Qi Fenglian and Cheng Su attend a funeral. Cheng Su observes the mourning rituals, including the wearing of white head towels and the offering of foil money. Mother Qi arrives, deeply grieving her sister, and briefly scolds Deng Weixia. Father Qi asks Qi Fenglian to comfort her mother. Cheng Su, feeling stifled by the atmosphere, steps outside for fresh air and is joined by Deng Weixia, who expresses his grief and mentions his mother passed peacefully in her sleep.

After staying at Deng Family Village for a day, the next day Cheng Su left without waiting for the funeral. When she returned home, her face was full of exhaustion, and she didn’t say much to her parents before going to her room to catch up on sleep. When she woke up, Xiao Qi was sitting by her bed, flipping through a book.

"Awake?" Upon hearing her stir, Qi Xiaoqi turned his head to glance at her.

Cheng Su reached out to touch his head and asked, "Why are you sitting here?"

"I said I’d take a nap." Qi Xiaoqi looked at her and asked, "How was the mourning? Everything went okay?"

"It’s just a funeral, what could happen? You’re worried for nothing." Cheng Su laughed while wrapping herself in the quilt as she sat up.

"That’s good." Qi Xiaoqi sat cross-legged, rolled his eyes at her, and said, "Sometimes you’re just brainless. With my dad not here, I was told to keep an eye on you, so of course, I’d worry."

"Oh, look who’s feeling important!" Cheng Su poked his forehead and teased him.

Qi Xiaoqi let out a light snicker.

Cheng Su smiled again, adjusted his position, and said, "Funerals in the countryside can be quite troublesome; the process is really complex. You wouldn’t know, your Aunt Fenglian had to lift the cloth covering the face to take one last look at the deceased, which was pretty creepy. I felt a bit scared then."

Qi Xiaoqi glanced at her, "I knew you’d be that timid."

"Actually, people are quite strange. You wouldn’t know that this aunt—oh, your great-aunt, your dad’s biological aunt—she was so dignified and full of moral authority in her day..." Cheng Su recalled those past years of Aunt Fenglian—an advocate for women not being allowed at the table—and sighed softly. Even the most influential person cannot fight against the inevitability of life and death.

"What’s there to sigh about? Life and death are all normal, aren’t they? When someone dies, ordinary people wouldn’t know about it, only Lord Yama would!" Qi Xiaoqi’s gaze wandered into the void, "If someone really knew, would they actually be willing to die?"

Seeing his serious expression, Cheng Su pulled his neck closer and asked, "What happened? Why this sudden bout of sentimentality?" Then she asked carefully, "When you died in your past life, how old were you?"

Qi Xiaoqi’s little face tensed as his bright red lips pressed together tightly, staying silent for quite a while.

Seeing him not respond, Cheng Su hurriedly said, "If you don’t want to talk about it, don’t answer, I..."

"Twenty-seven." Qi Xiaoqi lowered his eyelids; it wasn’t something that couldn’t be said, just that memories, after all, are painful.

Cheng Su’s heart trembled; so young. She looked at him, hesitated for a moment, and asked, "Were you... sick?"

Qi Xiaoqi pursed his lips and shook his head. If it was an illness, that would be understandable—life and death, everyone must face it. But ironically, it wasn’t the case.

"Then it was..." Cheng Su saw his distressed expression and suddenly couldn’t continue. Why ask? Asking would only reopen an old wound, and she loved him too much to sprinkle salt on it.

Yet she was truly curious about how the child had died and how he arrived here.

To be reincarnated with memories—if they were painful memories, it must be really hard.

With this thought, Cheng Su hugged him and said, "Don’t dwell on it too much. Getting another chance at life is a blessing. As for your memories, maybe they’re a gift from heaven, just bravely accept them."

"Okay." Qi Xiaoqi jumped off the bed and said, "Grandma and them should be back with the groceries soon. Get up now."

After saying that, he turned and waddled out of the room.

"Hey you..." Cheng Su raised her hand, but all she got in return was the sound of the door closing. She couldn’t help clicking her tongue; this kid surely knew how to play it cool.
