Su Qinglan bit her trembling lower lip, staring straight into his panicked golden eyes. Her voice was sharp, but her eyes were filled with stubbornness and deep pain.
"Hu Yan, you are absolutely right," she said, her voice shaking slightly from the cold.
"It is entirely your fault that you were not able to see the cubs. You failed to watch them."
Hu Yan’s face fell, his shoulders tensing as he prepared for the harsh truth. He nodded dumbly. "Yes, I..."
"But," Su Qinglan interrupted him loudly, her eyes flashing with anger, "if it is your fault, then it is also equally my fault! I am their mother. I was inside the house, yet I also failed to look after them! If you are a bad father, then I am an equally bad mother!"
"No! That’s not true!" Hu Yan immediately protested, his voice rising in panic.
"Lanlan, it is not your fault! It is entirely my responsibility!"
"No! We are partners, and we are both their parents!" Su Qinglan argued back fiercely, grabbing his shoulder.
"If you are as much at fault as you claim, then I was also. So, let me kneel right here beside you. If you want to pay for your sins in the freezing cold, then I will pay for mine right alongside you!"
Hearing her words, Hu Yan felt like he was going to go crazy.
Having his precious female kneel on the freezing snow with him? He would rather die a thousand times over!
"No! Absolutely not!" Hu Yan growled. He immediately tried to push her off his lap, intending to carry her back into the warm house by force.
But Su Qinglan was incredibly stubborn. She wrapped her arms around his neck, digging her heels in and trying to push him back down, refusing to let him move her.
They began to struggle against each other right there on the wooden floorboards, a wild, chaotic tangle of limbs in the middle of the freezing wind.
"Let me go, Hu Yan! If you don’t get up, I’m not going in either!" she yelled.
"Lanlan, stop being so stubborn!" Hu Yan pleaded, his massive arms wrapping around her like steel bands to keep her from slipping to the floor.
"It is the duty of the beast husbands to protect and raise the cubs. You have already done so much. You worked so hard and went through so much pain to give birth to them! Raising them and keeping them safe is my duty. You did nothing wrong!"
Su Qinglan looked at his desperate, honest face.
A soft smile tugged at the corners of her lips, though her eyes were still flashing with angry fire.
Without warning, she lunged forward and fiercely kissed his lips.
Hu Yan instantly went completely rigid. His golden eyes widened to the size of saucers. His brain short-circuited entirely.
He had been in the middle of a serious, high-stakes argument about his failures as a father, and he never could have imagined in a million years that she would suddenly kiss him in the middle of it.
But Su Qinglan wasn’t done.
Before Hu Yan could even lean into the kiss, she clamped her teeth down and bit his bottom lip hard.
"Ah!" Hu Yan gasped, his eyes widening even further as he felt the sharp sting.
Su Qinglan immediately pulled back, wiping her mouth with the back of her hand. She sat on his lap and glared down at him like a fierce little tigress.
"If you ever dare to say anything like that again, I will really beat you!" she threatened, puffing out her chest.
She immediately slid off his lap, stood up on her cold feet, and pointed a sharp finger toward the warm hallway inside.
"Now, get your big, stubborn body inside the house right this instant! Or forget about ever entering this house or sleeping in my bed again!"
She turned around and began to march inside, her bare feet making soft, angry slapping sounds against the floorboards.
Hearing the words "forget about ever entering this house", Hu Yan felt his stomach drop straight to his toes.
His stubborn pride, his desire to atone, and his guilt instantly vanished into thin air, completely replaced by pure panic.
He didn’t care about kneeling anymore. He didn’t care about his pride.
"Lanlan! Wait! I’m coming!" Hu Yan scrambled up from the floor so fast he almost tripped over his own massive feet.
He abandoned the wooden plank and rushed inside the house after her like a large, obedient puppy.
On the other side of the room, near the small crack of the inner door, two pairs of round, furry ears were twitching anxiously.
Xiao Yi and Xiao Er had been peeking through the crack the entire time.
The two little tiger cubs had woken up from their short nap, still feeling a bit weak, but their hearts had been incredibly heavy.
When they looked out and saw their father kneeling in the freezing snow with a layer of white ice on his hair, their tiny hearts had practically shattered.
To their young minds, their father was an invincible, towering mountain.
Seeing him look so dejected and punished made their eyes immediately well up with hot, fat tears. It seemed they had really done something terrible today.
Their father was being punished because of them!
And then, they saw their mother arrive.
When they saw Su Qinglan yelling and pushing Hu Yan, and then suddenly biting his lip until he gasped, the two cubs completely misunderstood the situation.
In their innocent, childish minds, they thought their mother was violently punishing and beating their father because of their mistake.
"Uwah..." Xiao Yi sniffed, his tiny nose turning bright red.
"Mama... Mama is going to beat Father to death! It’s not Father’s fault! We were the ones who ran away!"
Xiao Er whimpered, his small body shaking. "She bit him! She bit Father! Mother is going to beat him just like Aunt San beat Uncle You last week!"
Standing right behind them, Rong Ye was trying to keep the cubs from rushing out and ruining the couple’s moment.
Hearing their dramatic wailing, he was instantly stunned.
"Wait... Aunt San? Uncle You?" Rong Ye muttered, his fox ears twitching as he racked his brain.
Then, it clicked. He realized they were talking about the leopard neighbours who lived two houses down, where the fierce female often chased her husband out of the house with a wooden broom when he got lazy.
Rong Ye coughed into his hand, trying to keep a straight face.
"No, no, little ones. Why on earth would your mother beat your father? She doesn’t even have a broom."
"But she did!" Xiao Yi cried, pointing a trembling paw through the door.
"Look! Father’s lip is bleeding! And Mama is slapping his chest! She’s driving him out! Father is going to be homeless!"
Indeed, outside, Su Qinglan was angrily pushing Hu Yan’s chest as he tried to wrap his arms around her to apologize, and the tiny droplet of blood from where she had bitten him was clearly visible on his bottom lip.
To the little cubs, this was a scene of absolute domestic violence.
The two tiger cubs burst into a loud, unified wail, their high-pitched cries echoing through the hallway.
"Uwahhhh! Father! Don’t beat Father!"
