The arrival of Cheng Su’s in-laws and his biological father had occurred. Given that the matter of Qi Fenglian was initiated by Cheng Su, it was only natural for the in-laws to wish for a meeting, as the discussion pertained to the future well-being of Qi Fenglian.
While Zhang Jisheng was an honest man in the end, he had not always been so in his past, and the extent of the troubles he caused later on was considerable.
Cheng Su contacted Qi Fenglian, conveyed the proposal, and Qi Fenglian, after a period of contemplation, stated her intention to respond after deliberating with Chu Changxing.
A mere phone call, and yet it was an invitation to meet Qi Fenglian’s family. How could Chu Changxing possibly refuse? This essentially signaled Qi Fenglian’s acceptance of him. Successfully navigating the family’s scrutiny might mean he wouldn’t face the holidays alone this year.
Consequently, Chu Changxing readily agreed, setting aside the shop’s affairs. He pulled down the shutters, returned home to freshen up, and purchased a selection of gifts, which both amused and touched Qi Fenglian.
Wasn’t his profound attention towards her also a reflection of his focus on himself?
As Qi Fenglian planned to bring the children along, Cheng Su contacted Qi Taiguo, discussed the situation, and suggested he return early, take time off work, and provide company and supervision.
With an increased number of people present, it was impractical for only Mother Cheng to handle all the cooking. Therefore, Cheng Su personally ventured to the farmers’ market to procure ingredients. Observing the cold weather, he decided a lamb hotpot would be ideal, allowing everyone to gather around the table for a comforting meal and perhaps some drinks for the men.
"You two go on ahead; we will remain here and look after Xiao Qi," Mother Qi signaled to Cheng Su and Mother Cheng.
As the mother and daughter departed, Mother Cheng could not refrain from voicing her feelings.
"Take a look at your mother-in-law’s air…" Mother Cheng mimicked her tone, "You go on ahead, we are watching over Xiao Qi, oh my! Examine that posture, tsk tsk, like a dowager empress, and we have been reduced to palace maids."
"Mom, she yearned for a grandchild for such a long time before I gave birth. Now that she has one, it’s only natural she would dote on him," Cheng Su responded with a laugh.
"This kind of attitude, when she is well enough to assist you with the child later, ensure she does not excessively spoil him. A multitude of dissolute heirs and unruly youths are raised by indulgent matriarchs!" Mother Cheng stated with sincerity.
Cheng Su chuckled with understanding, "Mom, you are humorously referring to yourself. You also indulge him significantly, do you not? When I raise my voice at Qi Xiaoqi, you would reprimand me, fearing I might startle him. Yet, when it concerns my mother-in-law, you caution her against spoiling the child?"
Mother Cheng felt a warmth spread across her face and gently patted Cheng Su’s shoulder, "You little scamp! I am doing this for the child’s well-being, while you try to undermine your own mother, hmm! Am I not considering that he is still young?"
Cheng Su giggled, "I would never dare to undermine you; I am merely making an observation. Rest assured, with Qi Taiguo and myself present, Xiao Qi will not tread the path of a wayward heir. It would be a loss of face if such a situation arose."
Mother Cheng considered this, and it seemed logical. She couldn't fully depend on her daughter, but her son-in-law, a soldier, had always expressed a desire for Xiao Qi to inherit his legacy, indicating he would likely be a strict father.
However, she could not help but add, "Just make certain you can manage it appropriately. Boys truly require a proper upbringing, as numerous affluent families have been undone by unfilial offspring. Now, you can only have one child, and this singular descendant must be raised commendably!"
Cheng Su felt a surge of gratitude towards his mother, who grasped the situation with clarity. He affectionately embraced Mother Cheng’s shoulder, "Mom, there is no more perceptive grandmother than you. Worry not, we have the situation well in hand. I shall purchase some fine attire for you in Guangcheng as compensation for your diligent efforts during these recent days, esteemed Grandma!"
Mother Cheng’s heart was filled with warmth, and she playfully nudged Cheng Su, "You mischievous child, always quick with your honeyed words."
The mother and daughter exchanged laughter and banter, proceeding to the market with cheerful spirits.
