"I see." A wry smile tugged at Max's lips as realization washed over him. The turn of events hadn't been what he foresaw, yet he felt no real concern about it either.
Elder Virelia had chosen him as her disciple entirely on her own accord, and that fact satisfied him completely. He cherished the chance she'd given him, while the thoughts of the other disciples held zero importance to him.
Should any of them try stirring up issues about this, they'd have to deal with the fallout on their own.
Max kept chatting with Carl and Laura a bit longer, as they described the standout talents from various halls and the status they enjoyed in the Black Dragon Palace.
Max paid keen attention, locking the details firmly in his mind. While their discussion flowed, disciples started assembling at the main gathering spot, the assembly growing thicker moment by moment.
In only a handful of minutes, the count of disciples on site soared past ten thousand. This sight truly stunned Max. If the earlier view of more than a thousand had caught him off guard, then beholding ten thousand crammed into one chamber silenced him for a moment.
And that was merely from one of the thirty-six halls. Picture the total if every disciple from all thirty-six halls came together— what an immense throng it would be? On top of that, these were just the outer disciples, leaving out the inner and core ones entirely.
The colossal magnitude of the Black Dragon Palace slammed into him fully at last, helping him grasp its enormous scope and formidable strength.
"Heh, look. The top three are here." Laura pointed out abruptly, gesturing toward a specific spot.
Max traced her finger and quickly noticed three young disciples weaving through the masses.
Up front strode a man radiating haughtiness, his stance and stare brimming with dominance, like the entire world needed to yield to his path.
Right on his heels came a woman with flowing black hair, her movements steady and poised, her bearing serene and refined, forming a sharp difference from the fellow at the head.
The final figure trailing them was a young man with a detached look, his countenance even and unruffled, as if the bustle nearby failed to spark any curiosity in him.
"The one in the lead is Dale Feling, ranked third among the outer disciples." Laura murmured her explanation. "He hails from one of the seven main families of the Black Dragon Clan. The woman behind him is Jane Lumin from the Lumin Family, also one of the seven main families. She is ranked second. The one at the back is Aden Holloway. He is not from any of the seven main families, but his strength is the strongest in our Thirty Third Hall. He holds the first rank among the outer disciples."
Max observed the trio in silence and verified that their cultivation matched Carl and Laura's, each at the pinnacle of the Rebirth Realm. However, within the group, solely Aden Holloway sparked a mild warning in him, a quiet tension stemming not from blatant energy but from a profound and tightly controlled essence.
"Are you the one who took the Sword of the Sword Sovereign and also became Elder Virelia's disciple?" Dale surged ahead abruptly and demanded of Max in a superior tone, his stare piercing and laden with evident scorn.
"What about it?" Max responded steadily, his face at ease.
"Nothing." Dale smirked with chill. "It is just that you do not look qualified for either of those things."
Max offered a faint smile. "And yet they chose me over you."
Dale's face clouded over instantly. "Do not think too highly of yourself, Max. You might be recognized by them, but here in the Thirty Third Hall, I am the one in charge. You are only a first level Rebirth Realm disciple, so you should behave like one."
"Oh, I will," Max replied with a grin, then threw in offhandedly, "But if that is the case, how are you the one in charge when you are ranked third?"
The instant Max uttered those words, Carl and Laura came close to erupting in laughter. They swiftly averted their gazes, shoulders quivering as they fought to suppress their mirth.
Dale's features hardened right away. A spark of shame darted through his eyes, soon overtaken by raging fury. No outer disciple had ever posed such a query to him before. It stood as a notorious forbidden topic, avoided by all, yet Max had trodden upon it without a second thought.
"Max, you are lucky this is a gathering," Dale hissed between gritted teeth, his gaze dripping with poison. "Otherwise, I would have broken your legs and arms right here."
Max merely chuckled, giving no response whatsoever.
That chuckle only stoked Dale's wrath even higher. Watching Max brush him off so breezily after the taunt sent his temper surging. He fixed Max with a spiteful stare, his mind churning with ill intent as he wheeled around. 'You had better pray you do not run into me during the trials,' he seethed inwardly before melting into the throng.
"You should be careful of Dale," Jane remarked with a soft smile while gliding past Max. "He is very narrow minded and conceited, so it is best to stay alert around him."
With that, she moved on as well.
Aden didn't bother glancing at Max once. He passed by like Max was utterly nonexistent, his eyes far-off and vacant, as if his thoughts had already drifted away from the chaos nearby.
"You really had to ask Dale that question," Laura noted while shaking her head, her look blending humor and worry. "Now he is definitely going to look for trouble with you."
Carl, meanwhile, just grinned, plainly delighted by the exchange.
Max lifted his shoulders carelessly. "Let him come. It is not like I fear him or anything."
Laura squinted at him, peering intently at his face. "You sound extremely confident. Do you really think you can defeat him, and even us?"
Max flashed a grin, a spark of mischief lighting his eyes. "Who knows." He let out a soft laugh, obviously carefree.
Right as Laura prepared to press the talk further, five shapes materialized high above the central hub, their arrival seizing the focus of all disciples assembled beneath.
