"Hurry up, hurry up! If Caidie's brother finds out you are back, he will be absolutely thrilled. You have no idea—ever since he ascended to the role of Sect Hierarch, he has been so somber and dejected. Seeing that troubled expression on his face truly breaks my heart..."
Upon seeing Liu Caidie, Han Ling’er could not cease her chatter, acting just like two dear friends reunited after a long separation.
She rambled on throughout the entire journey, recounting all the latest developments within the Zoroastrian Sect.
Chen Jie, maintaining the guise of an elderly servant, trailed silently behind, absorbing every detail regarding the current state of the Zoroastrian Sect.
The Zoroastrian Sect had fallen into a chaotic mess. Han Lin’er’s authority as Sect Hierarch had been effectively stripped away by Du Zundao and Mr. Guan, with every decree being bypassed as those two Dharma Kings made all the executive decisions.
This situation left Han Lin’er feeling utterly frustrated, as he had always harbored a dream of becoming a capable and respected monarch.
Ultimately, however, it was a dream he could not realize; nobody bothered to pay any mind to the young Sect Hierarch.
In the past, Liu Futong had been able to assist Han Lin’er in preserving some shred of dignity, allowing him to manage the routine administrative duties of the Sect.
However, Liu Futong had vanished quite suddenly not long ago, leaving Mr. Guan and Du Zundao to claim that he had entered seclusion.
Deeply suspicious, Han Lin’er had attempted to visit Liu Futong, only to find the entrance to the residence heavily guarded, preventing anyone from approaching.
The guards insisted that the Venerable was in deep seclusion, working on matters vital to the survival of the Zoroastrian Sect, and strictly forbade any interruptions.
Consequently, Han Lin’er was turned away, and he now spends his time lamenting his wretched fate.
Listening to Han Ling’er’s account, Chen Jie furrowed his brows. He was growing increasingly convinced that Liu Futong had met with some grave misfortune, which clearly defied the casual excuse of him undertaking crucial research in seclusion.
As he processed this, Chen Jie found himself contemplating the intricate and treacherous webs woven within the Zoroastrian Sect.
Hearing these details, Liu Caidie asked, "There are guards stationed at my grandfather's place, and even Brother Lin’er cannot gain entry?"
Han Ling’er nodded solemnly. Liu Caidie suggested, "Why don't we try to personally visit my grandfather's quarters?"
Han Ling’er replied, "It is pointless; we won't get through."
Liu Caidie countered, "Where there is a will, there is a way. Besides, if my grandfather is truly in some kind of danger, we are here to provide assistance, are we not?"
After a moment of hesitation following Liu Caidie’s impassioned words, Han Ling’er finally relented, "Very well, let us try."
They changed their course towards the new destination. Glancing back at the man trailing them, Han Ling’er asked, "That ugly, crippled old man—where on earth did you find him?"
Liu Caidie looked back at Chen Jiusi, who remained quiet while dragging his 'lame leg' behind them. She chuckled and said, "Hehe, his name is Zhao Fu; I just picked him up on the road. If he weren't so hideous and disabled, I certainly would not have taken him in!"
Han Ling’er looked surprised, remarking, "Ah, Caidie, you just picked him up? This is a sensitive period; the sect really should not be admitting unidentified strangers."
Liu Caidie waved it off, saying, "Do not worry! Just look at him—so grotesque and crippled, how could he possibly be a threat to the Holy Sect? You have nothing to fear."
Liu Caidie emphasized the words "ugly and crippled" repeatedly, as if she were venting some unexplained grievance. Chen Jie understood clearly that she was getting back at him for kidnapping her in Lantian County. This young lady had a childish streak but possessed a remarkably petty, vengeful side. Yet, he knew her taunts carried no true malice.
Chen Jie was well-prepared to tolerate it.
Han Ling’er considered these words for a beat and gave a nod of agreement. Indeed, how could such a pathetic, broken man ever threaten them? She was clearly allowing herself to overthink.
"That makes sense."
Being a straightforward soul, Han Ling’er immediately accepted Liu Caidie’s logic.
A short time later, the group arrived at a secluded and quiet courtyard—the home of the Yushan Monk, Liu Futong, one of the two great Venerables of the Zoroastrian Sect.
The building, constructed with fine green bricks and tiles, possessed the quiet charm of a modest scholar’s home.
However, the heavy presence of guards suggested otherwise. As they neared, the guards immediately stepped forward, greeting them with, "Saintess."
Han Ling’er gestured toward Liu Caidie and said, "This is Miss Liu Caidie. You all recognize her, don't you?"
One guard replied, "Are you indeed the granddaughter of Venerable Liu?"
Han Ling’er answered firmly, "Yes, she is his granddaughter. She wishes to speak with the Venerable, so please, unlock the courtyard gates."
The guard stood his ground, saying, "I am afraid that is impossible. Without a direct order from the Dharma Kings, no one is permitted to step inside this courtyard."
"How dare you! Does Caidie really need the consent of the Dharma Kings simply to see her own grandfather? Move aside and open these gates, or do not blame us for losing our temper."
"Saintess, this is beyond our control. We cannot disobey the specific orders given by the Dharma Kings. Please, Saintess and Miss Liu, you must leave."
The guard’s rigid refusal sent a surge of fury through Han Ling’er.
She shouted aggressively, "Will you open the gate or not? If you continue to refuse, I shall be forced to break in!"
The guard immediately countered, "Saintess, you occupy a high position in the sect; you must not act so recklessly. To do so would only bring grief to your allies and satisfaction to your enemies, which would be truly disastrous."
"Are you threatening me?"
Han Ling’er’s eyes grew cold and sharp. She barked, "Are you hiding some secret? If there is nothing to hide, why are you so terrified of us entering to investigate? Open those gates right now, or you will certainly pay the price for this defiance."
At her command, the guards raised their weapons, with their leader shouting, "Form ranks!"
"Oh? So you actually intend to fight me, do you?"
