Clumsy Beast, Keep Your Paws Off Chapter 846: The Vision for the Farm
Previously on Clumsy Beast, Keep Your Paws Off...
Su Qinglan was busy at home when a beastman suddenly came looking for her.
"Sister Su Qinglan, someone is looking for you."
Su Qinglan looked up in surprise. "Looking for me?"
"Yes. He is waiting outside."
Su Qinglan got up and walked out into the courtyard. A beastman guard stood by the entrance, and beside him was a familiar figure.
Rao.
The moment Rao saw her, he scratched his head awkwardly, shifting his weight from foot to foot. The guard who brought him over turned around and departed, leaving Rao alone with Su Qinglan.
Looking slightly nervous, Rao cleared his throat. "Is... the offer from yesterday still valid?"
Su Qinglan raised an eyebrow. "You want to work?"
Rao immediately nodded. "Yes. I want to work if you’ll have me."
Su Qinglan smiled gently. "Of course. But you have to behave yourself. If you dare to steal anything from the farm again, I’ll be the first one to kick you out."
Rao immediately stood straight as a board. "I would never dare to steal again!" He hesitated for a second before adding with earnest seriousness, "But... you have to give me good food."
Su Qinglan almost laughed. "Good food?"
"My three females can’t starve." His expression grew solemn. "They’re pregnant. They need to eat well."
Su Qinglan nodded warmly. "I understand." She then outlined the compensation terms. "I’ll give you ten jins of vegetables every month, along with ten jins of wheat and ten jins of rice."
Rao’s eyes slowly widened.
"And you’ll receive five jin of meat every week."
His eyes grew even wider. "Five... what?"
Su Qinglan froze. "Five jins."
Rao stared blankly at her. "What is a jin?"
Su Qinglan was stunned. Everyone in Dragon Beast City understood numbers and basic standard measurements...jins were commonly used when distributing food. This was her first time encountering someone completely unfamiliar with the term.
Before she could figure out how to explain it, Shi Feng stepped forward smoothly.
"He probably hasn’t had much contact with other beastmen or larger settlements," Shi Feng observed thoughtfully.
"Literacy and standardized knowledge are lower among weaker, isolated beastman groups. They don’t have the same educational or trading systems that we do."
Rao scratched his head in embarrassment. "I really don’t understand."
Su Qinglan rubbed her forehead, searching for a clear visual. Her eyes landed on a large woven basket nearby, and she pointed at it directly.
"Forget the numbers. I’ll give you this much, five times."
Rao stared at the basket, then at Su Qinglan. "Five baskets?"
"Yes."
His eyes lit up instantly. "Then I understand!"
Su Qinglan finally relaxed. "Good."
Rao nodded happily, overwhelmed by the prospect. To him, that amount of food sounded like enough to survive on for an entire year. But after bouncing excitedly on his heels for a moment, he suddenly froze.
His expression turned deeply suspicious. "Wait."
Su Qinglan looked at him. "What?"
"What exactly do you want me to do?" He looked at her nervously. "You aren’t planning to sell me into slavery, are you?"
Su Qinglan’s mouth twitched. "What?"
"I am not a slave!" Rao puffed out his tiny chest defensively. "I am a full beastman!"
Su Qinglan rolled her eyes playfully. "I’m not going to sell you. Follow me."
Rao hurried after her as she led the way toward the farming area, with Shi Feng keeping pace alongside them.
As they walked, Shi Feng asked softly, "Lanlan, what are you planning to do with him? There are plenty of strong beastmen in Dragon Beast City who can handle farm work."
"Wait and see," Su Qinglan murmured with a knowing look. "I need to see what he can do first."
When they arrived at the vast fields, Su Qinglan pointed toward the nearby river. "See that river? You’ll be responsible for watering the plants in this section. Every morning, you will water them. After that, you’ll help check the crops, remove weeds, and clear any damaged plants."
She continued outlining his duties...helping maintain the timber fences, reporting anything unusual, and keeping unauthorized visitors away.
Rao blinked, looking over the fields. "That’s it?"
"That’s it."
"This is my work?"
"Yes."
Rao’s face brightened instantly. "Then I’ll do it!"
He looked as if he had just been handed a grand treasure. Su Qinglan smiled quietly. She knew he lacked the sheer physical strength for heavy labor like logs or stone, but watering plants, watching the fields, and managing light maintenance were tasks he could handle with ease.
Rao happily sprinted toward the river to inspect his new workplace.
Su Qinglan watched him for a moment before turning back with Shi Feng.
As they walked, Shi Feng asked, "Lanlan, why are you giving him so much food for such simple work?"
"You think I’m giving it to him for free?" Su Qinglan countered softly.
Shi Feng paused. "Isn’t that what it looks like?"
"No," Su Qinglan shook her head, looking out over the sprawling green farmland.
"Think about it. Our male beastmen spend hours every morning farming before heading out to hunt. They are built for hunting and defense. If they spend half their energy on field work before tracking the game, when do they rest?"
Shi Feng fell silent as her words hit home.
"Right now, everyone wakes at dawn to tend crops, hunts all day, and returns exhausted," Su Qinglan sighed. "It’s an inefficient use of their strength."
Shi Feng slowly nodded in agreement.
Su Qinglan’s golden eyes sparkled with vision. "That’s why I want to hire people like Rao...the sub-beastmen and weaker beastmen. They may not have the massive bodies of top predators, but they can farm, water, weed, guard, and maintain the land exceptionally well. They get stability, food, and safety, while our strongest hunters gain more time to hunt and rest."
Shi Feng’s eyes lit up as the genius of her structure unfolded.
"And this farm won’t stop here," Su Qinglan added, pointing toward the open plains beyond the perimeter.
"As Dragon Beast City grows, we’ll need far more food. Once we expand the fields, we can produce a surplus to trade with other beast cities."
"Trade?" Shi Feng echoed, thoroughly amazed.
"Of course!" Su Qinglan smiled proudly. "Vegetables, grains, preserved fruits... other settlements desperately need diverse food. We’ll generate wealth, Dragon Beast City will grow richer, and everyone’s quality of life will improve."
Shi Feng stood speechless for a moment, looking at her with deep admiration. She was trying to build an entire economic ecosystem...employment, labor division, trade, and food security all tied together seamlessly.
"Lanlan, you’re incredible," Shi Feng sighed happily, a warm smile gracing his features. "My female really does have a unique talent for creating prosperity."
Su Qinglan laughed softly. "Of course I do!"
