Kaiden and his companions discuss arrangements for new staff and potential recruits. Yunohana, despite being teased about her nickname and Calypso's advances, expresses a desire to learn to fight alongside the group and improve her combat skills. Later, Kaiden and Yunohana coordinate securing a new territory for the Dungeon-Born, while the rest prepare for their next dungeon crawl. They enter a disused quarry dungeon filled with porcelain soldiers and mysterious robed figures who use magical masks to empower their front lines.

Scarlet writing poured from the mage’s red mask and gathered into a spear of fire above the soldiers.

Kaiden jumped sideways as it fired. Heat scraped across his back, followed by a crash that showered the plaza with fragments of the steps he had just left.

“There we go,” Nyx murmured. “I’d have been disappointed if it only changed their armor’s color.”

She brought [Harem Vision] online with a thought, sharing her view of the porcelain ranks advancing through the dust. Kaiden opened his feed too, giving the arriving viewers a choice of perspectives.

Alice dissolved into golden light beside the stairs and gathered above Kaiden as a dark halo.

‘I see it.’

Reaching the first soldier, he drove his gauntleted fist into its shield with Wrath burning through his body. The impact cracked the translucent armor covering the shield and forced the creature back into its companions.

It stayed standing.

Before he could hit it again, its neighbor thrust a curved sword over the shield’s edge. Kaiden twisted clear of the point, but the blade opened his shoulder as it passed, hot pain running down his arm.

He caught the sword’s flat against his gauntlet and forced it outward. Beside him, Calypso brought her axe down into the gap he had made.

*CRACK!*

Her blade bit through the attacking soldier’s forearm. A second blow severed the gold ring holding its elbow together, sending the sword clattering across the paving.

“They’re rather sturdy, Darling!”

“Especially with their mage helping.”

Blue light was already filling the cracks in the first soldier’s armor. Behind the ranks, the headless caster held its mask above its collar, chanting while its free hand traced more writing into the air.

Kaiden let Wrath go and reached for Envy, concentrating on the blue script over the shield in front of him.

The spell resisted. For a moment, he could feel the mage feeding more power into it while the soldier tried to batter him away.

Ducking beneath the shield’s rim gave him another moment to concentrate. He pressed Envy into the writing until its strokes went dark and the blue plates broke apart.

“Cali!”

Her axe hooked the exposed shield and dragged it aside. Kaiden stepped into the opening, seized the creature’s sword wrist, and drove his other fist into its painted face.

Porcelain cracked beneath his knuckles. The soldier drove its helmet into his forehead in return, making his eyes water, but he kept his grip and smashed its face again.

On the third blow, his gauntlet went through the face.

He tore his hand free as the soldier collapsed, already looking for the next sword coming over its shoulder.

Behind the ranks, the red-masked mage changed its chant.

“Kai, red one’s aiming at you!”

Nyx’s warning reached him as a second fire spear formed above the troops. He pulled Calypso toward the fallen soldier’s place, clearing the shot’s path just before it ripped through the space beside them.

The heat scorched his cheek. Across the plaza, a black marble column burst under the impact.

“Oh, come on!” Luna shouted.

She had reached the formation’s flank, only for the soldiers there to turn their shields toward her. “I was just about to cut you all apart! Couldn’t you have reacted one second late?” Her Stormblade skidded along one gold rim, spraying sparks before she sprang away from the answering thrusts.

The moment she landed, the red mask turned toward her.

“[Silver Thread].”

Yunohana’s thread caught the mage’s raised wrist. A sharp pull turned its aim skyward, sending the next fire spear between the galleries.

“Thank you, Miss… Mil- Uh… Unfunny Boomer!”

“???” Yunohana’s eyes widened, her head snapping in the gremlin’s direction. “I might be older than you, coarse zoomer girl, but I’m only a millennial, I’ll have you know!”

“Boomer, millennial, you’re all ancient! Hahaha!”

With the red mage struggling against Yunohana’s thread, Luna scattered into lightning and slipped around the soldiers’ flank. She re-formed behind them with her Stormblade already swinging for the caster’s arm.

It caught her sword on a spare mask snatched from its belt.

“You little shit!”

The mask shattered on her second strike. By then, the creature had jerked its other wrist free of the silver thread and brought the red face toward her.

Luna dropped beneath its mouth as fire roared across the plaza, then drove her blade up through the empty collar.

Lightning flashed inside the robe. The mage convulsed, giving her time to wrench the sword sideways and cut its upper body apart.

