Clumsy Beast, Keep Your Paws Off Chapter 720: The Beast World’s Giant Wild Yams
Previously on Clumsy Beast, Keep Your Paws Off...
The following afternoon, the winter sun cast a pale, gentle light over the Dragon Beast City.
Su Qinglan was back in her vibrant backyard garden, crouching down to dig up some fresh winter vegetables. Her face was flushed a pretty rosy red from the cool breeze, but she did not mind the cold at all.
Even though the winter air was freezing, she found the crisp breeze incredibly refreshing after spending so many days trapped inside the house.
Right besides her, the three little cubs... Xiao Yi, Xiao Er, and Xiao San were trotting around happily in their beast forms. Each of them was holding a tiny woven basket in their mouths.
Every time Su Qinglan dug up a fresh, green bunch of winter spinach, she would shake off the excess dirt and place a few leaves into their small baskets.
The three little cubs puffed out their chests proudly, holding their heads high as they carried their small loads. They trotted around their mother like little soldiers on a very important mission.
Behind them, Xuan Long walked with slow, steady steps. His towering frame easily blocked the cold wind for Su Qinglan.
In his strong arms, he carried a massive bamboo basket that was already half-filled with fresh vegetables. His emerald eyes were fixed entirely on Su Qinglan’s moving figure, filled with deep warmth and absolute devotion.
After clearing their own garden patch, Su Qinglan stood up and wiped her brow. She looked towards the outer fence.
"Xuan Long, let’s go outside and check on the other people’s gardens," she suggested, her voice cheerful. "I want to see how the winter crops are doing."
Even though she had entrusted the overall maintenance of the other people’s gardens to Stove, and the little plant had been working diligently to ensure the crops did not freeze to death...she still wanted to inspect them with her own eyes.
Besides, she was secretly itching to go outside. It had been months since she had stepped outside the inner walls of the Dragon Beast City, and with Xuan Long by her side, she felt completely safe.
There was absolutely nothing to worry about.
"Alright," Xuan Long replied smoothly, nodding his head.
The five of them immediately walked out of the courtyard and strolled through the quiet paths of the city.
As they inspected the various garden plots, Su Qinglan was highly pleased.
Every single garden was thriving, the soil still rich and moist despite the frost. She made a mental note to praise Stove and give him some extra spirit-energy treats later. He really was a diligent worker when he wasn’t running his mouth.
They soon reached the edge of the city, near the shallow forest line just past the southern gate. The snow here was thicker, covering the ground like a heavy white blanket.
As Su Qinglan walked along the edge of the woods, her eyes suddenly caught a glimpse of a withered, dried vine poking out from beneath the deep snow.
She paused, her curiosity piqued. She walked over, knelt down in the snow, and began brushing the white powder away with her bare hands.
To her absolute astonishment, buried deep within the dark, frozen earth, she saw the thick, brown crown of a wild yam.
"Oh! It’s a wild yam!" she exclaimed, her eyes widening with delight.
In the modern world, yams did not easily survive the harsh freezing winters. To protect themselves, they would usually go dormant deep underground and would not sprout until the spring.
But in this vast beast world, where the soil was incredibly rich in spiritual energy, these wild yams had grown massive and remained perfectly preserved under the frozen crust.
Since the local beastmen only focused on hunting meat and did not know how to eat or harvest these root vegetables, the ground was literally packed with them.
Thrilled by her discovery, Su Qinglan immediately began clawing at the cold dirt with her fingers to unearth it.
"Lanlan, stop," Xuan Long spoke up instantly, his brow furrowing with worry.
Seeing her delicate, soft fingers scraping against the rough, freezing soil made his heart ache. He immediately stepped forward, knelt besides her, and gently pulled her hands away from the dirt.
"Your hands will freeze. Let me do it."
Su Qinglan looked at Xuan Long’s hands. His fingers were long, bony, and highly defined...the hands of a powerful young master. Her heart warmed at his protective gesture. She smiled softly and reached into the basket, pulling out a small iron hand shovel she had brought along.
"Don’t use your bare hands either. Use this shovel; it will be much faster," she said, placing the wooden handle into his palm.
Xuan Long nodded, accepting the tool. With his immense strength, digging up the frozen ground was as easy as slicing through butter.
Within a few minutes, he had successfully dug out a large pile of thick, heavy wild yams.
Su Qinglan was truly stunned as she picked one up.
The yams in the Beast World were easily three times larger than the ones she remembered from her past life. They were plump, heavy, and full of nutritious starch.
"This is wonderful!" she laughed happily, placing the heavy yams into Xuan Long’s basket. "We can make sweet yam porridge and roast it over the fire tonight."
Xuan Long watched her excited face, a soft, doting smile appearing on his lips. To him, her happiness was the most important thing in the world.
As they walked back towards the city limits, they passed by the wide, frozen river that ran near the eastern wall. The thick sheet of ice over the water glistened under the afternoon sun.
Su Qinglan stopped at the bank, her eyes shining as she looked at the frozen river.
"Xuan Long! Look at the river. Let’s do some winter fishing!"
Hearing the word "fishing", the three little cubs immediately dropped their baskets and began bouncing around her legs, letting out excited, high-pitched chirps.
"Fish! Fish!" "We are going to eat delicious fish!"
They had not eaten fresh river fish for so many days, and their little mouths were already watering at the thought.
Xuan Long nodded and immediately walked onto the thick ice. His powerful fist clenched, and he prepared to smash a massive hole through the ice and dive straight into the freezing, rapid waters to catch the fish with his bare hands.
"Wait! Stop, Xuan Long!" Su Qinglan cried out, hurriedly rushing onto the ice to grab his arm.
"Don’t dive in there. The water is freezing. We don’t need to do it that way."
Xuan Long paused, looking at her in confusion. If they didn’t dive into the water, how were they supposed to catch the fish?
Su Qinglan smiled mysteriously. She walked to the riverbank and found a long, sturdy fallen branch.
Using her small knife, she quickly trimmed the leaves and tied a strong piece of vine to the tip; the vine was created by her plant-type energy. She attached a small wooden float. Within minutes, she had constructed a fully functional, handmade fishing rod.
She then turned to the three waiting cubs. "Xiao Yi, Xiao Er, Xiao San, go to the wet soil near the tree roots and dig up some earthworms for bait."
