Deng Weixia's aunt has passed away. Cheng Su and Qi Fenglian travel to the village for the funeral rites. Upon arriving, they witness the somber atmosphere and the traditional mourning rituals.

As soon as Qi Fenglian entered, she started wailing, and Cheng Su followed her, feeling a bit at a loss with her hands and feet, stealing a hurried glance inside the main room.

The house was square, with straw and mats laid on the ground. Some sat upon them, while on the other side, the body was placed on a cloud board, covered with a white cloth, with a square towel over the face.

Seeing Qi Fenglian crying and kneeling, lighting incense, Cheng Su followed suit, kneeling and lighting three sticks of incense, inserting them into the incense holder.

But afterward, she dared not move, because Qi Fenglian, while crying, crawled on her knees to the body, lifted the white towel covering the face for a glance, it was considered viewing the deceased.

Cheng Su also stole a glance then lowered her head, not lifting the covering like her, just bowed her head, then followed her to Deng Weixia and Liu Wenjing, who were dressed in mourning clothes, and handed over her prepared foil money.

Deng Weixia accepted it, and someone took two white towels and handed them to them. Qi Fenglian immediately unfolded and wore it on her head, just like the white head towel worn by Liu Wenjing.

Cheng Su held the towel, glanced at the women in the room, noticing quite a number wearing them, likely due to closer relations, then looked at the one in her hand with a bit of distaste.

"Do I really have to wear it?" Cheng Su asked Qi Fenglian quietly.

"As a close niece-in-law, just a token gesture in this room!" Qi Fenglian whispered back.

Cheng Su uttered an oh, just as she was about to put it on, a sharp cry came from outside, the voice sounded familiar.

Her mother-in-law was helped inside by Father Qi, who immediately knelt down and cried, like Qi Fenglian, to view the deceased.

But compared to them, Mother Qi seemed much more sorrowful, likely genuinely grieving from her heart, after all, it’s her dear elder sister.

"Mom and Dad are here!" Qi Fenglian said with red eyes.

Father Qi lit incense, saw them, and nodded slightly.

"When did you arrive?" Father Qi asked.

"Just a little while ago."

Mother Qi cried for a while, was coaxed by Deng Weixia with a few words, took the white head towel and wore it, then began to reproach him: "You wronged your mother!"

Cheng Su’s eyebrows furrowed.

Deng Weixia knelt down, his head lowered.

"Your mom is losing her temper again!" Father Qi said with a serious face: "Fenglian, go and persuade her."

Qi Fenglian hurried over, whispered a few words in Mother Qi’s ear, she stopped talking, and sat on the mat, crying again.

Cheng Su felt suffocated, and said to Father Qi: "Dad, I’m going for a walk!"

"Go on, go on!"

Deng Weixia’s house, once out the door, facing the mountains, fresh air came, allowing her to take a deep breath.

Behind, there were cries, along with the chanting of the Daoist priest, making her feel stifled inside.

No matter how one feels, the person has passed away, they are gone, and this atmosphere indeed makes one feel sad.

"Cousin-in-law." At some point, Deng Weixia stood beside her.

"Mm, why did you come out?" Cheng Su asked: "Is everything okay? If the money isn’t enough, feel free to ask."

Organizing a funeral is both costly and labor-intensive.

"Should be enough." Deng Weixia said: "After mom’s first seven days, I’ll go back to work."

"Alright, I’ll inform Old Song." Cheng Su nodded and said: "Deepest condolences."

Deng Weixia barely managed a smile and said: "My mom, she passed peacefully enough, went in the middle of the night. It’s just that I dozed off a bit at the time, woke up to find..."

His throat choked up, Cheng Su patted his shoulder: "She’s also relieved now, keep moving forward!"

Relieved she may be, but when she passed, she was likely lonely, wondering what thoughts and feelings she had in her final moments?

Perhaps, there was regret, or perhaps, there was sadness?

No matter what, heaven holds no suffering, hoping for better days to come!
