The family gathers for a hot pot meal, discussing Qi Fenglian's potential new partner, Chu Changxing. Qi Taiguo's stern demeanor is softened by Mother Qi, ensuring Chu Changxing feels somewhat at ease. After Chu Changxing and Qi Fenglian leave, Qi Taiguo and Cheng Su discuss Chu Changxing, deeming him a stable, if unremarkable, match for their daughter. They agree that a peaceful life running a hardware store together is a good prospect for Qi Fenglian.

Because the in-laws unexpectedly proposed a trip to Guangcheng, two additional train tickets were procured. A contingent of several individuals embarked on a journey via train towards Guangcheng.

Mother Qi's leg remained problematic, causing her to walk with a noticeable limp and at a reduced pace. To avoid drawing curious glances, she generally opted to sit. To facilitate the entire family remaining in one shared space, Cheng Su generously opted for a more expensive private compartment ticket, which led to a lively atmosphere during the journey.

"This is the longest journey I’ve ever taken. Goodness, Su, do you reckon the Cheng family extended an invitation to your Third Uncle?" Father Cheng inquired with palpable excitement.

Even before Cheng Su could offer a reply, Mother Cheng interjected, "Lao San actually called earlier and mentioned he received an invitation. It’s wonderful; he can join Cheng Zhi for a drink."

Mother Qi expressed surprise, "They even extended an invitation to your family’s Lao San?"

A sense of unease settled in her heart. While it was understandable for the Cheng family to invite Susu’s biological parents, considering her status as their goddaughter, inviting the Third Uncle, who was a more distant relation, seemed peculiar.

Noticing Mother Qi’s evident envy, Mother Cheng couldn’t resist a touch of boasting, "Naturally, he was invited. The Cheng family is quite substantial and affluent; hosting a multi-day banquet presents no challenge for them. Our Lao San is also Susu’s biological third uncle; we are all interconnected by kinship."

Mother Qi’s face flushed slightly with embarrassment.

Cheng Su elaborated, "After Third Uncle relocated to Guangcheng, my Fourth Brother provided him with considerable assistance. In return, Third Uncle sends gifts during the holidays, and their acquaintance grew over time. It’s hardly surprising they’d invite him for the wedding now. Furthermore, Third Uncle might engage in future business ventures with the Cheng family!"

The Cheng family was pursuing real estate development, and the astute Third Uncle Cheng had already managed to secure some renovation contracts from them.

This revelation made Mother Qi feel even more uncomfortable. She remarked, "Your family’s Lao San is exceptionally fortunate." Her gaze shifted to Cheng Su, her mind racing. This daughter-in-law’s generosity extended to her natal family; surely, she was the architect behind Cheng Lao San's ascent, paving the way for his association with prominent figures like the Cheng family. How else could he establish such connections?

She recollected the previous year when Cheng Su was in the process of securing a bank loan. At that time, Mother Qi had directly confronted the Cheng family to hold them accountable. The young men of the Cheng family, much like spirited young bulls, had vehemently defended their sister, demonstrating remarkable solidarity.

Mother Qi was compelled to concede that the Cheng family exhibited genuine unity and a strong protective instinct towards their daughter.

However, it was undeniable that their protection likely stemmed from the advantages Cheng Su offered them. Could they possibly refrain from protecting her?

As the conversation continued, it became apparent that the Cheng family’s influence was on the rise, and Cheng Su’s own standing was becoming increasingly secure. Not only did her biological brothers offer their unwavering support, but her god-kin, reputedly all sons—including brothers and now their sons—provided her with a formidable network of backing.

Mother Qi reflected on these developments, growing increasingly aware that Cheng Su was not an individual to be trifled with. She had, without realizing it, ascended to an almost unassailable position, rendering her beyond Mother Qi’s influence.

Possessing both wealth and connections, these constituted Cheng Su’s formidable strengths. Mother Qi, on the other hand, aside from the title of mother-in-law, found herself lacking any comparable assets. Even her own son appeared to be under Cheng Su’s sway. If her son favored her, Mother Qi would undoubtedly feel displeased, potentially leading to her involving a cohort of brothers to intervene. Would Qi Taiguo remain unaffected?

With this thought, Mother Qi pressed her lips together, her eyes reflecting a complex mixture of emotions.

Some individuals are simply blessed with extraordinary luck, and isn't Cheng Su a prime example of such fortune?

Her gaze then settled upon Qi Xiaoqi, cradled in her arms. Her expression instantly softened. This cherished grandchild was a part of the Qi family. His mother’s good fortune was intrinsically linked to his own; in the future, would not all of Cheng Su’s assets ultimately belong to her grandson?

Nevertheless, considering her grandson's future, she resolved to persevere and endure.
