Days as a Spiritual Mentor in American Comics Chapter 6056 - 72: Fighter’s Fate (18)
"Transfer the spider power to me?" Eddie pointed at himself in disbelief. "Did I hear that right? Are you sure you didn’t say it wrong?"
Carter rubbed her forehead and said, "Didn’t you just apply for a long-term stay permit yesterday? I saw the duration was written as five years..."
"Yes, but what does that have to do with the spider power?" Eddie looked confused. He woke up this morning, received a message from the Rebirth Alliance, telling him to pick up his long-term stay permit, and as soon as he arrived, a message hit him like a ton of bricks—Spider-Man wants to give him superpowers.
"You want to stay in this universe for a while to enhance your abilities, but you’ll eventually return to your own universe, right?" Carter confirmed again.
Eddie nodded, that was indeed his plan. Attending a wedding was just an excuse; the real reason was because the super invincible silver monster in his universe looked terrifyingly formidable. He didn’t think he and the symbiont inside him could defeat it, so he had to come over to develop first.
Fortunately, the time flow in different universes is somewhat different, and he has relatively ample time here. He plans to spend a few years on practical combat; even if he can’t cultivate Venom into a super symbiont, at the least he should learn a few tricks. Otherwise, how could he compete with those people?
"That’s right." Carter said, "Spider-Man doesn’t want to completely abandon his powers; he just wants to spend a few years enhancing himself, but he thinks the powers would be somewhat wasted on him during this period, so he wants to find someone to store them."
Eddie was stupefied by what he heard—this thing can be stored?
"It seems they have a way to control who possesses the spider power." Carter frowned and said, "Something related to a totem, I’m not sure exactly how, but it can certainly be done."
Carter continued, "Spider-Man knows you wrote the article on that girl; he understands that you did it to encourage him, and believes you are a trustworthy individual..."
Eddie scratched his head awkwardly. The article wasn’t actually his idea; it was another Bruce who asked him to write it. However, that welfare home and the little girl were indeed found by him. After all, he’s a professional journalist and knows the best angle to approach to have maximum impact.
But Bruce didn’t want Eddie to reveal his existence, so Eddie just said, "I’m doing what a journalist should do."
"So what do you think?" Carter asked, "Though you already have a symbiont, the spider power is still incredibly strong. It might even alter your symbiont, boosting its power."
Eddie mentally asked, "Is it possible, Venom?"
"How would I know?" Venom replied grumpily.
Eddie felt Venom was hiding something, but since this troublesome parasite didn’t have any objections, Eddie agreed. He said, "I’m happy to oblige; after all, if I don’t have some skills, I wouldn’t be able to stand strong in Forward York City."
"You need to understand, gaining the spider power means you have to shoulder Spider-Man’s responsibilities." Carter looked into his eyes and said, "At least for the next few years, you’ll need to complete the tasks assigned by the Rebirth Alliance. Of course, there is a salary and bonuses."
Eddie nodded: "Even without the salary, I’d want to join the Rebirth Alliance. I’m here to train my combat skills; it’s hard to improve without practical experience."
"Then it’s settled, let’s find time to meet this afternoon." Carter said, "I’m not sure how long the power transfer will take, but it’s best to start work as soon as possible; we’re really short-handed."
"I heard the church got wrecked?" Eddie asked, "Is the wedding going to be postponed?"
"The mutants are fixing it, probably not." Carter said, "As long as there are no more hiccups."
In the afternoon, several people gathered together. Besides Eddie and Spider-Man, Peter also came, along with a few members of the Rebirth Alliance. The discussion mainly revolved around Spider-Man’s work.
Spider-Man had a good impression of Eddie. The interview Eddie wrote didn’t deliberately flatter Spider-Man but was sincere and moving, and to a certain extent improved Spider-Man’s public opinion, giving many Spider-Man supporters a chance to voice their support. Eddie is a journalist, and there aren’t many good people in this industry. His ability to remain untainted despite working in such a muddy field already proves his character.
"So what should I do?" Eddie asked, "Get bitten by a spider? Can I choose a smaller one?"
"Being bitten by a spider is an unavoidable process," Peter explained, "It’s not some ritual; mainly, the spider totem’s power is transferred this way. As for the species of spider... I suggest you don’t look."
Eddie showed a puzzled expression. Peter continued, "Currently, the Multiverse Spiderman uses different spiders to communicate with the spider totem, but after some time, Spider-Men discovered that spiders too small are too easy to lose, so regardless of the species, the size all..."
He paused, and Eddie understood. He pursed his lips, clearly a bit scared. Peter reassured him, "Don’t worry, it’s just transferring power; it won’t hurt much."
Eddie could only grit his teeth, turn around, cover his face with one hand, and then stretched out the other hand. Meanwhile, Spider-Man took out the spider from behind.
