Endless Evolution: Last Star Chapter 1680 1680: Red Scavengers

Although the Pit appeared chaotic on the surface, it actually turned out to be a remarkably safe and tranquil location.
Strange artifacts filled the area, apparently collected from every corner of the globe, yet a monster lurking there posed no danger unless a Frenzied Shard was its specific prey.
In truth, the Frenzied Servants were the primary menace to anyone venturing into the Pit. Every Servant fiercely protected its domain to shield the Frenzied Shard bound by its contract.
Of course, plenty of other monsters roamed besides the Servants—after all, recruits for Servants had to come from somewhere. Still, none dared challenge three Fangs and a mysterious Phantom of equal or greater might.
Therefore, Adam, Loargh, Vyora, and Sarka had progressed halfway toward the sword wall, guided solely by the amber flow.
Talk had ceased entirely as they braced for combat with a formidable enemy. With the revelation of this Frenzied Shard's lair, the third servant emerged as the true threat, far beyond the initial pair.
The first two served merely as practice bouts, allowing the Frenzied Shard to scout and empower its third servant to maximum potential.
Indeed, Frenzied Shards lacked mobility. Their pace was sluggish, outrunnable even by average humans, much less Elders or K4-Phantoms.
'Hmm, when Sarka mentioned the dome pillars, I pictured all monsters inside resembling Loargh. But…' His eyes fixed on Vyora. 'Don't these two look strikingly alike? Why were they assigned to separate pillars?'
Lost in contemplation, Adam completely missed the approaching red glow.
Whooooooooosh!
The white streak flashed by before he could respond, teleporting him and Loargh onto a nearby rock in an instant.
Vyora and Sarka simultaneously leaped aside.
Like a laser beam, the crimson ray crashed into the earth, unleashing a massive explosion that hurled dust clouds and layers of gray grit skyward.
"What the…?" Adam glanced upward, spotting countless specks dotting the heavens.
The assailants soon unveiled themselves. Adam first noticed their spherical, bizarre forms and solitary massive eyes.
'Hold on. Could these be Gray Watchers?'
That initial hunch crossed Adam's mind, yet closer inspection revealed these creatures as distinctly different.
Unlike amber, their eyes gleamed blood-red. Their frames were pitch-black instead of gray. Below those enormous eyes gaped toothy maws lined with razor fangs—absent in Gray Watchers—plus four shadowy limbs, two per side.
"Shit." Loargh swore, an uncommon slip for him. "I figured they might appear, but hoped we'd dodge them."
"They?"
Loargh nodded.
"These are the Red Scavengers. Straightforward name that captures their essence perfectly. They typically swoop in to devour corpses of mighty beasts. Then, they're harmless—no clashes with other monsters even occur."
His tone deepened gravely.
"But another trigger exists: the Frenzied Shard's energy." Loargh gestured toward the amber flow. "That's our situation precisely. They detected it and seized the chance."
Right then, as over a dozen Red Scavengers wheeled overhead, a few dove nearer to the surface.
With erratic dives, they sliced through the amber flow, shredding it on each pass.
Admittedly, the stream held just minuscule traces of Frenzied Shard energy, but that sufficed amply for Red Scavengers.
"That's odd." Adam squinted. "Why just them? Where's the rest of the monster horde? They ought to scramble for this precious flow too."
Loargh advanced, arcs of white lightning crackling over his form. Battle stance engaged.
"Because they pull it off risk-free. Regrettably, no explanation here. Vyora and I can't fathom why Red Scavengers resist the Frenzied Shard's corrosive force. Unique ability of theirs."
"But there's more to it, right?" Adam probed, his aura steadily intensifying.
He felt this was far from over.
"Exactly. Harmless to them, yet side effects linger even for these pests."
Loargh indicated the Red Scavengers. Tremors shook their bodies as yellow flames traced fiery paths across their outlines.
This afflicted every Red Scavenger that had devoured the amber flow—every one but a single outlier.
Just like the rest, that creature had acquired fresh power. But rather than amber flames, yellow lightning bolts crackled out from its body.
"They're losing it, like piranhas smelling blood—they won't quit until they've ripped some flesh apart."
Whoooooooosh!
Right then, a pair of Red Scavengers bared their jaws, firing off a storm of red beams at Sarka and Vyora.
Explosions trailed every beam, while Sarka and Vyora just barely evaded them all.
"Damn it! Stay back from me!" Sarka yelled, as three additional Red Scavengers encircled her. They matched her pace with ease, their grins stretching wide.
Step.
Electrical sparks raced along the ground as Loargh advanced, the surges even brushing Adam.
"I didn't plan to reveal this yet. My bad for not alerting you earlier. I'll fix it now."
A white flash gleamed in Sarka's eyes, and in that instant, Loargh blurred into motion before Adam's gaze.
White lightning erupted in a flash, obliterating the three Red Scavengers around her. Next, the pair blasting Vyora met the same fate, as Loargh pressed on toward the Red Scavengers floating overhead.
His blazing speed and might transformed him into a radiant white star.
Adam swallowed hard.
He understood that taking down this Fang would prove far tougher than his initial foe.
