The Divine Son's strength was undeniably real, but to Max it still felt like a beautiful palace erected on stolen foundations.

The next several battles passed even faster. Kaiden Voidmere defeated a beast-blooded warrior by folding the space beneath his feet so that his charge collapsed halfway through. Morgana Starveil overcame a thunder-winged spearwoman by cursing the lightning around her wings until every burst of speed dragged the woman deeper into Morgana's trap.

Rosaline Lunara faced a soul-path participant and calmly sealed his soul bells inside radiant petals, forcing his surrender before he could activate his strongest technique. Fin Arclight fought a bloodfire cultivator and scraped out a narrow victory after using Pale Eclipse Burial to dull the burning rhythm of the bloodfire, though the battle left him breathing harder than before.

The moment the battle began, Kael underwent a partial transformation, silver fur sweeping down his arms while his claws gleamed like divine blades. He shot toward Max with enough speed to scatter afterimages across the stage.

Max did not call upon the Vein of Origin this time, because he did not need it. When Kael appeared behind him and slashed toward his neck, Max turned slightly, caught the incoming wrist, and hurled him across the stage. Kael twisted in midair, landed on his feet, and attacked again, but Max stepped forward and struck him once in the chest with his palm.

Kael crashed into the barrier and slid down its surface, coughing blood. He tried to rise, and then he slowly lowered his head.

Orion looked toward Revona's pillar and smiled faintly. "This will be troublesome."

Revona opened her eyes slowly, and the void-colored light within them flickered like some ancient emptiness given form.

"You think so?" she asked with a smile.

The arena fell completely silent.
