Endless Debt Chapter 1344 - 106: Turmoil of Conflict (Part 2)
Previously on Endless Debt...
Even the Ether reaction is nowhere to be found.
This is not good news. Evan took a deep breath as the scorching heat waves washed over him. The Gray Stone Rift had already turned into a sea of fire, with heat waves continually sweeping across the land. The staff appeared insignificantly small amidst the firelight.
"Alright, I understand."
Evan controlled his emotions well. As Holt’s adjutant, meaning the deputy head of the Desperate Outpost, he had to rationally shoulder responsibility at such times.
"What’s the situation with the this-world calamity?" Evan continued to ask.
"It has grown a brain, and it seems someone has forcibly controlled it. Currently, it’s attempting to break through Raymond Gaudent’s blockade," real-time intelligence quickly arrived, "We’re suppressing it with firepower, but with little effect, and it has already noticed the outpost."
Nested upon the cliff, the Desperate Outpost now seemed like a major firepoint. All the turreted giant crossbows fired continuously, forming a lethal torrent of steel mid-air.
The sound of firing was deafening, a commotion never before heard in the silent Abandoned Land.
The deadly firepower shattered most of the Beast of the Herd’s body, but this was a futile act, for as the body broke apart, it healed itself simultaneously. And now, the outpost’s counterattack had attracted its attention, one after another, gigantic bone spears whistled through the air.
"Careful!"
Someone shouted out in alarm, only to be pierced by the several-meter-long gigantic bone spear, their figure instantly crushed into pulp, with the structure being breached layer by layer, trembling incessantly.
Ghostly shrieks echoed in the air, followed by several more gigantic bone spears cutting through the sky, with explosions following one after another. The gigantic bone spears accurately destroyed various turrets, with flames shooting skyward.
The communication officer struggled to stand from the ground, wiping fresh blood from his forehead...he wasn’t injured, the blood wasn’t his. Looking beside him, his familiar colleague was now reduced to half a body.
"Ha... ha..."
He widened his eyes, suppressing nausea and fear, and fought to keep his voice steady, "It... it has started its counterattack, destroying several giant cannons, but we’re still resisting."
The relentless fire from the Desperate Outpost paused for a few seconds before resuming the battle. Deadly cannon shots and crossbow arrows continuously pierced into the Beast of the Herd’s body. With years of establishment by the Order Bureau, this place was more like a battlefield fortress than an outpost.
Tons upon tons of flesh were ripped apart, with blood cascading down like waterfalls. The Beast of the Herd let out massive mourning cries, and within its amber-like translucent flesh, the grotesquely large brain inside suffered a series of blows to Hammer’s consciousness.
The Beast of the Herd was far too colossal, diluting Hammer’s consciousness along with it. Defending against incinerating burns and controlling the body had already exhausted the majority of his mental strength. The counterattack from the Desperate Outpost further augmented his stress.
The consciousness began to become muddled, countless noises filled the mind, and every action came with huge latency, like an old man on the brink of collapse.
Yet even so, Hammer maintained considerable destructiveness. With just a thought utilizing the Beast of the Herd, something could be destroyed.
The earth below started boiling, with the dormant ashes writhing rapidly, showing a bizarre liquid-like texture. Shortly thereafter, columns of gas erupted, splashing ashes skyward, with crimson flesh tendrils swiftly emerging from beneath the ashes, crawling up along the precipice.
Its target was the Desperate Outpost.
The Beast of the Herd had seized almost all the attention of the staff. Only when those countless filamentous flesh tendrils scaled the platforms did the staff notice the ambush lurking in the shadows.
Pressure mounted steeply.
Ether reactions flared up one after another, with various Secret Energy factions executing chain bombardments. Blood flowed like rivers atop the platforms.
The communication officer dodged staggeringly, his heart thudding, serving as a functional employee along with Yuriel, for communication purposes only, hence his tier being merely the ordinary First Stage.
This level of battlefield intensity was beyond the reach of a First Stage Condenser, yet he suppressed fear continuously, continually reporting the situation to Evan.
"Those flesh tendrils have climbed onto the outpost. We must divert some staff to handle them, which will drastically reduce the suppression of the this-world calamity."
The communication officer reported calmly, knowing that fear is contagious, and he couldn’t afford to show the slightest hint of dread.
"Our work is like battling death itself. Once you fear it, your expiration date arrives."
That’s what Holt had once told them, something the communication officer had always held close to heart.
"We can still hold on," he continued, "Things are still under control."
A moment later, a response came through the Heart Core Net from Evan.
"Alright."
A simple, direct response, even devoid of much emotion.
The communication officer guessed Evan must know how dire the situation was here, and he too understood the fate awaiting everyone... actually, the communication officer himself knew as well.
Yet no one exposed this tragic lie, maintaining a blind courage as they roared defiantly at death, as if it couldn’t snatch their lives away.
"Talk about a leisure job, once something happens, it really becomes life-threatening."
The communication officer chuckled a few times, and after a while, bursts of laughter indeed returned through the Heart Core Net, with many people amused by his remark.
The environment of the Desperate Outpost was harsh, yet very leisurely. Many team members had come in with this thought in mind, luckily, the leisurely times hadn’t eroded everyone’s resolve. Until the flesh tendrils covered most of the outpost, the staff continued to hold their positions.
