”
“Still, be it Elder Bing, or the survivors from the Era of Blankness I've encountered, or fragments from ancient scrolls, nothing speaks of such an immense and horrifying entity in the Silver Moon Era. Though its bodily form eludes me, it must span thousands of meters, or perhaps tens of thousands, in length, no?”
“An entity so prominent couldn't escape notice. Maybe Elder Bing and the rest have also erased this presence from memory?”
“Alternatively, it could be a formidable force that emerged only in the Era of Blankness, like a divine pet, a god-forged weapon, or a god in its own right? Dwelling in the Divine Realm, it's no wonder the Ten Thousand Clans remain ignorant of it.”
“Furthermore, its evident dread of the Power of Divine Grace bolsters these notions strongly.”
“Yet, it bears some intriguing link to ‘Corrosion’—what could that signify?”
“One thing is clear: this creature ties into the Era of Blankness, likely in a profound way.”
Realizing his knowledge fell short, Leo Ray ceased his reflections and pressed on: “Your Excellency, you said I'm the second in three thousand years to ask. Who was the first?”
“The initial visitor didn't resemble you; instead, they bore a striking likeness to your companion here.”
The elderly man in sandy robes gestured toward Sina and added: “The sole distinction was that the first one's serpentine tail shone blue.”
“A tail of blue scales?”
Sina's lovely eyes sparkled with realization, and she turned to Leo Ray: “Human Sovereign, this elder's description almost certainly points to my forebear, the inaugural Queen of the Medusas following the Era of Blankness!”
“Royal records detail how that ancestor possessed a blue snake tail. It was through a pact with a mysterious being that our line, during each queen's ascension, could invoke the Magic Stele and claim the arcane abilities our ancestor bequeathed! The surge in might came as a boon from that mysterious being!”
“This very reason elevated this site to our Holy Land. Though the mysterious being never resurfaced over three millennia, leading some later queens to dismiss it as myth, the rite to awaken the Stele endured unchanged, persisting until now.”
Sina stared in astonishment at the old man in sandy robes and went on: “Evidently, this venerable figure is the very mysterious being chronicled in our lore!”
After her words, fresh doubt clouded Sina's pale features yet again.
Prior to stepping into this enigmatic domain, she herself had doubted the tales in the records, never imagining that the pristine special area her people guarded as utmost secret lay nestled within the enigmatic being's skeletal frame.
“A mysterious being? That's the label that one applied to me—apt indeed, since I myself remain clueless about my true nature.”
The old man in sandy robes gave a faint nod and confirmed: “Yes, I forged a covenant with that individual long ago. They devoted all to pierce my veil of identity, and in return, I aided their lineage in claiming portions of their mastered arts. The boost in strength? A mere side effect, as the legacy demanded a trace of my essence, faint though it was, almost insignificant.”
“Almost insignificant, yet it empowers a Tier 6 Expert to new heights? What an astonishing assertion.”
Leo Ray offered a bitter smile, then composed himself gravely, probing further: “Those myriad white, eye-resembling orbs the size of fists beyond, do they form part of you too, Your Excellency?”
“You refer to the Guardians of Devouring? Yes, they stem from me.”
The elderly man in sandy robes answered without surprise: “Their emergence signals an attempt to compel the Stele's activation, for the Stele is fundamentally my bone, linked to my vital core. Forcing it to life endangers me somewhat, so their arising to strike isn't unexpected.”
“Naturally, grasping this might prove challenging for you, but it's simply an innate function of my form. Moreover, this guise you behold isn't my authentic shape, merely a manifestation shaped for your understanding.”