It was unquestionably a Brazilian Blue Tarantula, a standard bird spider. Its whole body displayed a beautiful gemstone blue, with its leg span reaching about thirteen centimeters, slightly larger than a whole palm.
The moment the spider appeared, even Carter backed away a bit. This female agent had seen large scenes, but the human race’s fear of poisonous insects is encoded in their genes, especially when such a critter is so large and brightly colored. Anyone would be scared.
She couldn’t help but ask Peter softly, "Was this what bit you back then?"
"Oh no, the one that bit me was only about one centimeter." Peter whispered, "If it were this large, I wouldn’t have been bitten. It was too small, and I didn’t see it before being bitten."
Carter’s face showed a complex expression, hesitating for a long time before saying, "The First Spider-Man is still better; if later ones have to be bitten by such a spider, I’d rather not have superpowers."
"Don’t worry, it’s not a real bite," Peter said, "Spider power is actually a kind of magic ability, it’s equivalent to a magic conduction process, not so..."
"Owwwwwww!!!!!!!!!!"
Eddie’s scream almost tore the roof off. Carter instinctively covered his ears and gave Peter a look that said, "Are you sure it won’t?"
"Ah, sorry, I didn’t activate it!" Carter just finished speaking when Spider Man said, "Sorry, we have to do it again..."
Peter also widened his eyes, "Didn’t I tell you to activate the Totem Power first? Wait a minute, if you didn’t activate it, does that mean you really bit him?!"
"Sorry, sorry," Spider Man slapped his forehead hard, "I’ve been under a lot of stress lately, my mind’s not so sharp..."
Eddie hopped around clutching his hand, and after a while, he removed the other hand to see the bloody wound. It was the first time he realized that being bitten by a spider could bleed.
"Wait, is this a venomous spider?" Carter stood up and said, "Quick, quick, quick, call the doctor..."
Eddie’s face changed too, he grimaced and said, "Venomous? Won’t I be poisoned to death?!"
Just then, a maniacal laughter rang in his brain: "Hahahahahahahaha, you wimp!"
It was only then that Eddie realized he had a symbiont, which logically shouldn’t allow his skin to be pierced. This damn parasite just wanted to see him suffer.
"Instead of cursing me in your mind, I think you should take a look at that spider." Venom gloated, "If it were any bigger, it could be my snack."
Eddie instinctively looked at the thing in Spider Man’s hand, and when he saw the giant blue spider, he was completely stunned. He had just been bitten by this thing?!
"If I jump out the window, can you guarantee I won’t fall to my death?" Eddie asked in his mind.
"Jump out the window? This is the twenty-second floor," Venom said with some amazement, "you’re not afraid of heights anymore?"
Eddie stared intently at the spider in Peter’s hand and swallowed, "I think I might not be that afraid of heights."
The moment he dashed towards the window, Peter pulled him back with a magic chain.
"Oh, damn it!" Eddie let out a miserable cry.
But Spider Man didn’t give him time to react, releasing the spider, which clicked its fangs into his hand. This time Venom thought about defending, but the spider had already been activated, so it wasn’t a real bite, but rather transferring power via Spider Totem.
The next second, Eddie fell into an illusion. He felt many fragments flash before his eyes, memories of his own and others’, and the last scene paused on a spider emblem.
As soon as Eddie saw the spider emblem, Venom seemed to be stimulated, surging out from his body. It was originally pure black, but soon, certain symbionts were transformed into pure white, gradually coalescing into a spider pattern on his chest.
"Ugh...!!!!"
Eddie sat up abruptly, gasping heavily. His mind was stuffed with things not belonging to him, but he didn’t have the time to sort through them because he felt extremely hungry.
Fortunately, Peter was experienced, having already prepared a lot of food with Carter. But he forgot to consider that Eddie had Venom with him, and they didn’t eat like humans, chewing bit by bit. All the prepared food was devoured, and Venom was still hungry with red eyes.
Carter stepped back two paces, pointed in a direction, "The cafeteria is over there."
Venom directly jumped out the window and rushed out, Peter hurriedly followed, Carter took out his phone and said, "If you see a black monster charging into the cafeteria, don’t attack him, he’s just there to eat."
Just a few seconds after saying that, the other side said, "He already ate all the food stock too..."
"What?!!!"
Eddie and Venom gained spider power, and it’s not quite the same as Venom directly possessing Spider Man. This power seemed to permanently change Venom, granting him new strength. This change greatly consumed his energy, making him madly hungry, not yet eating people purely due to Eddie’s kind side exerting force.
"Eating just this won’t do!" Venom yelled at the arriving agents, "I need to replenish my factors, I need more energy!"
Carter also rushed in, just about to say something to calm Venom down when his phone rang. On the other end came Natasha’s serious voice, "Owl’s talons and Sentinel Robots are attacking Stark Building. Dispatch support immediately! Repeat..."
"Venom!" Carter shouted at Venom, "Stark Building! You can eat as much as you like, hurry up!"