The system credited Kaiden’s part in the fight as the red mask struck the paving.

Kaiden switched from Envy to Lust, feeding strength into his bonded partners as he met the next soldier. Through Aria’s bond, he could feel the effort of shaping the moonlight gathering above her hands.

“Cali, keep that one here!” she called.

“On it!” Calypso caught a shield charge on her axe haft. The collision drove her back a step, then another, her boots gouging the paving while the creature pressed its weight into her.

A blade came around its shield and sliced across her thigh.

“Ah, you bastard!”

Alexandra formed a golden barrier beneath the soldier’s sword arm. She raised it against its elbow, preventing it from drawing back for another cut while Calypso shoved her shoulder into the shield.

Carnage smoked from the wound in her leg. With a pleased, vicious grin, the demoness forced the creature to face the open center of the plaza.

“All yours, needy gal! Blast them apart!”

From beside the stairs, Bastet washed the soldier’s back in concentrated sunlight. Blue armor flared against the heat, its protective script bright enough to hurt Kaiden’s eyes before the spell finally gave way.

“Now, Aria.”

Aria’s lance struck the scorched porcelain between its shoulders. The point drove through its chest and burst against the inside of its shield, throwing fragments past Calypso as she turned her face away.

“Hehe…” The demoness admired the hole. “That worked nicely.”

“Your leg, Cali,” Alexandra reminded her.

“Yes, yes. I’m coming, mommy. Please heal me.”

Kaiden took her place while she withdrew for healing. His shoulder throbbed every time he raised his arm, and there were enough soldiers left to make him work for every step toward their caster.

He was thoroughly enjoying himself.

Nyx gathered the fallen swords above the formation and sent them down through the gaps between shields. While the soldiers turned to defend against her barrage, Luna slipped through to their mage and cut off the hand holding its blue mask.

The blue plates vanished across the plaza. Before the mage could recover its mask, Luna split its robed body with her Stormblade.

“There!” Luna crowed. “GG!”

They still had to break the remaining soldiers. Kaiden finished the fight with a bruised forehead, another cut along his ribs, and Calypso laughing beside him as he wrenched the last shield aside for her axe.

When the last soldier fell, Kaiden collapsed the individual reward notices into a summary of the plaza fight.

[Enemies defeated: Porcelain Legionary ×34 | Mask Cantor ×2.]

[Your cumulative rewards: +5,700,000 XP | +1,168 DMP.]

He grinned at the figures. They had barely begun exploring the place, and already he wanted to see what waited deeper inside.

“Good selection, Yuno.”

Her fan rose to conceal a pleased smile.

“I hoped you would enjoy yourself.”

“They’re fun,” Luna agreed, flexing the fingers of her sword hand. “Annoying, but fun.”

“They wouldn’t give this much XP if they weren’t difficult to face,” Kaiden sighed.

“We have quite a few more waiting upstairs,” Nyx said. “Anyone want to raise the white flag yet?”

Above them, porcelain faces peered over the galleries’ railings.

Kaiden offered his injured arm to Alexandra, who was already approaching with restoration light gathering over her palms.

“Let’s keep pushing on.”

…

The upper galleries made them work even harder.

Soldiers with long, hooked spears could reach around the corners of their shields, and the narrow passages gave Kaiden very little room to avoid them. He learned to watch the gold rings at their elbows. Whenever one turned, a thrust was coming from a new angle.

Even knowing that, he caught a spear through the flesh above his knee before Calypso broke its shaft.

“They’re getting on my nerves,” she admitted, dragging him behind a pillar where Alexandra could reach his injured leg.

“The elbows,” he said. “Watch the rings.”

On the next crossing, they made the soldiers come to them. Alexandra wedged a barrier across the passage at shield height, forcing the creatures to raise their weapons over it. With their elbows exposed, Aria could shoot through the joints while Kaiden and Calypso kept the front rank occupied.

Luna found the arrangement deeply amusing.

“Come on, you ugly fucking dinner sets! Reach!”

One vaulted the barrier.

“Oh, you can jump.”

She dissolved into lightning before its spear hit her. Nyx caught a fallen shield and slammed it into the creature’s back, sending it stumbling into the place Luna had just left.

Bastet’s solar fire met it there. The soldier came out of the blaze with its white body blistering, still swinging until Luna ducked beneath the spear and cut through its damaged knee.

Once the broken knee brought it down, Bastet pierced its cracked chest with a narrow shaft of sunlight.
